Hackett Effect Creates "Buzz" in CA-50

Two weeks ago, you couldn't get a newspaper reporter or columnist in San Diego County to mention that there was a viable Democratic congressional candidate running for Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham's abandoned seat. Cunningham as we all know has moved on to become the poster boy for Republican Corruption in Congress. He and Tom Delay make quite a pair.

The county's Republican Party chairman was openly boosting that the 50th District would never elect anyone but a Republican. He so much as said that a barely breathing Republican would beat anyone the Democrats could muster (including Thomas Jefferson and extending through at least Harry Truman).

Well, it seems that maybe the opinion makers are beginning to take notice that there is a new wind blowing in San Diego. Locals are tired of scandal from the San Diego City Hall to the halls of Congress. Duke Cunningham's emerging bribery and influence peddling case has soured a lot of moderate Republicans in his district. And, it was a district that didn't really see eye to eye with Duke on a number of key issues to begin with.

Today, San Diego Union Tribune columnist, Logan Jenkins , wrote an extremely positive column about Democratic candidate Francine Busby , pointing out that she has emerged as the candidate with the the positive buzz.

"[Busby is] a suburban Everywoman, the salt of the suburbs, the mother next door who runs the soccer league, serves on the library board, and in her spare time pushes for a school bond.

Look at C-Span and you won't see many like her in the nation's House.

Given the demise of an aristocrat like Duke, that might be her strongest suit."

Paul Hackett's campaign in Ohio combined with an aggressive Democratic Party, committed to contesting every seat in Congress, give energy to Busby's quest. And, a corrupt, overreaching Republican Party has opened the door for a breath of fresh air in Congress.

San Diego has been corrupt for decades
I wrote a diary that just skimmed the surface of San Diego corruption, Mayor Dick Murphy of San Diego Resigns.

It's about time the citizens got fed up.

Go, Francine.
Time to make them pay for every red inch of territory they claim.

CA-50 San Diego elects women candidates
People that are unfamiliar with SD political history may not know that there has been a trend over the past couple of decades for that part of
CA to elect Democratic women to office even when the district registration doesn't look especially good for Dems. Examples include Dede Alpert (mentioned in the article as being an inspiration for Busby)who used to win seats in the CA legislature that were considered to be GOP oriented (VR figures like 38%D-39%R and the like). Part of that is that coastal district independents tend to vote more Dem than those inland (environmental and social issue liberalism) but also a comfort level with women political figures lacking in some other areas. Some other examples from the Lege and Congress-- Lucy Killea, Susan Davis, Christine Kehoe, Lori Saldana and in city government the next Mayor of SD (we hope!) Donna Frye.  Let's cross our fingers for a bloody GOP primary that nominates a male wingnut...

CA-50
went only 54% for Bush in 2000. That's not horribly conservative.

The city of San Diego has already become safely Democratic (look at its two Reps - Susan Davis and Bob Filner). However, the suburbs around it (where CA-50 is based) are still Republican.

Ready for Change
This district is ready for change. There is no way that the Republican nominee is going to be able to completely seperate themselves from Duke's problems...
