Will the RNC pull out of the McCain Campaign?

here is a question I want to pose to everyone, and the front pagers should take it up drive the question, because seriously at this point.

if you were in charge of the RNC resources which would you allocate the bulk of your resources to?

The presidential race, where McCain is down an RCP average of 6 points and 100 electoral votes.

or to Congress where the economy has been boosting dems across the country and now 60 in the senate doesn't seem so crazy.

seriously will we get to the point where the RNC says forget it and basically stops spending alot for McCain instead for tight races in the house and senate?

No.

If only for Palin, the base would pitch a fit.

Re: Will the RNC pull out of the McCain Campaign?

If the RNC gets to the point you mention, it will happen next week as I believe this is McCain's last possible week to turn his faltering campaign around. But the economy is killing both McCain and Republican down ticket races, so why single out McCain? With nothing left to lose, they might as well go for broke and get it over with.

I mean come on people on the inside gotta see at this point that McCain's campaign is just crap.

why keep wasting money on them, when you are could possibly lose senate seats in Mississippi or Georgia!?

to me at this point spending for McCain just doesn't seem to make sense

It's possible

McConnell is probably more popular with the RNC than McCain.

But we would need to look at who is in charge there. Did McCain appoint new people who have spending authority?  Or are other Republicans in control?

Re: It's possible

McCain didn't do crap as I can remember the RNC and McCain campaign are pretty separate.

anyone know for sure?

Re: It's possible

By law they are required to remain separate.  In practice, they have done a significant amount of joint fund raising (where donor contribute maximum contributions of tens of thousands of dollars to the McCain campaign, state parties, and the RNC).  The RNC has also run anti-Obama ads.

They won't pull

out but if Obama maintains a large lead they will focus on the congressional contest.

They DON'T want to loose seats trying to stand by McCain if they conclude he can't win.

Re: Will the RNC pull out of the McCain Campaign?

The RNC has barely pitched in to help McCain out as he is well behind Obama in the amount of money available, which reflects in their AWOL status when it comes to bolster McCain's lagging advertising in pivotal states:

TV spending, week ending 9/30

Fri Oct 03, 2008 at 03:23:22 PM PDT

(In thousands)

State McCain  RNC        Obama         DNC

CO    464      0         979           1
 FL    436      4        3,100         18
 IA    151      0         157           0
 IN    0       41         415           1
 ME    0        0          2            0
 MI    292     63         754           1
 MN    202      0          66           0
 MO    104      0         356           6
 MT    0        0          47           0
 NC    47       0         688           3
 NH    96       0         258           0
 NM    147      0         254           1
 NV    299      0         737           3
 OH    485    103       1,217           0
 PA    942     69       1,882          14
 SC    0        0          67           0
 VA    93      25       1,215           5
 WI    295     26         666           1
 WV    23      11          43           0

Total:   5,239      337      13,371     52

Notice how the RNC does not even attempt to make up for McCain's money disadvantage in many of the pivotal states Obama now holds growing leads in.  Look at Florida, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada, Virginia.   The RNC has deep pockets and could help McCain make up some of his shortfall with negative advertising aimed at Obama, but there has been virtually nothing.  The RNC seeems lukewarm about McCain.   Hey, we take it.  :-)

Re: Will the RNC pull out of the McCain Campaign?

McCain should be running low on that $85 million.

but the RNC raised $66 million in September.

so it will be interesting if they use it for an October surprise or call it a day and continue this lackluster effort on his behalf

Re: Will the RNC pull out of the McCain Campaign?

McCain's big mistake, I think, was not throwing the RNC overboard in June.  If he'd picked Romney and stuck to his "straight talk" message who knows, maybe the race would still be tied?

Re: Will the RNC pull out of the McCain Campaign?

I don't think so. Congress was a lost cause a long time ago and the Republicans believe that God intended for them to rule from the White House. They will gladly toss everyone else overboard.

by RandyMI 2008-10-06 07:59PM | 0 recs
Congress is a lost cause

but blocking a filibuster-proof majority is not.  And the Repubs are coming dangerously close to putting that at jeopardy.  They would lose 7 seats today and a handful more are pretty competitive.

Re: Will the RNC pull out of the McCain Campaign?

Their 2 best chances to keep a 60 seat majority are in Minnesota, Mississippi, and Georgia.  That's really only 3 media markets, but Minneapolis and Atlanta are pretty expensive I don't think it will cost enough for them to have to divert any money from the McCain campaign, unfortunately.
