Clinton Should Schedule a Florida Victory Party

The deal struck between the candidates and the DNC whereby the candidates agreed not to campaign in the early states includes the following language:

THEREFORE, I pledge I shall not campaign or participate in any state which schedules a presidential election primary or caucus before Feb. 5, 2008, except for the states of Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina, as "campaigning" is defined by the rules and regulations of the DNC. It does not include activities specifically related to raising campaign resources such as fundraising events or the hiring of fundraising staff.

And here is a portion of the relevant DNC rules defining "campaigning," as referenced in the pledge:

A presidential candidate who campaigns in a state where the state party is in violation of the timing provisions of these rules, or where a primary or caucus is set by a state's government on a date that violates the timing provisions of these rules, may not receive pledged delegates or delegate votes from that state. Candidates may, however, campaign in such a state after the primary or caucus that violates these rules. (emphasis added)

Some people think that nobody is going to notice the tree falling in Florida's primary forest next Tuesday night.  I'm skeptical.

Everybody knows Florida is the Big Kahuna for the general election.  I just can't see Hillary's getting half a million votes and a 20-point victory in Florida as being something that doesn't even dent the national consciousness during a week of intense political tea-leaf-reading.

In fact, I would be willing to bet that the number of votes Clinton gets in Florida will exceed the total number of votes Obama has received in all caucuses and elections to date, including Florida.  Any takers?

Another factor: the Florida/Michigan delegate-count elephant in the room is going to be getting much larger and it will want more bananas.

But in case you still don't think the Florida Democratic primary is going to get play, there's something Hillary Clinton can do to ensure that it gets publicity, and it's something that is explicitly permitted by the agreement and the DNC rules, as outlined above.

She can hold a big ole victory party in the ballroom of the fanciest hotel in downtown Miami.  If the polls close at 8:00, her jet can touch down on the tarmac at 8:05 and she can arrive at the party at the appropriate time for a victory speech.

Nothing Obama can do about it except whine some more, and we see what that's been buying him so far.

After Saturday, the four state pledge...

...Is essentially meaningless, so I believe Hillary should beat it to Florida and definitely have a victory party.

Re: Clinton Should Schedule a Florida Victory Part

Definitely.  She should thank the people of Florida for their trust in her and promise to fight like heck to see that their voices are heard at the convention!

They need to do something.

But I find it hard to believe that Penn if there is mileage in it hasn't already come to this conclusion. They need to get this on the national radar but given the intra party politics involved it's probably tricky. Of one thing I'm sure Penn, Wolfson et al will do all they humanly can to make sure it gets exposure. My pure guesstimate is she's going to get over 55% of vote while Obama will be in high thirties. Edwards around 6%. In other words a picture not dissimilar to MI.

AND YA DONT HAVE TO RENT OUT ANYTHING.

two important words make throwing a big expensive event - free...

Slight correction

The deal struck between the candidates and the DNC whereby the candidates agreed not to campaign in the early states includes the following language:

That deal was between the candidates and the dem leaders in the 4 early states NOT the DNC. The DNC rules originally called for 50% reduction of delegates and no campaigning or you couldn't get the delegates. But the rule committee decided that Florida wouldn't get any delegates and said nothing about campaigning (they removed their possible punishment for it in the process).

The early states decided to further punish Florida by creating the pledge after the DNC handed down their punishment. And the candidates went along with it.
