MyDD 5 . :-(

Overall, the new MyDD isn't really working for me.   I have really enjoyed MyDD over the years, but the new design isn't conducive to the type of community interaction that I associate with this site. Here's why.

First,  this design isn't about functionality - its about advertising. The site has been pulled down 1/3 of the page and pushed to the right to make way for two ad spots on the main page. They didn't do that to help make the site work better, they did it so they could run two ads on the main page.

And ads are ok, but honestly what is the best kind of ad? Is it something that is randomly generated on site hit or should it have something to do with what you are interested in?  Google search results ads actually work well - for example, I was looking for someone to repair my washing machine yesterday. Jerome, are you listening?

I googled the repair outlets, and yea, sure, my kenmore had a sears authorized repair ad on the top of the page. Well, guess what. I clicked on it.  It worked for me.

I am viewing MyDD right now on a T1 line that I run to my home. Why would I need blog advertisements for comcast internet service? Further, the blog ads are vague. Comcast - Dream Big.  NBCU Transaction? What is that ?

MyDD Screen real estate is valuable. I really feel this site should be mining the end users. Cut a deal with Google, Jerome.  Let them do the advertising thing for this site.

And now. On to cosmetics. Blue and black dialogue boxes aren't working for me. We use blue background in office printouts for easier reading, but on a web page I really miss the goldenrod. The logo is gold, but its the only place on the entire layout that you see the color. Everything else is black and blue. I think blockquote should be changed to be the gold color it used to bem.

Finally, it just seems strange on my copy of IE 8 that the top fonts for home rec list, etc. are all GIANT CAPS.  There is an intuitive, look and feel to MyDD - and having extremely large letters across the top screen is not it.

And of course, the rec. system for comments is taken away - which, my understanding is - that there was alot of trolling going on. So, now we have an undemocratic way of comment ranking.

My guess is that myDD will undergo a few more changes before all is said and done but for what its worth the changes so far don't really do it for me. I am just one voice. But my vote is to rollback a few things.  Get rid of the random blog ads no one is clicking on anyway - and go for a targetted per-click model within the text of the blog itself.  And find some way of bringing back some of the character of it all.

Now, what I would really like to see is myDD transformed into a google Wave  - that would be really cool. To see what people are typing realtime.  Interact with others on this site realtime. That would be fun.

But then again, wave isn't fully baked yet. Maybe the site changes here, are not either... good luck jerome.

If I got used to

Windows 2007, I can get used to this.

My only real complaint is that you can't just look at your comments.  I really, really, very thoroughly enjoy doing this.

By the way, Windows 2007 has grown on me a lot, so that isn't an insult to Jerome!  Just a reminder to myself to be patient.

RE: RE: If I got used to

I figured as much.  We're all hanging in there with you until it gets smoothed out.  Nice work (in progress).

RE: If I got used to

There is no product called Windows 2007.

There is Windows Vista... There is Windows 7... There is Windows Server 2008.

Whoa! I came back tonight and the blog is cleaning up nicely. No gigantic banner ads anywhere. State blogrolls and an improved comments system. Nice! Getting there.

RE: RE: If I got used to

Apparently I haven't gotten used to the name yet.  Hmm.

The revision was probably introduced prematurely without a beta tryout.

Be that as it may, we will probably jave to struggle for a month or so so that this newer version eventually comes up to the functioning of the previous one.

I still can't see the rec list or diary list in the right column on the home page, but I'm sure that it will eventually arrive.

ads and such

same ad strips that existed before, nothing changed there. Just that CSM is running them now more often I guess. Other than that, yea, just browser issues. It'll come around.

Gotta agree with Trey here...

...about the absence of a proper ratings system.

I know this site has been trolled a lot in the last year. I also know that the ratings thing can be misused, and the trusted user status was somewhat moot when regular posters could just be arbitrarily banned, but MYDD remains the blogfather of the modern progressive community blog precisely because we had the ability to moderate ourselves - to hide comment free opinions, troll nasty ones, and rec up the funny, insightful or informative comments.

It's what turned me onto this whole blogging phenomenon - not just a top down hero worship, or anti-hero flame, but a peer to peer network of values, perpetuated and patrolled by a community.

Without the full array of HR's and RECS, we're suddenly back again of passive consumers of meaning, rather than being producers of it.

I hope they come back. Much more important than any design or coding issue for me is this feeling of community....

RE: Gotta agree with Trey here...

Tell you what would really bring back a sense of community is if the house stood up to the Senate, and stood strong on a National Health Service.

No kidding, I had a dream last night and I woke up from it , hearing the sound of cheering and public exultation that the House of Representatives actually heard the voices of us all - it was a kind of vote that happened - and we got to see the outcome?

I was a reporter, and I was in the gallery - I was wearing a pair of Orange Surf Trunks. I was just telling a fellow reporter how difficult it was for anyone to take you seriously, in Washington, DC - when you show up wearing Orange Surf trunks - when the vote came back that the Conference Committee that is merging the two bills decided to go with the National Health Service as an element of the final bill on a vote of 617 to 88 or something like that.

And the entire gallery just erupted in applause.   Seriously, the issue of real reform unites us all.

RE: Gotta agree with Trey here...

I plan to bring it back in with stages, seeing what works. Starting with the rec's and flags. Seems to work better already, and will add improvements.

regarding block quotes

I think I prefer the goldenrod color.

Ok it looks like the random blog ad thing is almost done

They took away the big banner ad space, above the title. This is a good thing, since banner ads will not cross over the myDD logo space at the top third of the page. Or play with navigation.

but theres still this huge banner ad right above me when I am trying to comment -  Which does not work at all.

And there is also a banner ad image in the left that pushes the blog ad network advertisements down.

I am pretty sure the blogAd network is an RSS feed - however, imho there is still a way to make it really work for myDD and at the same time get rid of these pesky banner ads .

And let me clarify. I AM NOT AGAINST ADVERTISTING. I am against banner advertising. A banner is a graphically designed ad whose image is often hosted on another company's server. This puts a variability into the layout of the page that is unacceptable.

Also, banner images are not text-searchable. They can't be processed.  At least, last time I checked ruby on rails didn't have the AI to strip out a JPG and drop text from it.

Ok, so anyway, here's my idea:

  • Take the blog ad network feed and strip it down to text.
  • Format it so that its organized and ranked and bullet point
  • Sort the bullets in order according to a user's comment pattern
  • Tell the blog ad network, and anyone else. That you're doing that.
  • Then make it easy for the blog ad people to get their statistics on click-through. Six gets you ten the banner ad statistics are going to be kind of vague. Let the people who advertise here see their click through easily and quickly - you publish the stats, not someone else.
  • Do the same thing for the banner ad that's right up on top of my head here while I am trying to comment. The one thats BLINKING.

Then after you're done, wait about two, three months - watch your bank account and say welcome to the boomtown. And then Jerome can get back to stripping the medals off my chest and tearing my shoulderboards off.

Took a year off college and he never went back...

RE: Ok it looks like the random blog ad thing is almost done

Is the comment system actually to myDD site itself? I am seeing a strange thing. The comment system looks like an Echo feed.

Echo suspicions continue.. JS Echo kit...

I am beginning to wonder if comments are being handled by a product called 'Echo' ?

I  hit a poll, and clicked on the answer to the question to cast my vote - and it sent me a required login page (the logins seem to be expiring really fast - one thing facebook does that I like is keep you logged in - on the new MyDD it seems like you are always logging in again every day) --- ok so I logged in, and then it said "not found"

Did this occur from a 404 not found message? Are the comments being handled by the Echo software?

by Trey Rentz 2010-01-07 10:20AM | 0 recs
Don't think it is JS-Kit/Echo

If it is it is a different feature set than that at Angry Bear where we do not seem to have blockquote support and images are uploaded from a button on the bottom of the comment box.

But Echo does mysterious (and often frustrating things) so who knows for sure.

RE: Echo suspicions continue.. JS Echo kit...

Everything you see here was built custom for the netroots2 platform.

The feature to keep you logged in is now actually working and a checkbox is available at login to turn that on.

RE: Ok it looks like the random blog ad thing is almost done

Whatever. Its the same ad system, CMS, same ad spots, as what existed previously with MyDD. If they run an ad, its there, if not, its not there.

CSM.  I actually got rid of one ad-- Pulse 360.

RE: MyDD 5 . :-(

Totally not working for me, sorry.  The thing I liked most about MyDD was the elegance of the formatting of diaries and comments which is pretty much gone now.  Long live the written word with plenty of white space to meditate in between sentances.  Way to busy and Huffington Postish for my tastes now, in presentation if not, thank God, in content.

And no way to preview a comment or am I missing something?  <i>Sacre Bleu</i>.
