Free Form MyDD Technical Gripes

I'm really getting pissed off at the new format changes that went into effect for MyDD about a year or so ago. Ok, well it seems like a year....

First, I can't reply to any comment. There is no threading anymore, for me. I use IE 8, and when I reply - the screen locks up.

Second, editing and creating diaries is S L O W - there is some kind of external editor being used, and its always cranky and slow.

Third, the organization and layout of the page is awkward. In web design there is a 'golden square' at the right lower section of your browser. This 'golden square' is where you can resize your window and still have mouse focus on almost any device. Well, MyDD looks awful on my smaller devices - and the diaries are in the exact opposite corner - harder to reach and just plain awkward. Diaries used to be a fun part of this blog.

Overall, I really don't like the big banner ads, slow response, and awkward layout.  Is anyone else in this boat? Am I alone?

MyDD used to be kind of a more 'craigslist' type format, it loaded fast, there was great threading and diary.

I vote we RETURN to the old format completely.

;)

anyone else?

Most people have adjusted to the new format and it seems to work once you get the knack.

I think it is here to stay, polls notwithstanding.

RE: Most people have adjusted to the new format and it seems to work once you get the knack.

I just replied to your comment. Hit post. Guess how long it took to actually post. No lie, it takes 45 seconds... reply to posting is heavily bugged.

You don't acquiesce bugs, mainstreet. You kill them.

I like the new tool bar

with the bold, italics, quote, link icons, but I would like a more Daily kos STYLE layout, where you can shrink and hide comments on the same page.

When I went to vote in my own poll

When I voted in my own poll on this diary, I had to login to record the vote.

I logged in, and then the page went to a 404 not found and it said it the page did not exist, and then I hit the back button and lo and behold I'm logged in.

I don't care how many people have 'adjusted' to the new format - and I really resent the concept that you have to "get the knack" of it.

The new layout and code is bugged. It always has been. That's why Jerome had to roll back and forth nearly three times when he launched, and nobody liked it then. And nobody likes it now. The poll results don't lie.  Saying you have to get the "knack" of an inferior platform is a lie. You throw away inferior platforms, and not get used to them.

I mean, here's the concept - Jerome has basically externalized this site - farmed out the ad network so that's all external content, the editor seems to be loading as external content, and the logins are all "shared" logins now? And you have to login, what - five times a week?

I really hate the concept that I have to login to facebook somewhere, just to comment. They suck when it comes to privacy.

And in politics, privacy counts for something.

KOS gets pummeled with viewers, and not in the least because he makes his interface flexible, light, and easy to use. The editor never hangs like it does here. The polls don't point to 404 error messages when you vote in them.

And I swear to you, there are days in which myDD takes literally 30 seconds to load. Because some blogAd network content is bugged, or the externalized pieces of this new design are slow loader.

And I'm accessing this site on a fuckin' T3 line.

And as Joanna Angel says.. So it goes..

And to prove my point, I replied again to mainstreet above who seemed to say "it's here to stay"..

So the third level reply to that post, I hit reply. The entire browser locked up. I could not hit post or reply.

And I had to refresh the entire page, and post down here instead of thread. That's why there are not more really great threads in this place - and the diaries are suffering. People get one sniff of that kind of thing , and they just leave.

Today 8/26/10 - Priceless Error

Today, when I hit MyDD - there was a warning bar across the top of my screen b/c the darn site tried to download a file to my hard drive.

Just classic bad design. I'm not sure if this is part of the layout - or some kind of advertister trying to install an active x control - but it's awful.

ITS A BETA!!!

Yea, all these are bugs that are on beta. The main code line no has none of these. I have a dozen sites in Brazil running on it with blogs, and here in the US, a number of sites in staging.

Have to get around to basically migrating the content here to a new instance, as this code is 8 months old and it wouldn't make sense to try and upgrade it.

Feature-wise, I also had to wait for user-diaries to be built, and that's happening right now. Next week, I expect the migration of MyDD will be put into a milestone-- means 2-3 weeks away at most.

Gonna happen, but in the meantime, am enjoying the catalogue of errors-- should give you a lighthouse acct for making tickets and let you go at it (though I think you might piss off the developers with your added commentary to the errors).
