an outsiders view of hackett v brown

This is my first diary, in fact, I just registered even though I've been reading MyDD, DailyKos, SSP, and TPM since about January 2004. I was inspired to register and post by the discussion regarding the Ohio senate race.

To be honest, I've been a fan of Jerome and Kos for months, and Sherrod Brown may very well be the best candidate to take on DeWine, but the idea that Tim Tagaris and Jerome should post on this race with the same authority as others is preposteris.

Both Tim and Jerome would roast anyone else for claiming independence while they collected a paycheck from an interested party.

Is it possible that their opinion would be the same whether they worked for Brown or not?
Sure.
Is it also suspect that they conveniently support the candidate who pays them?
Yes.

With Chris Bowers,DavidNYC, and Bod Brigham all great bloggers and smart people, the two employees of Sherrod Brown should leave the discussion to them.

Personally I tend to trust both of them that their opinions are not colored by their employment or personal relationships, but I do think it in poor taste for the two of them to come out soooo strongly for Brown while simultaneously claiming that their opinions are based on completely independent analyses.

Think for one moment whether Jerome, Kos, and/or Tim would criticize employees of Paul Hackett for immediately posting positive-Hackett/negative-Brown stories. I doubt whether they would conclude a paycheck from the candidate meant nothing to the writer's opinion.

So please, spare us the moral outrage that your motives are questioned, there are real reasons for that: you are EMPLOYEES of one of the candidates. Surely any fairminded person can see that there are valid questions there.

Finally, I support Paul Hackett in this debate, but think Sherrod Brown would be a great Senator too. What bothers me is that Brown supporters are attacking Hackett supporters for being not pro-Hackett but anti-Brown while at the same time they claim that Hackett is not progressive without evidence, that Hackett is too inexperienced despite ample evidence, and that Brown can raise money easier while ignoring that if not for Brown's flip-flop Hackett would easily have raised the money Brown will now take.

From my perspective a Brown-backed Hackett would be the next Senator from Ohio, but a Brown vs DeWine or a Brown-less Hackett race will result in the re-election of Mike DeWine.

Sherrod Brown could've ensured a Democratic takeover, but his personal ambition clouded his judgement and now, its a far more ambiguous race.

Brown's Race
Hackett is great for Ohio Democrats, and should do whatever it takes to help the ticket in 2006 be a winning one.  To do that, he should support Sherrod Brown's Senate candidacy like Sherrod supported his congressional campaign.  Sherrod helped Hackett raise money and gave him every bit of support he needed to run the great race he ran.  Hackett supporters should not attack Sherrod, they should help him.  One good turn deserves another.

Hackett should continue his political life and work hard to expand his influence as a leader in Ohio Democratic politics.  He can do the party a lot of good, and certainly can infuse it wih thr 'can do' attitude that made him a good Marine and a good candidate.  His time will come.

Until then, let's get behind Sherrod and work hard for him.  We don't need a fight within the party.  We need to take the fight to the other guys.

Re: Brown's Race
Of all the positioning and spin that Brown supporters are doing, this one bugs me the most.

Re: Brown's Race
That's something that bothers me as well. It seems that suddenly all of these top bloggers have decided that Hackett himself was nothing and that anything he did should be credited to Brown. It transparent crap.

Also, saying Brown can win because he used to be Ohio SOS is laughable. DavidNYC was attacked for citing a poll from 2001 over at DKos but people think that because someone won a race almost TWENTY years ago that somehow proves they could win Senate now. Seems like they're grasping for any reason to "prove" their guy no matter how lame the reason.
