NY Senator Joins Real World Cast in Iowa

See what happens when a senator from NY joins the real world and starts taking questions from real people.

So Hillary voted for what Jim Webb called "Cheney's fondest dream" the resolution on  Iran and the brainchild of "no one wants the troops out more than I do" Lieberman.

Edwards has been to all 99 counties in Iowa ususally going to 3-4 towns a day.  However, the Senator from NY is special in that she never takes press questions after her appearances as other candidates standardly do.

The Senator from NY also seems to have taken a page from the Bush Campaign style of carefully controlling town halls.

NEW HAMPTON, Iowa -- At a campaign stop here, Hillary Clinton sparred verbally for several minutes with a man who pressed her on her recent vote to call Iran's army a terrorist organization.

Randall Rolph, from nearby Nashua,  asked why he should support Clinton's candidacy when she did not appear to have learned any lessons from having voted to authorize force in Iraq.

Clinton thanked him for the question and explained her Iran vote would lay the groundwork for using diplomacy and sanctions to pressure that government.

Clinton accused the man of being a plant who had been sent to ask the question, to which he took exception, saying the question was a result of his own research.

"I apologize," Clinton said, explaining that she had been asked the very same question in three other places.

....

Rolph said after the event that he was a registered Democrat who had come with an open mind but that he would not be supporting Clinton after the way she responded.

"Who in this room believes we aren't going to attack Iran before Bush leaves office?" Rolph said.

kind of funny the type of question many of us would ask is considered being a "plant"..

yikes..

Here's another account http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2007/10/07/clintons_iran_vote_prompts_a_h.html
Well, let me thank you for the question, but let me tell you that the premise of the question is wrong and I'll be happy to explain that to you," Clinton began. She offered a detailed description of the resolution, which she said stressed robust diplomacy that could lead to imposing sanctions against Iran, and then pointedly said to Rolph that her view wasn't in "what you read to me, that somebody obviously sent to you.""I take exception," Rolph interjected. "This is my own research.""Well then, let me finish," Clinton responded. Rolph, from nearby Nashua, fired back that no one had sent him the material. "Well, then, I apologize. It's just that I've been asked the very same question in three other places," she said.
scold the poor guy and then accuse him of asking someone else's question.
When the event was over, Rolph was surrounded by reporters and said he felt the need to stand his ground when Clinton challenged him: "She tried to ... accuse me of using someone else's words and being stupid. And that offended me. I felt the need to defend myself in view of that kind of comment." Had he come to the meeting supporting any candidate? "I came here with an open mind, that's why I had to ask this question. By asking this question, that was going to be the defining moment for me. But it has been a defining moment," Rolph said.

I guess the last time the NY Senator took a non-scripted question it was this..
in NH.

This guy is a plant, probably an Obama plant. We did some google search. He's very active on some sort of 'progressive blog' in Iowa. He is definitely a Hillary hater. His direct link to either Obama or Edwards campaign is yet to be determined.

NYT

Oct 6th NYT

"The one thing about Iowa is that we always have the ability to bring a reality check to the country," said Randall Rolph, 56, who came with his son to see Mr. Obama, of Illinois, and plans to return Sunday when Mrs. Clinton arrives for a campaign stop.

Just do a simple google search. This guy is extremely active in local politics. There is no reason to believe he is simply a normal 'undecided voter'.

Haven't searched his donation history, and I wouldn't be surprised to find more stuff.

I also wouldn't be surprised if he's a rabid Hillary basher on either dailykos or myDD.

Re: Randall Rolph

So because he's active in politics, he's a plant.

Lovely reasoning there.

Re: Randall Rolph

We'll definitely do some research. A certain pattern seems to emerge in Hillary's Iowa swing.

Opponent campaigns dispatch fols disgused as 'undecides' to disrupt her various events.

We will definitely keep an eye on this pattern. It any link is found, you can bank there will be backlash.

Don't mess with Hillary.

Re: Randall Rolph

"Don't mess with Hillary."

Don't "mess" with her or what?

Did Murdoch loan her some goons from Fox Security?

No wonder Obama had to get secret service protection.

Re: Randall Rolph

Wow.  Way to take a simple comment out of context and fly off the handle.   So, now we are up to Murdoch goons doing the "roughing up" bidding for Clinton.   Nice.

Re: Randall Rolph

Oh, please.  You think NO ONE does research?  Watch c-span?  Listen to NPR?  On blog sites?

You need to get informed.  If that man was a "plant" he would have been called out by now.  You better believe they checked him out, and guess what he is a "citizen", a "joe blow", a "democratic constiuent".

She just got angry at the questions.  People want her to be up front and ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.  Which she has a very hard time doing.

Folks are not running on stupid.  There is a reason she is in Iowa and McAuliffe just left there.  This is not sewn up by a long shot.  And she keep insinuating locals are "plants" or "out to get me", she might as well pack up from Iowa, right now.

Re: NY Senator Joins Real World Cast in Iowa

Why bother asking Hillary any questions at all? Her supporters don't care where she stands on the issues, they just "want her" for all sorts of non-compelling reasons...it's all emotion, nostalgia, and a desire to break a glass ceiling.

Please non-Hillary supporters, please stop engaging these people in substantive discussion about the merits of Clinton. It's useless, they just "want her so bad."

Give them Hillary, let her serve out her terms, and then we'll have checked off that box. Then, we can get back to electing someone to usher in real change. Eight years ain't all that long. Plus, if she loses the general, we can put up a viable challenger in 4.

Look on the bright side. She can't be any worse than Bush...or any of the GOP contenders.

Don't allow your depression to keep you home from the polls. It's not about supporting Hillary, it's about defeating the GOP.

Unless you're black...then don't vote at all since both parties use us as tokens. The Dems pander to us and the GOP stokes animus against us.

They can both go to hell!!!

Re: NY Senator Joins Real World Cast in Iowa

Very nice. Your desire to select a unqualified African American politician is actually much stronger than Many Hillary supporters' desire to merely elect a woman.

by areyouready 2007-10-07 05:11PM | 0 recs
Re: NY Senator Joins Real World Cast in Iowa

"a[n] unqualified African American politician."

Yeah, I was really hoping that Affirmative Action would kick  in for Obama. The same sort that helped him graduate magna cum laude from Harvard Law.

For you information, I don't think that women support Hillary just because she's a woman. I imagine they wouldn't be support Condi, Liddy Dole, or Kay Baily Hutchinson. See, I give women more credit than that, and much more than you are capable of giving black people.

But this wouldn't be the first bigoted comment from you.

You'd love Obama, so long as he stayed in his place. A whole lot of whites in the dem establishment are like that. Black folks are a-ok so long as they provide you with a useful backdrop. But if they ever stand up and rightfully challege you, then they are just an "unqualified African-American."

You see, Obama running pisses Hillary off way more than anyone else because she assumes that blacks folks are supposed to fall in line behind a Clinton. No, it's ok for a buffoon like Sharpton to run, because you can look down at his crazy ass. But when a guy like Obama runs, well, he's a viable candidate. Black folks aren't supposed to run viable candidates. We're supposed to be happy just being in the race for comic humor and free fried chicken.

Sometimes you begin to appreciate the outright racial hostility from the GOP. At least you know where they stand. There's no pretense to respecting black folks there. Then again, with Areyouready, there's no pretense either.

Re: NY Senator Joins Real World Cast in Iowa

What made him qualify to be president? State legislator? Community organizer? Don't tell me if he's a white politican, he would have gotten exactly the same hype from the media.

I admit Hillary got lots of attention because of she's a woman and because of her link to president Clinton. But that doesn't change the fact she is the most qualified, tough and smart candidate in the field.

Your constant harking back to Obama's race is very dishonest to say the least. In his case, his background actually helps him, not hinder his national profile.

Re: NY Senator Joins Real World Cast in Iowa

"Don't tell me if he's a white politican, he would have gotten exactly the same hype from the media."

And why does that make you so angry? Why do you find that so offensive?

I agree that Obama's race has helped him garner media hype. But what about our previous black candidates? Why were they never able to garner the same traction as Obama. Why were they never viable? Can you answer that question?

Also, funny how--in polite conversation--people can say it's "time" for a women (and it is). But you never hear people arguing that  it's "time" for a black person or a person of color. Somehow that would strike people as uncouth. Why is that?

Re: NY Senator Joins Real World Cast in Iowa

But, like I've said before. For you, Obama's blackness only serves to reinforce his "inexperience" thus rendering him a mere unqualified African-American. It goes to the very heart of how you, and many other Americans, view race.

With all the sexist sentiments behind attacks on Hillary, you should be able to relate.

Re: NY Senator Joins Real World Cast in Iowa

You let your strong desire to elect an African American president blindside your judgement. Nothing wrong with that. But do you honestly believe if a white politican with similar background as Obama won't get called out on his/her lack of experience?

To me, Obama has shown nothing special during those debates. He's been repeating those talking points over and over and shown very little understanding of details. Unqualified may sound a bit harsh, but it is just a fact. Unqualified now does not mean he won't be qualify tomorrow. He has to earn support, don't just count on media hype.

Obviously, you seem to view everything through race prism, that's your choice. I really have nothing to add, but good luck.

Re: NY Senator Meets a Real Iowan;

Sorry, but who decides not to vote for something because they are "scared" it might be used the wrong way even though a yes is the right way to vote and the vote approves nothing of what people are worried about?  What kind of leader is that?  A COWARD.  Hillary might be female but it's obvious who the "frightened little girls" are.

This does reveal

one fundamental differince in Obama and Hillary in that Obama has never (to my knowledge) yelled down a heckler or argued with a questioner - even when he is attacked for is race or his name he takes the higher ground.
