The areas most affected by the fires in San Diego County are Republican districts. That's why the White House finally woke up to the situation. I have no explanation for the Repub candidates, unless they've already written off California.
For years now, Democrats should have been saying to the voters: The U.S. can either occupy Iraq OR it can attempt to effectively combat international terrorism -- but it can't do both. Mr. Bush has made his choice, and it's been a disaster. We need to get out of Iraq so we can begin to combat the terrorists.
In fact, however, Bush and his cronies, almost all Republicans, and many Democrats, including Senator Clinton, are adhering to Mort Sahl's old line: "It's a dirty little war, but it's the only one we've got."
I think one of the main reasons the 2008 Presidential race is starting so early is because most Americans want Bush gone yesterday, so starting to worry about a successor helps to while away the dangerous hours he has left.
Despite this poll and others showing similar results, there is as yet no electoral evidence that America's largely frightened and detached voters understand that Bush and the Republicans are miserable failures as regards national security. Therefore, Democrats should be working extra hard on this issue (e.g., Bush 'cut and ran' from Bin Laden, so five years after 9/11, we still have airplane bombers).
I've always thought it interesting that former Mayor Giuliani became a national hero and Time Magazine's "Man of the Year" in 2001 by merely showing up for work and trying to do his job on 9/11. I've never seen it mentioned, but he gained his notoriety by doing what Bush, Cheney and company were afraid to do that day: stay on the job. Although the 9/11 Commission members might have a problem with Giuliani's behavior on 9/11, I would rather they provide the public with information about what Bush was doing while he ran and hid -- not once, but twice -- that day.
What do you think Bush II's god-awful performance has done to Bush III's (the one in Florida) chances to get to the White House? Bush III is probably angrier at Bush II than any other Republican in the country right now.
The GOP is likely to nominate Florida Bush for president one of these days -- Republicans can't seem to get enough of the Bushes. But how about the voters?
9/11 illustrated to me how the social contract in this country is broken. That is, the federal government is now much more interested in protecting itself than in protecting the American people.
Remember, only citizens onboard Flight 93 fought back that day, and only local firefighters, police officers, healthcare workers, and municipal officials tried to help the victims of the attacks. New York Mayor Giuliani gained hero status that day simply by doing his job.
Meanwhile, where were Bush and the other members of his woeful administration? They all ran and hid. Bush hid twice, first in Louisiana and then in Nebraska. He then sneaked back into Washington after dark.

No surprise here. Most columnists are old well-to-do white guys. Most old, well-to-do white guys are Republicans.
Well done. The American people have to end the occupation of Iraq. The politicians cannot do it.
Senator Clinton obviously has a strong inclination to engage in politics, but I've never noticed that she has any real aptitude for it.
If the FCC wants to keep vulgarity off the regulated air, start with Imus.
I agree. In fact, I would prefer her in the White House than any of the announced candidates for the office.

Senator Clinton probably noticed that Lieberman got back in the Senate by BSing his position on Iraq. Maybe she thinks it will work for her.

Today's Republicans: Bad Ideas, Poorly Executed.

I'm contributing to Busby's campaign.
