The mid 80s called, they want their homophobic arguments back. Is this guy also afraid that he might be sharing public bathrooms with HIV-positive people?
If you think about it, the $5M middle class answer is probably because that's how much the McCains make in a so-so year. They're estimated to be worth about $100M, so a 5% return is an average year. McCain probably made 10M/yr in the late 90s, and more like $2-3M this past year, so when he was asked, he probably estimated based on what his income looked like in an ok year.
The question, of course, is whether Bush got an honorable discharge because Daddy was important, whereas if he were some average schmo he'd have been shipped to Vietnam. So just saying "He got an honorable discharge, therefore he served honorably, Q.E.D." doesn't really help the debate. From the above quote- "Some experts say they remain mystified as to how Bush obtained an honorable discharge." No mystery at all, really...
As some else (Drum? Marshall?) said, every new piece of evidence that has come out shows that attacks on Kerry's service are lies, while every new piece of evidence shows that attacks on Bush's service are true.
I find it quite funny that both sides have now declared the case "definitively, absolutely, positively closed!!" Unfortunately, each side has declared victory for themselves- Kossacks quote experts who say typewriters could have made the documents, righties say that doesn't matter, they were still forged.
This, of course, is how the right operates- even when facts prove you wrong, keep insisting you're right or that there's some controversy so it will be reported as a debate and people not carefully watching will still be confused. See also Cheney, Dick, and Iraq/Osama. It also keeps the focus off of stuff that's bad for your side, like this excerpt.
