That quote about dating made me miss my native New England even more.  The women here in Texas are beautiful, but in the last year I have only met one woman with a degree in anything, and I've met a lot of women in the 27-35 age range.  However, they all have been much nicer than the women back home...

I think I will start administering that test to all prospective dates ;)

Agreed.  Just like a lot of people think NASA gets 10-20% or more of are budget, when I believe they get less that 1%.

Also, I don't even like the question.  I think too much money is going to silly toys like the Paladin and Star Wars and too little is going to body armor and armored vehicles.  So which do I check off in that survey?

Does it have to be a health care question, or can it be something important?

I kid, but serious question, at least the first half.

  • If this ad came out in Jan 2008, then maybe it would make a difference.  All posting it this early does is defuse the ability of anyone to use it when it matters.

That said, I speak from complete ignorance as I haven't seen it yet and never thought the original was anything special.

  • "Hate crimes" is one of the stupidest terms ever imagined.  Who came up with that?  How many violent crimes that don't involve property AREN'T motivated by some sort of hate?

If people want to gain traction, then maybe you should call a spade a spade and start referring to it as domestic terrorism, be it organized like the KKK or decentralized like random gay bashings and mosque burnings.

I can understand the "marginal candidate haters" but the "other haters?"  "Other" could be anyone.  What if Jesus got into the race?  They are so going to hell.

But maybe people are just sick of how big the feild is, and the games being played by Clark and maybe even Gore.

  • I came here to say all sorts of stuff, and you guys pretty much said exactly what I was going to say.  I guess I'm obsolete.

Ooooh I just thought of a good one.

You have to chug a beer if he lies again and claims he cut the deficit in half, and you have to chug another beer when every single Democrat rolls over and plays dead rather than challenge this blatently false statistic.

Y'all are thinking inside the box, except for the suggestion of invented words or grossly mispronounced words.  I like that.

But we need bonus words.  Keg-stand words.  Like "animal-human hybrid" or "switchgrass."  Is there anything out in left field that might come up?  What has been an important issue for one wing or another that he can pander to with some dog-whistle politics without actually committing any time, effort or money?

    How about "amniotic stem cells?"

Something for the eco crowd, like "plug-in hybrid" or "solar-whatever."  Reference to the fusion project?  The "hydrogen economy" myth was big in one of his speeches, along with energy independence.  Think he'll ring that bell again?  Gotta love plans that wont take place for 20 years from now.

Any other hot buttons you can think of?

As for more conventional, how about a drink for every pre-spun word, like "death tax" or "tax relief."

    "Technologies like this one, LGBD..."

I think someone confused LGDB and LGBT and made some sort of hideous hybrid out of them.  I picture a server with a feather boa.  I wonder if this is one of those hybrids Bush warned about in his address...

  • To nitpick your nipick, I think it's trivial to broadcast power to the chips over a wide area at significant range, so I wouldn't count on that for security.  Also, some phones still track you even when they are off, but unless they are GPS phones it's not very accurate.

But the point here is that ANYONE (not just big brother or cell phone companies) can track you, or tell who is in a crowd.  Using a directional antenna, ANY evil-doer can monitor crowds from a safe distance until he determines enough Americans or the right people are in an area before setting off an attack.  A sophisticated attacker could even automate the entire process, and set a threshold for a certain number or type of victim and leave the area.

Scheier is a legend, and his textbook Applied Cryptography is not only the Bible of the field but it is an interesting and at times even entertaining read.  The only other technical textbook author I can say anything like that about is Tannenbaum.

Anyway, this is serious criticism from a serious and respected security guru.  I hope the traditional press looks away from TomKat long enough to notice.

  • Crimes should be investigated, and if that leads to impeachment, so be it.

But if it appears you've made that that your conclusion and then made the evidence fit the conclusion... that is not a politically wise move, even if it is just and right.  It will be seen as the same old same-old and will make Bush more popular as people side with the perceived underdog.  Look at how Clinton's popularity was affected by his impeachment.

It really is one of the best TV dramas, ever, and one of the best sci-fi series, ever.  It's quite possibly the best show on television right now.

Real politics, real science for the most part (nukes instead of photon torpedos, and no heisenberg compensators, thank you) and tons of real development of complex characters.  And often the treatment of politics forces you to see and even agree with the other side.  I even felt bad for Baltar (a main bad guy) in one episode, and they aren't afriad to occasionally kill off charaters.  And the score is great, too.

The only other sci-fi I really liked for it's character development was ST DS9, and it turns out it's by the same guy.
