Writing bloggy-style!

Mooching over at Kos, I see a front-page note of a diary with an interesting title.

I go there - to find a slab of prose fit for John O'Sullivan's Democratic Review. No fewer than 2,200 words!

From a quick scan, I'd say he could have made his points in a quarter the length, and it would still have been too long.

Over here, we get a similar problem, often, with pols' staffers posting undigested chunks of their masters' wit and wisdom. Or other folks posting stuff written for other media than blogs.

Now, I'm not saying, let's censor, or anything so un-American. (Pause for hollow laugh.) But - shorter and more bloggy probably gets more readers.

Just like Gettysburg. Which would you rather have left to posterity - Lincoln's 272 words, or Edward Everett's 13,607?

Oh - and, in case you were wondering, this piece of deathless prose took 148 words. Including these.

Re: Writing bloggy-style!

Short and to the point.  Well put.  As much as I love reading some of the great rants and informative posts both here and on Kos, it seems summarizing and the ability to condense information into a fewer number of words is becoming a lost art.
