Better than John Edwards....for Obama.

Re: DMR Endorses Clinton, McCain

Funny thing is once Obama's name came up, then Clinton supporters were laughing saying they haven't endorsed a candidate who has won the Iowa caucus, and that it's stupid that one state has so much power.

Wow, this is huge! HUGE!

No, it's not. I'm glad it's my candidate, but I stand by what I said before.

Re: DMR Endorses Clinton, McCain

I'll take the endorsement happily, but that doesn't change the fact that Iowa and NH do have too much power over the process.  It needs to change, and sooner rather than later.

Re: DMR Endorses Clinton, McCain

It speaks for itself: "I wanted to get the first diary up."  Hehe.

I kinda question the judgment of this editorial board...

McCain would enter the White House with deep knowledge of national-security and foreign-policy issues. He knows war, something we believe would make him reluctant to start one. He's also a fierce defender of civil liberties. As a survivor of torture, he has stood resolutely against it.

What part of "bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran" don't they understand?  Sigh!

Re: DMR Endorses Clinton, McCain

The Boston Globe endorsed McCain and Obama.  Apparently editorial boards are still nostalgic for the old McCain.

I'm not going to lie.  I knew it was going to be a rush to.  But I figure more of the discussion should come from bloggers.

Re: DMR Endorses Clinton, McCain

What they understand, Steve, is sooner or later, somebody's going to have to.

Our intelligence is wrong, according to Israel, who I trust more. Iran is building a nuclear weapon. They have a nuclear program that will produce nuclear waste Hezbollah can use in a dirty bomb.

Iran is a serious regional and global threat. Buying them off with entry into the WTO (which is moronic in and of itself) will not work.

Wait, wait, wait.  Does your first sentence mean anything more than what you say in the second sentence?

Re: DMR Endorses Clinton, McCain

Meaning not black enough for you?  Amazing how that same argument was so offensive when used against Obama, but not so much when we're talking about anyone who supports Clinton. I take the view that it's dumb and offensive no matter the application.

Wonderful news for Hillary!!!!  She very much deserved this recognition, especially after the field day the MSM has been having at her expense.

Might I be so vulgar as to suggest that Chris Matthews can go straight to hell!

You're right as usual, rssrai. We all know that women are too stupid to support a candidate for any other reason other gender.  Damn them, we ought to take back their right to vote.  You really are incredible. I find it very sad that you think this way.

Re: DMR Endorses Clinton, McCain

Great news. So much for the wheels coming off the Clinton bandwagon. Another day, another endorsement for Hillary Clinton.

Re: DMR Endorses Clinton, McCain

Definetly a big endorsement for Clinton. Quite frankly I'm surprised as a Hillary supporter that she got it. This paper endorsed Bradly over Gore. I thought it would go to Edwards again, or Obama or possibly even Biden. Reading their endorsement it was clear experience and a proven ability to get things done were critical factors that had them choose her over Obama in particular. It's good for her, and it's going to be a battle to the end. It's going to be a threeway fight to the finish.

A Good Day For Hillary

Congratulations to Hillary (and her supporters) for getting this endorsement. Certainly reason for some celebration.

Prior to this afternoon, I assuredly did not expect this development.

Then I was informed of the composition and political leanings of the editorial board (by Desmoinesdem), then I read the incredibly detailed article in today's NYT about the particularly intense wining and dining that Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Wesley Clark and many other Clinton surrogates brought to bear on the members of the board. Three of the members of the editorial board even got their pictures on the front page of the NYT as important people (not bad if you are in the newspaper biz.)  They repeatedly denied that they were star struck with all the attention. Hmmmm...okay...do you have a pulse?

My sense is that the members of the editorial board were both befriended and impressed. And they are now rooting for Hillary to win Iowa. Put all the factors together, and it makes sense that this group of individuals, holding those particular political views, exposed to that kind of lobbying effort would endorse the candidacy of Hillary Clinton.

(FWIW, I do not believe that Biden, without any star power lobbyists to bring to bear, realistically had a chance with this group of individuals. I am going to guess that Biden didn't even try to wine them, dine them, leave messages on their machines, or try to befriend them with hours of conversation. Might not have worked, but undoubtedly, Biden should have at least tried it.)

One downside for Hillary...the endorsement of the largest newspaper in the state of Iowa assuredly raises expectations of a victory for Hillary in Iowa, just as it would have had Obama or Edwards received it.

This surprised me

It really did.  I thought Edwards or Obama.  I thought Obama may have been even pulling into contention for it.  I didn't think Clinton has a chance to get it.

Leadership and Experience seems to be key

It seems that is why Clinton got the endorsement.

A paper in middle America looks at the ability to lead from day one and picks Clinton.   That isn't good news for Obama.  The Register played right to Clinton's theme almost perfect.

I think when Americans stream to the polls, especially on Feb 5, they are going to be thinking the same thing.
