Congratulations, Sen Obama

Today, you have broken quite a few barriers in becoming the first African American to be the nominee of a major party for President of the United States.

In the coming few weeks and months, you will have the opportunity to make your case against Sen. John McCain, and to unify your party behind you. I expect that many questions will be asked, and answered during that process.

But tonite is not a time for asking questions. Tonite is a time for offering congratulations !!

And yes, tonite is a time for wishing you well !!

Re: Too bad only the delegates want him

Only the majority of delegates.
And 32 states, plus DC.
And more than 17 million voters.

But aside from that, no, he's not that popular.

I already recced

but you have class, I am looking forwards to your next global issues (for lack of a better term) piece.

Re: I already recced

Thank you.  And you aint so bad yourself, Doc

My next piece is on a topic of great concern to me, but will probably bore everyone else ...

the presence of BPA (bisphenol A) in baby bottles, and how babies are dying as a result.  Or rather, how Mommies are being fearmongered as a result of it.

by SevenStrings 2008-06-03 01:28PM | 0 recs
Great diary, SS.

I know how hard it is, because I went through it with Edwards.  You were a great advocate for your candidate.

by TomP 2008-06-03 01:31PM | 0 recs
Re: Great diary, SS.

Oh, I dont think it is THAT hard =)

For me, Gore v Bush was hard.  1994 was hard.  1984 was hard (this was elections in India).  2002 was hard.

2008 is not hard !!

by SevenStrings 2008-06-03 01:34PM | 0 recs
Very nice topic

I'm looking forwards to it already.

Bisphenol A does have nasty side effects but dose/exposure is important to consider.

by Student Guy 2008-06-03 01:35PM | 0 recs
Can you tell me more...

I am unable to get any concrete informationo n this.

They say it mimics estrogen, and can kill cells.  But I have not seen any conclusive evidence on that (except for lab tests done on a petri dish at veryy high doses)

Do you know of a good place to get that information.

I was approaching it from the other side ~ how much BPA must be present in the bottle, and at what rate can it leach into the baby etc.

by SevenStrings 2008-06-03 01:38PM | 0 recs
Yeah it is only in the Ames style test

that it shows toxicity, and I am fairly certain that it is heat exposure of the bottle that causes it to leak out.

If you have access to PubMed/Ovid that is a very good place to do research, otherwise Google Scholar isn't bad (you don't want to use regular google as there will be a lot of crap floating around about this).  If you are at all close to academia you will have access to Pubmed/Ovid.

Harder for you to access likely would be a Journal for Pediatrics (where this would likely be in), Jeter is a doc and would likely know better for sources than myself, SpacemanSpiff is in between med school and residency so he would be a good source to ask for better advise too.

by Student Guy 2008-06-03 02:09PM | 0 recs
Re: Yeah it is only in the Ames style test

I do have access to all journals, and all databases (one of my old schools has been very generous to me=).  And I also have access to my wife, who is a genius in digging out informatin like that (she is trained to do that =).

But, I have not found any credible source of information that says that BPA is a cause for concern.  Everyone says that it could be a cause for concern, but..it appears to me at least.. noone has actually gone back and checked!

And yes, heat exposure is the only way for the BPA to leach out.  I understand that part very well (I have studied similar problems), and the relationship between leaching rates and temperature is not a simple one.  And so, I can safely say that leaching of BPA from the bottle is not a concern ~ provided you dont pour boiling hot water into it.

But then, where is all the BPA coming from.  Younger children tend to have more BPA than older adults.

So, very many questions, and not enough answers...

by SevenStrings 2008-06-03 02:17PM | 0 recs
Indeed

You sound like you have a firm grasp of this issue.

Here are some more journals to look into since you have access to them:

Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology.
Endocrine (related ones as well).
Maybe some Oncology ones (since the main threat is that prolonged low doses increase the chances of cancer in rats).

by Student Guy 2008-06-03 02:23PM | 0 recs
It doesn't pay to freak out about it.

Heat does seem to be the thing that causes it to leach out of plastic, so our household has stopped using plastic dishes in the microwave just to be on the safe side... but otherwise I don't think your typical adult needs to worry about their exposure.  It does leak slowly over time, so bottled water that has sat around a long time might also be a source, but I certainly wouldn't worry about leftovers you keep in a plastic container in the fridge for a few days.

I don't know if it is all hype or not.  We've made a few simple changes in our life just to feel better about it, but we haven't freaked out and thrown a way our tupperware.

by protothad 2008-06-03 03:08PM | 0 recs
Re: It doesn't pay to freak out about it.

The plastic dishes you typically use in a microwave do not contain any BPA (they do have other stuff though, and that may be just as nasty).

Bottled water sitting at room temperature, or even in the Sun will not collect any BPA... even after 10 years.

Re: Congratulations, Sen Obama

yeah he deserves to be congratulated , he ran a solid campaign .

He was in it to win it.

I have very little to complain about with the way he ran his campaign .

If he continues to articulate common sense position on Iraq and Iran , he would get my vote .( with or without Clinton ).

Re: Congratulations, Sen Obama

Mojoed!

Seriously, I had to rub my eyes but if I read that right I take back our exchange earlier.

Either you didn't mean it, or whatever.

Im a democrat and unlike Republicans we do give the benefit of the doubt for better or worse.

And god Lori, you just gave me the "Obama Tingles" with this one line:

"If he continues to articulate common sense position on Iraq and Iran "

That is to imply that you like what you hear and want it to go further.

Thats AWESOME,  you can never have a President that is too Logical and correct on Foreign policy.

I know I posted this ten times today, but once more to keep in this discussion:

Congrats to Senator Clinton, too

from an Obama supporter.

She did run one hell of a campaign, especially after she retooled in March.  There's no doubt, too, that she won a lot of contests and a lot of votes.

In my entire lifetime, I've seen the nominating go in just one direction after the voting starts... Dean imploded immediately.  For all of Bill's Comeback kid narrative - let's face it, he basically had a poor showing in a contest nobody contested (due to Harkin) then came back to remain relevant in the 2nd... and the rest was history.

Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, did something quite extraordinary by not just staying in the race, but winning races well towards the end.

It was an amazing performance.

I'm ready to remember the days of late 2007 - when I was giddy at the embarrassment of riches we all thought we had heading into the primary season.   As late as December of 2007 - there were legitimately five candidates I considered backing.

We're fortunate to have a lot of very good and very strong leaders in our party.

It's time to put an end to the horrors of the modern GOP - and this fall, I have no doubt that we'll all do it, together.

by zonk 2008-06-03 01:53PM | 0 recs
Re: Congrats to Senator Clinton, too

That is funny.

You and I have travelled very different paths then.  In late 2007, I did not like any of the 3 viable candidates.  I did not feel like we had an abandonment of riches =)

I moved to support Sen. Clinton when she stopped being the anointed one, and became a progressive.  She never moved far enough on the one issue I care for (Darfur), but...

Rec'd.

After all is said and done, this primary season will be regarded as having been good for the party. I would not have admitted such a month or so ago, and it may take a month or so before Sen. Clinton's supports feel likewise.

Let it begin.

We're gonna do it,  do you guys think for ONE second that the repub blogs had conversations like these the day Romney conceded?
Of course not, its funny how WE'RE called the fracticious party.

Re: Congratulations, Sen Obama

Credit for the CORRECT framing.

John McCain is America's enemy.

GWB is a tyrant and has made our country poorer and less safe and likely not the infallible superpower of the world.

McCain is an eager sequel to GWB.

They are the enemies of Freedom, Truth, Life and Love.

Magnanimity is a great tongue-twister

for drinking games.

Five times fast, with a series of beers (or worse) and it gets surprisingly hard...

Toy Boat and Unique New York are also pretty tough.

And if you can do all those by midnight, there is always Aluminum Linoleum to put the starch back into your lips...

Phantom Recced, 7Strings!

Gracious and well said.

I want to add my piece to this.  I have enjoyed getting to know so many of you here, and to have folks like linfar show me that even the strongest disagreement does not an enemy make.

MyDD has become my favorite place to be.  As I've said, it is not in my nature to talk only to those with whom I agree on every thing, and MyDD has been a great place to have my conceptions tested.

I'm not going to leave after tonight, but as I've said before I plan to spend more time seeing how I can open a broader conversation outside of Party Lines once the primaries are decided.  It will not surprise me if I very soon look back to the warm sunny days of debating with FleaFlicker here, once the hardcore GOP folks get their claws on me... ;~)

Congratulations to everyone for involving yourselves in the American process.  As I've explained (often fruitlessly) to my Canadian friends: "America may be a bit messy, but it's the best game on earth!"

-cheers!

Re: Congratulations, Sen Obama

i'll say it. He ran a great campaign, undercut the greatest Democratic political force in recent history, and while I may have disagreed with his tactics of playing the race card in a very Chicago-esque styled manner and smearing the Clintons thru surrogates and preachers, I sadly accept his nomination. because I am an ultra partisan, he will have my almost unwavering support, and I will videotape my voting for him in November to prove it. I say we all do that, it would make for good YouTube material
