Meet Heath Shuler - Video Interview

Heath Shuler was kind enough to sit down for few minutes before a "meet-the-candidates" forum and answer some questions. With Charles Taylor outspending Shuler 4-1 on media buys, spending $300,000 last week alone, Scrutiny Hooligans are doing our small part in moving the media wars towards parity.

Great interview! Heath is getting more comfortable stating his positions. He just needs to keep pushing hard to the finish line.

Totally impressed. Both with Shuler -- who looks to be hitting a nice stride in this campaigning thing -- and the finesse of the interviewer. :)

Went to Look at His Website

Why doesn't he state his party affiliation on the front page? It's not even in his bio that I can see.

Looks like he's trying to run away from his political identity. Hardly commendable.

Sometimes you just have to engage your brain. He's running in a district that elects Republicans. Heath has to get enough Republicans to either stay home or vote for him to win. Do you think plastering the word DEMOCRAT all over his web site will accomplish that?

Thank goodness Heath and his team are engaging their brains and realize what it takes to win in their district.

Would you prefer

Southern white voters be photographed surrounding him holding signs SHULER -- REPUBLICAN?

Then he could issue a similar-to-Steele mealy-mouthed explanation, "Oh, they're Republicans who support my candidacy."

C'mon, hiding you party affiliation isn't brainy. It's just plain cowardly.

[BTW Michael Steele doesn't announce he's a Republican either on his website front page or in his bio, either. But he does proudly declare that

President George W. Bush appointed Mr. Steele to serve a term on the Board of Visitors of the United States Naval Academy.

In different districts, Democrats will run in different ways. Shuler is touting health care for every American, workers' rights, fully funded public education, and the need for rapid reaction to the threat of global warming.

If Shuler wanted to run the same losing campaign we've seen around here for the last 16 years, he could tack left, win Buncombe County, and lose the election.

Shuler's a Democrat. On the ballot - Democrat. On the stump with John Edwards - Democrat. Call it cowardly if you'd like. On November 7th, I'll call it winning.

And hope if that's the case he's the kind of office holder that makes future Democrat candidates unashamed to proudly wear the Party Label.

It's time to de-Rove the Democrats. He's been far too successful in demonifying people to the left of Attila the Hun.

Yeah, I noticed that a while ago - last time I checked, I couldn't find anything on his site identifying himself as a Dem. He doesn't need to plaster it all over the place, but at least be proud of your party.
