She Can't Even Name a Major Publication

Are we sure this isn't a Tina Fey sketch? I'm not convinced.

Unbelievable. It just gets worse.

Couric: And when it comes to establishing your world view, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this to stay informed and to understand the world?

Palin: I've read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media.

Oh God.

Couric: What, specifically?

Palin: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years.

Many publications have their names actually written in large letters on the front! In fact, some are quite popular...like Time, Newsweek, USA Today to name a very few...and she only needed to name a couple of them to at least seem like she was in touch with current events.

She couldn't. And in fact, if we are to take her at her word, she basically just reads whatever is plopped down in front of her without taking note of the source...with simply a general appreciation for the press and media.

Couric: Can you name a few?

Palin: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news, too. Alaska isn't a foreign country, where it's kind of suggested, "wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?" Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America.

Either she really has not kept up with any major publication as the governor of Alaska, or she doesn't have the basic political skills to wing a gimme question like this.

Stunning either way.

Re: She Can't Even Name a Major Publication

Holy crap.  Is that even possible?  I mean...she didn't even have to be truthful!  And the best part is, there would be no way for anyone to prove she was lying!  She could have just said, "Oh yeah, I try to read the Washington Times as much as possible" and no one would be the wiser.  I mean...she really couldn't even NAME a magazine!  Hell, she could have made up a fake Alaska newspaper and no one would ever fact check it!  She could have said "Oh yeah, I read the Juneau Post all the time" and then if that's not the correct name, she could always just say she forgot the whole name.  Wow.  I think she might actually just be terribly ignorant.

Re: She Can't Even Name a Major Publication

The only magazine she could think of was Seventeen Magazine, but she was at least smart enough to know she couldn't use that one.

An insult to all of us..

Its an insult to all Americans who try to keep up on current events for McCain to pick a person who doesn't even read the news.

He really should be ashamed of himself. I hope he is defeated and the GOP learns a lesson from it. I'm not holding my breath, though. Obama could lose, just because of racism.

Never underestimate the determination of a cornered animal to fight. The GOP is fighting for their very survival.

Their reality distortion field is collapsing and the chances of ugly truths coming out in any non-GOP administration about the mismanagement of these last eight years is very high.

So - they are desperate. People who have done what they have done must be very desperate.

That makes the outcome of this race very unpredictable.

I am sure they will be doing everything they possibly can to disenfranchise as many voters as possible.

The funny thing is that Nancy's schtick has been to declare her a "genius" because she read the newspaper at some really non-precocious age, like 10.

Sexism, as the interview was clearly shot by a sexist male cameraperson who skewed the framing of the issue to belittle a Genius Woman Politician!

"her" 10th year??? Your comment is obviously designed to slight the GOVERNER on gender!

Don't be cocky

She could have a good debate Thursday night. She will come out swinging against Biden, with a couple of "oh, gee in Alaska we know what it is like to make ends meet by shooting moose" comments and the next thing you know the press will be calling her down to earth and in touch with every day Americans.

by nascardem 2008-09-30 06:03PM | 0 recs
Re: Don't be cocky

Let her. Biden will play either the stoic statesman, hurt puppy or both. She will not come across well if she comes across as mean and shallow. God help me, but "stuck-up bitch" is still in the public psyche just as much as the "angry black man" stereotype.

She had a very good powder puff interview with Hugh Hewitt today, where she played the "I'm just a regular gal," card and pulled at the heart strings...

McCain tried to pull that shit, too... expect a lot of it at the debate...

She's going to do better than we all think... and with her expectations so low, it's going to hurt us...

Look, she got FED that shit. My God, that interview was absurd. About as factual and hard hitting as a Teen Beat expose.

"Does it really stay dark in Alaska for a whole month?"
"Do you like wearing glasses, or would you like to get contacts someday?"
"Your husband is really athletic. How cool is it to be married to him?"
"What is it like to be so awesome?"

This is really bizarre

She did win a governership and must have been ok with the media in that race.  She also reportedly performed fine in those debates.  I can see why she would completely bomb foreign policy or Supreme Court questions, since she's clearly very narrow-minded and provincial and never thought much about the world beyond Alaska, but there's no reasons she shouldn't be able to answer this softball question.

As far as I am concerned we are still the greatest country and democracy in the world , lets not forget that..

We might have problems with the current leadership but that doesn't mean the country is in decline .

I suspect if Obama gets elected , you wouldn't think the country is in " decline " or an " empire "..

I wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that the country is in decline .

When you elect a chief executive who's the laughing stock of the free world -
When your electoral results are headlined "How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB" -
When the richest country in the world is over 10 trillion dollars in debt and growing -
When a 5 year war with one rogue middle eastern country saps the military and economic might of the most powerful country on earth -
When this beacon of free enterprise lurches towards state ownership and protection of its businesses and shows signs of losing its AAA credit rating -

You MIGHT say we are in a decline.

Re: She Can't Even Name a Major Publication

Then you need to travel outside once in a while. Sure, we are still #1 in terms of being a world power and there are still many third world people who want to come here. But that doesn't mean we are not in a decline. There is a lot less enthusiasm in coming to the US compared to the 80s and 90s. I notice a decrease in the quality of immigration too.

The US dollar is at its most affordable, yet I did not see many Europeans trying to take advatnage of that low dollar to take some dirt cheap vacaations in the US in the last couple of years.

i think folks are missing a major point

i don't think she failed to name a publication because of being stupid.  not at all.

remember, the source of her popularity is "she is just like us" but the people who are voting for her for that reason don't read.

There was NO publication she could have named that would be acceptable to them.

If she mentioned reading any publications more substantial than Us or People she would no longer be "just like them" -- she might even be (gasp!) elitist.

and obviously she could not claim she gets her information from Us and People.

she was stuck.  that's why she said nothing.

Seriously, with her worldview, what *could* she

read?

Smithsonian?  No, all that history stuff is just silly.

The Economist?  Too liberal.

Harvard Review?  Obviously not, or she'd know a Supreme Court case or two.

Wall Street Journal?  I suppose she could, but since even they can't support McCain I guess they're off the list. (Frankly, I can't picture her reading through WSJ anyway.)

Need to ask those who have been in her office what publications they have seen laying around.  So far the only thing I've seen in pictures is a copy of  John Birch newsletter.

Can't name, or won't name?

The way the question was framed, clearly Couric wanted her to name not just any publications Palin reads, but the ones that inform her worldview. Perhaps the publications she reads that inform her worldview are ones she would not care to name.

Proceedings of the Alaska Independence Party
Abortion Clinic Bomber's Quarterly
Fascism Today
Aerial Hunter

So she chose to be vague.

Granted, this is the wonder bread of newspapers, but everybody knows it.

Beyond that, Newsweek and Time should be pretty obvious.

I think this is a strategy

I truly think that this is all part of a larger strategy of the McCain/Palin team to demonize the media, neutralize its influence and fan the flames of the culture wars.

The meme of in-the-tank, bias, gotcha journalism etc IS a strategy. It is everywhere... and spreading. Look around.

Today, the lead meme among conservatives is that Gwen Ifill is unfit to moderate the VP debate because she is writing a book "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama". She is being painted as hopelessly biased towards Obama and unable to be an objective journalist. Any tough questions which Ifill may ask Palin during the debate are being preemptively neutralized by this meme. I'm not going to link to all the buzz surrounding this story, simply google it and you'll see what I mean.

It is all part of a larger story to paint the media as biased, absurd, condescending and in-the-tank for Obama.

Yes, to liberal Democrats, Palin's answer here is scary, absurd, incurious, astonishing... but put your ear to the ground... that is not the way this is playing everywhere. I've read comments on conservative boards where Couric is the one who is condescending in asking the question. We live in a country where there are huge MOVEMENTS to boycott the liberal media.

Palin's supporters are not impressed by someone who reads the NYTimes, The Economist, The New Yorker or who watches PBS... in fact, the exact opposite is true. They see value in pushing back against the media... and the elite, intellectual world of DC, NYC and LA etc.

Are we feeding the beast here by making liberal Democrats look like gloating know-it-alls who take great glee in belittling and insulting Palin?

Take a step back and look at the big picture of what the opponents' strategy is here. I think it is becoming glaringly obvious.

by twinmom 2008-10-01 08:10AM | 0 recs
Re: I think this is a strategy

Nah....

She is sympathetic to the same people you are describing, HER core, and people dumb enough to indentify with her.

Those people are not voting for a smartpants black guy anyway (of course, they are probably phrasing it in different language.)

And, as far as them running a campaign against Gwen, it's for the same audience.

They are preaching to the choir.

EVEN IF you think Gwen is pro-Obama (and these folks will, cause, here's a hint..Shes black! and to those people, that's enough....)So what?

Is Putin going to be Pro Palin?

Again, it's the KIDS GLOVES idea about their fragile flower.

Twinmom, Isn't she A PITBULL IN LIPSTICK

If she can't handle Gwen Ifill, what about Putin?
