OR-Sen: UPDATED MERKLEY WINS!

Hi there MYDD readers! I'm here at Merkley Headquarters and I just wanted to give you an update on the state of the Oregon Senate race. We are feeling very good about the election right now, and I want to tell you why. UPDATE: Oregonian calls it for Merkley http://www.oregonlive.com/special/index.ssf/2008/11/senate.html Follow me below the fold....

Full disclosure, I am the netroots director for OR-Sen candidate Jeff Merkley

As of right now, the race is neck-and-neck.  But, there are 150,000 ballots left to be counted in Multnomah County and 90,000 left to be counted in Lane county. In case anyone isn't familiar with Oregon, Multnomah County is the Portland Metro area and Lane County is the Eugene area where University of Oregon is located. Right now in Multnomah County, Merkley is garnering 66% of the vote while Smith is only garnering 29% of the vote. In Lane County, Merkley is garnering 58% of the vote to Smith's 38%.

Today is going to be a long day! In Multnomah County, they are processing around 6,000 ballots an hour. So, they have a long ways to go. Almost all of the remaining counties have already been counted which leaves the bulk of the ballots that need to be counted in the Democratic strongholds of Portland and Eugene. And, every time new returns come in, we are increasing our vote total and widening our lead in Multnomah and Lane Counties.

Translation: we are incredibly optimistic here at Merkley Headquarters that once the votes come in, we will have a new Senator here in Oregon.

We're all still working away here at Merkley HQ. Some of us are in our pajamas, some of us haven't slept at all and it does not matter! We're gonna keep working until all the ballots are in! We'll continue to keep you all posted as best as we can throughout the day.

Why does it take so long to count votes in Oregon?

by reggie44pride 2008-11-05 01:13PM | 0 recs
Chinese Water Torture

Not that I'm taking up for Smith, but with a mail-in ballot only system like Orgeon's, it's gotta suck big time knowing you're up with Democratic counties and precincts left to report.

That's like a slow execution!

Re: OR-Sen: Merkley Campaign Feeling Good!

A ton of ballots came in to Multnomah County yesterday and the process takes longer because they have to verify every single signature on the ballot envelope.

Re: OR-Sen: Merkley Campaign Feeling Good!
Give our best wishes to all the people working so hard to get a great candidate like Jeff elected.
You guys rock and I'm so grateful for all your hard work and the work of all the campaign volunteers and paid staff that made all this possible!
We'll be waiting to hear the good news!!

Re: OR-Sen: Merkley Campaign Feeling Good!

We had a very hardworking staff, but in particular, we had AMAZING vols who came in even when they were sick to make phonecalls. Jeff said awhile back that the vols for the campaign were the heart and soul of the campaign.

Smith lost bigtime

It was fairly obvious from the numbers in all counties.  You can't run five points behind George Bush 2004 and carry Oregon.  Frankly, I'm a bit miffed that the media couldn't find even the most rudimentary statistician to figure this one out.

This race should have been called last night.

Re: OR-Sen: Merkley Campaign Feeling Good!

Is there any feeling in OR that the vote by mail system just takes too long to count?  Especially in the big urban areas it seems like there would be faster methods.  I know I appreciate the fact that our votes are pretty much all counted by midnight on election day.

What really drove the all-mail-in approach, anyway?

Regardless, good luck.  I see Jeff is up by 2,500 now, with most outstanding ballots in strongly Democratic areas.  I'm pretty confident you'll pull it out.

Re: OR-Sen:

Merkey has made up 8k today and is now up 2,500 as it went form 70% reporting to 79% reporting.  He is going to win by at least 15k.

But what the fuck went on.  How could Stevens be winning i mean he was convicted on 7 counts two weeks ago.  i just dont get that.

Awesome!  Congrats!  I wish I could buy you a round after this thing's over (maybe you could set up a Beer Fund link?).

Now to hope that Franken's recount goes well...

Re: OR-Sen: UPDATED MERKLEY WINS!

Glad to see another enemy of the title and payday loan sharks in a position of power.  I would like Sen.-elect Merkeley to write national legislation putting them out of business.

On a similar note, the sharks' best friend in the Georgia House, Republican Steve "Thunder" Tumlin was defeated by progressive Democrat Pat Dooley.  The real reason I'm writing about it???

It's my state House district we're talking about, and it went from red to blue!!!!!!!

Speaking of Georgia politics, (talk about stream of consciousness), I second fransis' appeal for Jim Martin.  This race is now the central front in the war against the neo-cons.

In any case, great job, Sarah Lane!  Be proud!
