OR-Sen: Longshore Workers Say NO WAY to Gordon Smith

In the first debate between Republican Gordon Smith and Oregon's House Speaker Jeff Merkley, Smith touted his work with Oregon's Longshore workers. Here's what Smith had to say:
And I have been a voice for rural Oregon. You see what Pendleton wheat farmers need is Portland long shore man. I bridged that gap. Jeff Merkley makes it much deeper.
Oregon's Longshore workers are not having it. More below the fold....
Full disclosure, I am the netroots director for OR-Sen candidate Jeff Merkley
Appalled at the attempts by Gordon Smith to mislead people into believing that the Longshore Workers support him for Senate, they put a video together setting the record straight. The video really speaks for itself, take a minute to watch it.
Oregon's Longshore workers were the first union to endorse Jeff Merkley for Senate. Here's what they had to say:
"The ILWU is committed to advancing the political and economic interests of workers in the United States and throughout the world," ILWU Secretary-Treasurer William Adams said in a letter to Jeff. "We look forward to working with you to achieve our mutual goals."
Republican Gordon Smith is no friend to organized labor. Smith was instrumental in blocking the Employee Free Choice Act back in 2007. Smith voted against raising the minimum wage six times. Smith is an ardent free-trader and recently said in response to Merkley's calls for current trade deals like NAFTA and CAFTA to be reformed, "And this guy is pointing a dagger right at the heart of all of these tens-of-thousands of jobs. That dagger comes in the form of revised or revoked trade agreements." If that wasn't bad enough, Gordon Smith attached the Repatriation Amendment to the JOBS Act which resulted in billions in giveaways to big corp, in particular big pharma. Instead of investing in jobs, Smith would rather invest in CEO's.
Jeff Merkley has been a strong supporter of organized labor. As Oregon's House Speaker, Jeff pushed through the card check, created jobs by passing green energy tax credits that encouraged companies to set up shop in Oregon and enabled workers to use their sick leave as family leave if need be. Merkley is a staunch supporter of the Employee Free Choice Act and FAIR TRADE deals with enforceable environmental and labor regulations. Merkley will always put working families before the powerful special interests, which is the exact opposite of Republican Gordon Smith.
