Saxby Chambliss Only Ahead 2 Points In New Georgia Senate Poll

A new Georgia poll shows that incumbent GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss could be vulnerable if former Democratic Gov. Roy Barnes should enter the race for the Senate seat. Chambliss only polled 2 points ahead of Barnes in the new InsiderAdvantage poll.

Saxby Chambliss  42%
Roy Barnes          40%

DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones who does not have as much name recognition statewide as Barnes was able to keep Chambliss under 50% in polling as well.

Saxby Chambliss   48%
Vernon Jones        31%

This is a surprising poll. That has generally been considered a safe GOP seat.

Roy Barnes in a perfecty storm can win that race, especially if Saxby votes for the immigration bill.

I would like to see more polling on this but if this is anywhere near correct and two candidates have him under 50% that could be a good pickup opportunity. The race against Max Cleland was one of the dirtiest Senate races in history, it would be wonderful to regain that seat.

Points In New Georgia Senate Poll

I think Edwards should press Barnes to enter this race, and Easley to enter the race in North Carolina.  They are both strong supporters of his.  Of course, Barnes was ousted in the same year as Cleland in an equally unexpected upset.  I doubt he has a taste for it.
