Edwards And Clark Still In Debt From 2004 Race

An AP story this morning that Wesley Clark and John Edwards are still in debt from their 2004 presidential runs. Debts are still owed to many small vendors.

Re: Edwards And Clark Still In Debt From 2004 Race

I guess the analysis would be that some of the small vendors from 2004 are not happy they still have not been paid with the 2008 races getting started. As I understand it FEC rules do not require that past campaign finances be settled before starting a new one.

According to the Federal Election Commission , candidates are not obligated to pay off debts from a past presidential campaign before starting a new one.

Federal law does prohibit them from rolling whatever is left in their 2004 accounts into a 2008 campaign until outstanding bills are paid.

It is not uncommon for losing political campaigns to delay paying their bills or sometimes default on payments entirely. But the notion that Edwards and Clark may run again has angered some of their unpaid 2004 vendors, many of whom run relatively small operations with tight cash flow.

Then they can either find new vendors or pay off their debts.

Re: Edwards And Clark Still In Debt From 2004 Race

The article seems to indicate that they both have plenty of COH to pay it off.  So the only story here is that certain vendors are irritated because they are strapped for cash.  This seems to be a rather peripheral issue and I'm not sure I really care.  That was my conclusion after reading the article - I was wondering if I was missing something.

The original AP article cited the same explanation from both camps ... that they are waiting on the conclusion of an FEC audit before retiring those debts, and states that an FEC audit can take several years to complete. Why is that ... they do it on a time available basis or what?

Who cares,I would support either candidate over Hillary Clinton anyway.

point.

This is interesting only because it brings up two points.  One, why haven't they paid it!  Everyone immediately questions the candidates.  Two, there is an audit to see what was provided, who provided it, what was paid, etc.  That makes on wonder if SOME of the "debt" might not exist.

In the end, a great example of a tempest in a tea cup, eh?
