Nurses Obtain TRO against Andy Stern

On the heels of a series of incidents in California where female nurses have been followed and harassed by mostly male SEIU staffers, and in the wake of SEIU's violent attack on the peaceful Labor Notes conference, a California Superior Court has issued a temporary restraining order against Andy Stern, President of SEIU, and his staff, ordering them to stay away from nurses with the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee.

Stern will appear in court on May 1st for a hearing on whether to issue a permanent restraining order.SEIU claims its actions are in retaliation for a disputed election in Ohio where Catholic Healthcare Partners filed for an election to choose SEIU as their company union.

SEIU's recent actions makes clear why RNs around the country do not have a good opinion of their organization.

Re: Nurses Obtain TRO against Andy Stern

this is amazing!! Thanks. Andy Stern always gets such good writeups in the press. Of course, that isn't something to be proud of these days.

Re: Nurses Obtain TRO against Andy Stern

It's comforting to know that society, in the form of this judge issuing this temporary restraining order, is declaring that such violence and intimidation is totally unacceptable!

Thanks to CNA for continuing to stick up for nurses!

Re: Nurses Obtain TRO against Andy Stern

Just a reminder that a temporary restraining order is issued only until the complete FACTS of a case can be discovered.  It's a precautionary measure, not an indictment.

I truly doubt Andy Stern or the leadership of SEIU is aware of let alone controls the actions of everyone who wears a purple tee shirt.  No telling yet exactly who these California "stalkers" are or if these incidents really happened as described.

Judging from the the wildly different stories coming out of the Labor Notes incident (was it four cops or forty? 200 hundred members or 800? 3 buses or 7?  who was hitting whom? ) it's impossible to determine who's serving up the hyperbole.  The most unimpeachable source, the police themselves, suggests much of this is being blown way out of proportion.

That said, it's ridiculous to be calling for the resignation or even the public trashing of as successful a labor leader as Andy Stern.  Let the court do it's work.

Re: public trashing of successful labor leader...

I would submit to you that the corporate media has branded Andy Stern as a "successful leader." Is that really your opinion of him too, as a self described 'progressive democrat'?

In my opinion he doesn't qualify as a "successful labor leader." (a leader in paternalistic, narcissistic, self-promotion, perhaps?) I remain suspect of MM's endorsement of Andy Stern as a "labor leader," but I understand it; he apparently supports corporate capitalism's subjugation of the workforce, in order to control the ability to maximize profit.

Workers within his union are beginning to wake up to the fact that while he's wheeling and dealing in the boss's office, their interests are being marginalized and subordinated to the corporate bottom line.

The workers don't receive a fair share of the wealth they create with their labor, and their rights have been encumbered and restrained, by Andy's top down, autocratic, management style.

In response to your "unimpeachable" source comment, and your question regarding whether or not "these incidents really happened", statements and declarations are being collected from the Registered Nurses upon whom these attacks, affronts, and stalking incidents were perpetrated. We can all appreciate the need for due diligence in bringing the charges forward.

Registered Nurses are highly educated, and posess substantial scientific knowledge and technical skills. RNs record facts and observations on a daily basis that can have life or death implications; doctors rely on their ability to communicate critical information when prescribing or changing the course of a patient's medical treatment. RNs are accountable for thoroughness, completeness, timely communication, and documentation of information, by virtue of their license.

I know many of the victims personally, and they are credible. The TRO wasn't issued by the judge on a whim!
