El Latino Endorses Obama

So much for Obama's problem with Latinos.  According to the Washington Times, El Latino, Iowa's largest Spanish language paper has endorsed Barack Obama for President:

Sen. Barack Obama is the candidate of "hope and the future," the Iowa weekly Spanish-language newspaper editorialized today.

El Latino, with 15,000 Iowa readers, endorsed Obama under the headline: "To Elect Barack Obama is to Elect a Better Future for Everyone."

The newspaper said Obama "understands" the Latino community and the issues affecting Hispanic families such as immigration, the war and small business development.

El Latino added a line central to Obama's campaign theme that Sen. Hillary Clinton won't be able to forge partnerships needed to get things done. "No other presidential candidate, particularly divisive candidates, can unite Congress and secure the votes to finally pass comprehensive immigration reform."

"We ask with all our heart that all members of the Latino community in Iowa attend that caucus to vote for Barack Obama, January 3 at 6:30 p.m."

Re: El Latino Endorses Obama

Thats good news. I doubt too many latinos will show up to caucus (they hardly even show up to vote) but its great to hear.

I am a "latino".

Re: El Latino Endorses Obama

From what I've seen in Los Angeles, the Hispanic community is one of the easiest ethnic communities to reach and mobilize because radio has such a focussed audience.  The Obama campaign has made an outreach to the Latino community and he is endorsed by Perla A., the Vice-President of Siouxland Unidad Latina, the area's oldest and largest Latino organization, as well as City Councilmember Sara Monroy Huddleston, one of four Latino elected officials in Iowa.  This may be one of the many surprise groups Obama will turn out who have been ignored by polling.

many small towns in Iowa

have significant Latino populations. Attendance at small-town caucuses is not usually large, so even getting a dozen people to show up might be enough to  get Obama a delegate or two from the precinct.

This is a good get for Obama and has to be disappointing for Richardson.

Re: El Latino Endorses Obama
Latinos will caucus and vote for Obama. He is not afraid to publicly support and stand for Latinos.
On the other hand, Hillary has shown that she can't support Latinos because that will cost her some votes! Cheap politics!

Re: El Latino Endorses Obama

Crackijones is showing off some skills!!! I like that. I think the Obama's problem with Latino voters is greatly exaggerated. Hillary is leading now because of name recognition but she will lose the lead once latino voters become acquainted to Obama's vision.

Re: El Latino Endorses Obama

Hm, I was unaware Obama had a perceived "problem" with Latinos.

Nice endorsement, I suppose. I'm wondering why Richardson didn't push for and manage to get this endorsement?

Re: El Latino Endorses Obama

We were all pretty unaware until blogfather Jerome Armstrong diaried about it yesterday. The crux is this: latinos are racist so democrats ought not nominate Obama as he would leave hispanic/latino votes on the table. This follows on other equally strong diaries presenting sundry reasons to avoid Obama like the plague. Of course this is all rather nonsensical but thats the way the cookie crumbles in the progressive blogosphere these days (see recommended diaries on mydd for more).

And as expected, Jerome makes no appearance here to talk about what this means in relation to his diary.

in fairness to Jerome

one newspaper's editorial board does not necessarily reflect widespread opinion within a large population.

Re: El Latino Endorses Obama

Latinos are the future and Obama is the candidate of the future.
