Joe Lieberman has triggered a war of words over Iran.
The senator told CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday that the U.S. should be prepared to strike Iran if necessary. He repeated that view Monday on the Fox News Network, saying, "It's time to understand we're prepared to take military action" to "take out" the bases where Iranians are training extremists to kill U.S. military personnel in Iraq.
Retired Gen. Wesley Clark had heard enough.
"Sen. Lieberman's saber rattling does nothing to help dissuade Iran from aiding Shia militias in Iraq, or trying to obtain nuclear capabilities," said Clark, who in 2004 was one of Lieberman's rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination.
"In fact," said Clark, "it's highly irresponsible and counter-productive, and I would urge him to stop."
Lieberman wasn't stopping.
Asked about Clark's remarks, he said, "We've got some enemies out there ... we're not going to defeat them with a lot of talk and warm embraces."
Clark took further aim at Lieberman: "Only someone who never wore the uniform or thought seriously about national security would make threats at this point."
Lieberman got military deferments during the Vietnam era because first he was in college and was later married with children.
If neither jump in, will just sit out the Primaries and vote for whoever the Dems in their ultimate wisdom (/snark) nominate.
Cannot bring myself to vote for anyone who voted for this damn war. There will be a NS crisis in the first year of the next President's term and Hillary and Edwards have already demonstrated their bad judgment....Hillary because she believed in it (so much so she voted against the Levin amendment) and Edwards because it was just a political vote for him which I find disgusting when lives are at stake. The fact that he had a change of heart long after everything turned to shit, does not impress me.
Clark and Gore got it right. As did Obama....but his lack of leadership in the Senate and his willingness to go along to get along....not to mention his constant preaching, drives me nuts.
Richardson supported the war and the MCA and couldn't bring himself to go against Abu Gonzalez because he was a fellow Hispanic....WTF?
I found this to be the most interesting part of his speech....
He cited the long history that both Rumsfeld and Cheney have had in the foreign policy establishment as evidence that experience does not necessarily translate into a successful presidency.
At first blush, I'm sure a lot of people were nodding their heads........but not so fast.
You notice, he's talking about the SOD and the VP. The question was specifically about a President having FP exp. and it's the President's job to filter advice and make informed decisions.
Bush's presidency is a perfect example of the dangers of having a President who doesn't know beans about FP....hearing conflicting advice (Powell being the other side) and picking the wrong course. In Bush's case, he was led willingly but even in a case where the president is not an evil self centered bastard, how does he choose between conflicting points of view if he has no background or experience?
Unfortunately, Edwards has already shown that he depends totally on advice from advisers to make up for this lack of experience. We now find out that he didn't really want to vote for the IWR (the most serious and important vote of his generation) but he took advice from Bob Shrum??? Then there was all that saber rattling against Iran as he sucked up to AIPAC......only to soften his rhetoric when he was lambasted on the net.
A president must know how to listen to different points of view from his advisers but when all is said and done he/she is the ultimate "decider"....period.....full stop.
Edwards has shown, and is still showing, a propensaty to make wrong decisions in areas where he lacks experience and unfortunately there is no compensation for this. He can't fire up the way back machine and make career choices that would have given him insight to NS and prepared him for being the "leader of the free world"
Like it or not, foreign policy is the domain of the Executive Branch
If it were 1992, it wouldn't worry me, but with two hot wars going on and one possibly on the way, not to mention whatever Al Qaeda has in store for us (and all the experts agree it's "when" not "if") I don't think we can afford someone at the helm who doesn't have the background and knowledge to know instinctively how to act and what to do in the next NS crisis.
Let me tell you what Memorial Day is like in small towns across America....
My grandchildren will be taken by their parents to watch their grandfather (the one who is still living) march in a parade and lay a wreath.....for he served as did their other grandfather, now deceased. My daughter and her husband think it's important to teach their children about those who served and sacrificed.
This scene will take place all over middle America and woe to anyone who disrupts it.
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.
In honor of the solemnity of the occasion, General Clark has asked us to take a day off from politics and remember our fallen heroes, and especially to show respect and not co-opt Memorial Day events for protesting the war.
For this reason, we are asking you not to gather SIW petition signatures on Monday, or at anything that can be construed as a Memorial Day event this weekend.
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. It was a time for setting aside divisions and politics and uniting to honor those who had made the ultimate sacrifice.
Traditional observance of Memorial Day has diminished over the years, and many Americans have forgotten the meaning and traditions. Changing the date to create a three-day weekend has perhaps contributed to this. It has become a holiday weekend, a celebration with fireworks, car races, and rib cookoffs. When my grandmother was living, it was her birthday and cause for a family reunion picnic each year.
Good times with family and friends are important, and I hope everyone has something fun scheduled. Taking time to honor our dead does not preclude cherishing life and living with those we most love and enjoy.
Notice, he doesn't restrict it to just Monday.....

Generally he's been a great help to those of us who are against the war
I would have thought you would have felt that you got more help from those who where against the war from the beginning....like Kennedy, Levin, Wellstone (God rest his soul) and Graham. These people stood up when it was NOT popular to do so. Edwards is standing up when the country is 70% against the war. Looks to me like a political move....somewhat similar to his original vote.

Thank you general for stepping up.....as always.
Clinton/Clark 2008
50 states?
Is Obama going to allow Mi and Fl to re-vote?
UF.
My daughter was a Gator too.
And she's a Hillary supporter too.
;)
Well, hopefully intrepid bloggers like Josh Marshal will be able to track down the unedited clip....if he cares to, that is.
Yes she's been doing this for a while
And didn't she also vote against the energy bill while Obama voted for it.
Oh yeah. Just what we need, another president who got everything wrong.

Holding out for Clark or Gore.

So.....am left hoping Clark or Gore.

There's just too much a stake.

Not a chance
She will pick someone who is malleable......someone like Bayh.
I don't see Clark endorsing anyone who has no national security/foreign policy experience.
I'm still hoping he will run himself
Putting his money where his mouth is....
From my mail box
Notice, he doesn't restrict it to just Monday.....
Really?

No courage there.
And what about laying wreaths in the town square?
