Totally agree. Deserved or not, Voinovich was considered a centrist by many Ohioans during his governorship. Because of a term limit he had to go on to something else and was easily elected to the senate.
But then, as LordMike said, the Gingrich era set in, and then I think even more, the Bush-Rove-DeLay era estranged the Republican party from Voinovich even more.
Yes, I think he will retire; I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to be a part of an obstructionist minority scrabbling to keep 40 seats.
You crack me up, alegre. While it's nice of you to take time from penning so many POSITIVE diatribes (er, diaries), you have to knock this totally reasonable one.
I am just sitting back and enjoying the Countdown of your remaining relevance on this blog.
and enjoy this ever-increasingly, self-marginalizing site. I, too, used to look forward to checking MyDD on a regular basis, and have done so for a couple of years. But less and less anymore...
But why should I, and other non-Hilbots, give up on MyDD?
It's true: most (not all) recommended diaries here are attacks. Very little is positive, due to the dearth of positivity emanating from the Clinton campaign these last few weeks.
Every day it's a new, wild, desperate attack. Yesterday it was "boutique states". Today, it's the difference between "caucus delegates" and "regular pledged delegates". Keep reaching...
At the end of the process, she'll only have cemented the contempt of half of the half of the country that didn't already hate her as of a month or so ago.
Just incredible. Way to build a legacy.
And I would have thought the lies, hypocrisy and spin would have given more reasonable MyDD'ers pause...
MediaFreeze said "I'm sort of a meenie so I didn't really care and it was fun to see Fox News tactics used against the bad guys. But, now that I see how he is going after Clinton, I understand her point much better."
In other words, being mean to someone you don't like is okay. Real mature.
MediaFreeze also said "The last thing the corporations that own the media want is for a Democrat to win. They are getting away with too much that would end if a Democrat wins. They believe that they can beat Obama because they created him, but they are afraid of Clinton. They want to install Obama as the nominee so that they can pull the rug out from under him in the fall."
The corporations that own the media want profits, and profits come from ratings. The close race between Clinton and Obama helps their ratings. They want a close race to the election. Jeez.
Try to take it just a little more personally. The media is not only out to get Hillary; they're out to get you, too.
Yeah, it was news to me that Dean Smith is a Dem. Even so, he doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would run for office. However, as the mastermind of the "four-corners offense," he's clearly familiar with the filibuster.
And in the unlikely event that he does, losing the "Duke vote" would hardly matter. I would wager that 70% of Duke graduates are Republicans anyway.
I've ripped a few shows, and defended none so far, except maybe "The Monkeys" (which I would love to see again, BTW) so here are my favorites, so others (such as fans of "The Office", "Gilmore Girls" and "Scrubs") can criticize them:
News or "fake news" -
The News Hour
Countdown with Keith Olbermann
The Daily Show
The Colbert Report
HBO series -
Curb Your Enthusiasm
The Sopranos (tho' last season sucked)
Entourage
Big Love (a very original show IMO)
Sports -
College basketball (but never pro)
Pro football (but rarely college)
Baseball (a St. Louis Cardinals fan in Ohio)
Golf (I play, so I watch)
But the best TV I watched this year was on election night, when I stayed up till 3 am Eastern, waiting to see if Tester would hang on and flip the Senate. Man, that was exciting, watching Webb come back and take down Macaca; wondering WTF was wrong while McCaskill trailed Talent for so long, only to surge ahead when the Kansas City vote came in; and of course Tester holding off Burns.
That was the best TV I have watched in a long time, and probably will be for the next 2 years. Till November, 2008 then...

Slight correction, though far more hilarious IMO.

Have a safe trip.
then I guess you didn't really adios, did you?
There's nothing more lame a GBCW diary. Sad, sorry, self-pitying.
Don't come back now, or you'll have lost all the credibility you've so carefully cultivated.

Drop out.
Of course you'll give it a miss. To watch would mean you would have to confront and deal with what she said.
Let's see alegre(TM) and the rest of you defend this one. That's what I'll "give a miss."

Sadly, no.
Because "Chess Club" of superdelegates knows that to overturn the pledged delegate winner is the only way the Democrats can lose this fall.
I don't see how anyone can think that wouldn't happen.
Echoing others here, why doesn't the Hillary Clinton campaign embrace the 50-state strategy?
Instead, they disparage it as "boutique states" and "latte-sipping states that don't need a president".
Straight out of the Rove-Republican script.
Amazing to see the 50-state strategy embraced here...
You posted a diary about branding the other day.
Is this kind of diary, and diarist, you want to be associated with your brand?
Coca-Cola tried New Coke for a while...
The tone and divisiveness on this site is a an albatross made of millstones.
You are blowing it, man.
Take a step back, Todd, and see who you're thinking like. Should give you an indication.

Duke sucks. Run, Dean, run!
God damn, that fuckin cracked me up. I called my kid into the room before I watched it again; it was that good.
