Indianapolis Star Endorses Clinton

Experience makes Clinton better choice in primary

In this extraordinary election year, Indiana's Democratic voters have been presented with an extraordinary opportunity: Choose for their party's presidential nominee between a gifted senator from Illinois who has enthused millions of new voters and an equally talented senator from New York with years of high-level experience.

It's been difficult for voters in other states to decide a clear favorite between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. It's also a difficult choice for The Star's Editorial Board, which recently questioned each candidate in person about key issues facing the nation.

You can watch both interviews here: Video

Please go read the entire endorsement for yourself, I'm just posting snippets.

Clinton offers a clear-eyed view of the way things are. She offers nuanced positions on how to address the war in Iraq, trade with China and economic expansion. Her depth of knowledge is remarkable.

As impressive as Obama appears, he is still in his first term in the U.S. Senate, and only four years ago was serving as an Illinois state senator. His inexperience in high office is a liability.

Clinton, in contrast, is well prepared for the rigors of the White House. She is tough, experienced and realistic about what can and cannot be accomplished on the world stage.

Yet, one thing is clear: The next commander in chief will take office at a time of extraordinary risk for this nation, both at home and abroad. The challenges -- including those posed by a sagging economy, rising energy and food costs, the gap in health care, wars in two countries and threats from Iran -- are complex.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton is the better choice, based on her experience and grasp of major issues, to confront those challenges. She earns The Star's endorsement in Tuesday's primary.

Like they said.

She earned it

Yep, yep, yep...

Horray for the Indy Star! I'm glad that they saw in Hillary what we see in her- that's she's one amazingly brilliant, stunningly beautiful, surprisingly compassionate, & steadfastly strong woman who will make a great President. :-)

Re: Indianapolis Star Endorses Clinton

my favorite part heh even they know the gas tax is nothing but pander

Clinton regrettably has pandered more to voters, particularly on gas prices, than Obama. Both have taken stands on free trade that give in to protectionism.

Clinton also was an integral part of her husband's political machine, which earned a reputation for flattening opponents. That factor understandably gives many voters pause about whether another Clinton should serve as president.

But that is where Hill differs from McNasty

She wants to pay for it with the Oil Company windfall profits that by the way Obama helped with his vote in favor of the Cheney "Energy" Bill.

by NewHampster 2008-05-02 05:15AM | 0 recs
Re: But that is where Hill differs from McNasty

which has resulted in a net tax on the oil companies, which everyone who is honest on the subject admits.

and I am sorry WHEN is she putting in a windfall tax again? I assume sometime in the next 24 days she plans to propose it and she will leave the campaign trail to get it passed right?

sometime in the next 24 days before the tax they want starts?

Re: But that is where Hill differs from McNasty

Look, this whole gas tax is moot anyway with George W. McBush in the White House.

The bottom line: It's only relevant as an indicator to display each CANDIDATES' position on pocketbook issues - which is ultimately what it is, a pocketbook issue.

I'm afraid that at least the Ad that Obama's running down here in NC falls short, it simply states its a $20 ploy, a gimmick then offers no solution. Says it's the same old washington - that just isn't working for him anymore down here.

Hillary's counter Ad plays well.  Take the money from record Oil company profits, when times are tough finding an extra Twenty Dollar Bill in your blue jeans is cause for celebration.

Economists and Obamaists can point out this study, that theory, blah blah . . . fact is this doesn't help him regardless who and how many times it's said.

Re: But that is where Hill differs from McNasty

Yes, and how about the irony of Obama voting for the energy bill with it's subsidies for oil companies and now running TV ads promising to impose windfall profit taxes on those oil companies.  You want pander, Obama's got plenty and he's giving it.

by Tolstoy 2008-05-02 06:47AM | 0 recs
While I disagree with her plan on

this, it is a wash re cost.  The windfall profits tax pays for it.

As Krugman said:

The Clinton twist is that she proposes paying for the revenue loss with an excess profits tax on oil companies. In one pocket, out the other. So it's pointless, not evil. But it is pointless, and disappointing.

He also said this, though:

Add: Just to be clear: I don't regard this as a major issue. It's a one-time thing, not a matter of principle, especially because everyone knows the gas-tax holiday isn't actually going to happen. Health care reform, on the other hand, could happen, and is very much a long-term issue -- so poisoning the well by in effect running against universality, as Obama has, is a much more serious breach.

How very true, Hampster...

Hillary also talked about this herself on "Nightline" last night. She explained herself well when she said that saving $30-70 over the summer may not be a big deal to more affluent folks, but any help that's offered helps all these working class families pinching pennies in these hard times.

It' was your comment, not mine
Shocking that someone who supports a "feminist" candidate would have the view that somehow an industry that exploits women is "healthy". And amazing that the same clinton supporters who  scream about the sexism in the media are saying nothing about your views.
And I have no idea what you mean by stalker. I just looked through your comments and found your misogynist views about women.
by venician 2008-05-02 08:04PM | 0 recs
Re: It' was your comment, not mine

Hillary's a female but hardly an outspoken feminist.  Porn exploits men just as much as women.  Your arguments are inflammatory but they are easy to extinguish.

Re: Indianapolis Star Endorses Clinton

You think it's better to pander to the oil companies?  She'll trade a stupid tax break for oil to a fun tax break for drivers. And she'll keep pandering once she's in office too, taking the panders for the polluters and pander to green energy. She'll take the panders from the super rich and pander to the struggling. Why is it bad to pander to the people but good to pander to corporations?  Explain?

Newspaper endorsements don't really buy a great deal of votes, but they are still a nice thing to have in your pocket. This is more good news for Hillary in Indiana

This is great endorsement.  The Obama surrogates are having no affect on IN voters because they don't buy the slick act that put together for Obama.

I wonder if DailyKos' head exploded yet?  I don't go on the blog anymore, so it must be getting crazy over there.  Barry's mask is slipping...

slathering slick shiny material over Obama so that all you can see of him is reflection.  Clinton gets, as usual, a kick in the ass.

Indianapolis Star Endorses Clinton

It's a good endorsement, although they do say she's pandering.

by venavena 2008-05-02 08:05AM | 0 recs
She isn't Pandering

It's time for the oil companies to give some of this extravagant windfall back to the country.

by internetstar 2008-05-02 09:19AM | 0 recs
So why isn't she

whipping votes for that, independantly of the gas tax issue?  Oh right, because it may not buy enough votes.

by corph 2008-05-02 11:07AM | 0 recs
Re: She is Pandering

to the OIL companies with the gas tax.

Why does Hillary want to take away road construction jobs, increase demand for blood Oil, and pollute the environment?  The only one who profits is the oil companies.

I thought she wanted to take away windfall profits from the oil company?  She is working against herself?  Or is she supporting oil companies?

Is she dumb enough to work against herself or is she she working for the oil companies.  Any opinions?

Only slightly dishonest...

You skipped my favorite parts!

You know!  The part where they call her out for pandering:

Clinton regrettably has pandered more to voters, particularly on gas prices, than Obama.

OOOH!  And the part where they make the logical leap from "threats from Iran" to endorsing the candidate who makes those threats back AT Iran, thus helping to ensure higher oil costs and future unnecessary wars.  No, not McCain.  Not Bush or Cheney, either.  The OTHER person who does that...Hillary!  Because when you're about to start your third war, don't you want a leader who has the experience of voting for one, before?

by freedom78 2008-05-02 11:09AM | 0 recs
Re: Only slightly dishonest...

Hillary DOES have experience in war.  Not only she voted for one, but I also heard she enlisted and protected her platoon from sniper fires.  She was awarded the purple heart from Bush.

Tangent:

Hillary is live on CNN
http://www.cnn.com/video/live/live.html? stream=stream2

And it's a GREAT appearance.  She's talking to a crowd of moms and has gotten very personal with stories and anecdotes of raising Chelsea.  She has had the moms laughing almost non-stop.

I've never seen this much personal side of Hillary.

Re: Indianapolis Star Endorses Clinton

"threats from Iran -- are complex."

But the solution is simple, per Hillary: OBLITERATE IRAN.  So let's all endorse Hillary!!!

With this kind of candidate analysis coming from the Indianapolis Star, we can really count on them to deliver accurate news and analysis.

by hienmango 2008-05-03 09:11AM | 0 recs
Richard Mellon Scaife also endorsed Hillary

So big frakkin deal.

At this point, she'll take any endorsement.  She's got nothing left to lose.

Re: Indianapolis Star Endorses Clinton

The editors of the Indianapolis Star apperently have forgotten the long list of lies, corruption and scandals that have tainted the Clintons since they teamed up 38 years ago. Well, let us rimind them of a few:

--Her alleged brilliance.  Truth is that she flunked her D.C. bar exam, and her career was going nowhere until she teamed up with Bill.  Without him, she would have ended up a obscure bureaucrat, if that.

--Her fake accomplishments.  Not only did she not dodge sniper fire in Bosnia, but she never brokered a peace treaty or figured in any official diplomatic negotiations.  Her role as First Lady was merely ceremonial, no different from that of Roslyn Carter, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush or any of her predecessors.

--Her false feminism.  Rather to take Bill to task for his compulsive philandering, she retained a detective to dig up dirt on the women seduced.

--Her disdain for the military.  At White House parties she used Marines in dress uniform as waiters and busboys.

--Her abusive behavior.  She routinely cussed out her staff and rebuked underlings who dared make eye-contact with her.

--Her arrogance, backstabbing and inability to work with others.  That so many former Clinton officials and associates have broken with her--Dick Morris, Bill "Judas" Richardson, Federico Peña, Robert Reich, to name some; that so many ranking Democrats in Congress--Ted Kennedy, Chris Dodd, John Kerry, John Lewis--don't trust her; that even the former V.P. under Bill Clinton is reluctant to endorse her--all that speaks for itself.

--Her  weak congressional record.  Of the 20 bills she introduced and managed to get passed in her eight year as U.S. Senator, 16 were for inconsequential stuff like honoring individuals, naming post offices and courthouses, and congratulating lacrosse teams.

--The criminal connection. The Clintons business and political dealings with some 40 individuals and groups subsequently convicted of various crimes, Bills brother, Roger included.   Their ties with the "Dixie Mafia" in Arkansas.

--The dubious cattle futures profit,  Though she had no prior experience in futures trading, Hillary once  managed to parlay a $1,000 investment into $100,000 in less than a year, an unheard of feat in the legitimate investment world.

--Whitewatergate.  A crooked real estate scheme that went sour when Bill Clinton was governor of Arkansas.  Though the Clintons were legally cleared, there was ample evidence that they were involved.

--Travelgate.  Ordering a trumped-up FBI investigation on seven long-time employees of the White House travel office, Hillary fired them to give the jobs to friends.

--Chinagate.  Bill received generous contributions from Chinese operatives--later convicted as felons--in exchange for help in easing restrictions on the sale of technological equipment to China.

i--The punitive IRS audits.  The Clintons routinely ordered IRS audits of organizations and individuals critical of them.

Filegate.   Hillary gained improper access to FBI files on some 700 individuals for political blackmail.

--Pardongate..   Before leaving office, Bill pardoned 140 convicted felons, most of whom had contributed to his political campaigns..

--The sudden wealth  The Clintons left the White House saddled with huge debts, yet in less than a year they resurfaced  as multimillionaires.

--The Impeachment.  Bill Clinton was the first elected president in U.S. history, and only the second, to be impeached.  Was acquitted by the Senate by a narrow vote of 55 to 45.

--The disbarments.  Bill Clinton was disbarred by from trying cases in Federal Courts, and  lost his license to practice law in Arkansas.

. --The body count.   During the Clinton regimes in Washington and Arkansas,  some 50+ persons suffered untimely deaths by murder, suicide, accidents and unexplained causes.

If the Clintons are the kind of leaders that major newspapers endorse and their uninformed readers slavishly embrace,  then God help America.
