Not entirely sure what you mean by this post, who learned their lessons from Drudge and Noonan?  What's wrong with holding both sides accountable?  Do you honestly think this story is 100% accurate?

I would really prefer to see some facts rather than rely on this story.

The YouTube video provided by Matt doesn't show people getting trampled by horses as was indicated in the title.

If anything, the police are using the horses as an intimidation tactic.  I haven't seen anywhere where a protester was actually injured as a result of the horse or police officers.

The police have a duty to prevent public disruption.  If these protesters were, as the caption above says, sitting in the intersection, they needed to be moved.  There is a difference between a picket line and public disruption.

Nobody deserves to be injured, and I hope there is an investigation into the claims made by Ms. Solis.  If the police overstepped their boundries and committed brutality such as letting a diabetic collapse on the floor and kicking another woman's broken wrist, then they need to be prosecuted.

If Ms. Solis is exaggerating the facts to make people sympathetic, she should be prosecuted for slander.

I think we would have had a lot more retirements if we hadn't taken the majority.  Levin, Harkin, and Biden all stand to be committee chairs.  They're not going to abandon that.

  • comment on a post Harman v Hastings: Blue Dogs to make their move over 5 years ago

I read somewhere that Pelosi had decided on Rep. Sylvestre Reyes from Texas.  I don't remember where, but I do recall that Hastings would not be chairman.

  • These are two freshmen who haven't even cast a vote or sat through a hearing.  That in itself is a non-starter.

  • comment on a post New DCCC Chair: A Call For Nominations over 5 years ago

    I think they should do a co-chairmanship.

Debbie Wasserman-Schulz in Florida and Chris Van Hollen are superb fundraisers, young, and career focused.  They want to advance, and they know they need more seats to do that.

  • comment on a post Carville Wanted Zell Miller To Become Vice-President over 5 years ago

Zell Miller circa 2000 was MUCH different than Zell post-9/11.  The man changed in a big way.

He was a strong ally of President Clinton and in terms of policy, he brought free college to Georgia students if they went to state universities.

  • on a comment on Jack Murtha has the votes over 5 years ago

Congressional Quarterly has a solid article on this.  http://www.cqpolitics.com/2006/11/pelosi _sets_up_early_test_of_h.html#more

The gist of it is not necessarily personal, though many view Hoyer as disloyal.  Issuing a press release saying the exact opposite of what your party's leader is saying at the same time shows you they don't have a solid working relationship.

The article cites Hoyer's support for Dick Cheney's energy bill and bankruptcy "reform" bill as points of discord between Hoyer and Murtha.

Mostly, Hoyer is wrong on the war.  When Pelosi backed Murtha's call for withrdawl of troops, Hoyer expressed that the US can still achieve "victory" and "succeed" in Iraq.

  • Schumer is a political giant.  He's bloodthirsty and ruthless with the enemy and he keeps the troops in line.  I'd much rather him be our general than say, Jeff Bingaman or Kent Konrad.  Nice guys both, but they don't have the same drive Schumer does.

As an added thing, Schumer is battle-tested.  John Ensign, the Republican campaign leader, has to build his organization from scratch after Elizabeth Dole practically destroyed it.

  • comment on a post Senate Committee Assignments over 5 years ago

Having two senators from the same party on a committee is unusual at best.  It's pure overrepresentation at worst.

Committee assignments will change again in two years, and if Democrats pick up a number of GOP seats we have more freshmen, and more committee seats.

Reid promised Tester a spot on Appropriations "as soon as possible."  Recognize that much of the committee placement is based on seniority, and the way seniority is determined when everyone is elected on the same night depends on when the polls close in a particular state.

Therefore, if polls close at 7pm EST in Ohio, and 8pm EST in Missouri, then the senator from Ohio technically has more seniority because voters are still casting ballots in Missouri when the Ohio polls are closed.  Therefore the race isn't yet decided.

BTW, freshmen never get appropriations.  Lautenburg and Nelson (NE) are the two most junior members.  Frank will be retring so that makes on Dem opening; Byrd and Inoye are ancient and anything can happen to them in the next few years; Leahy is happy at Judiciary.

  • comment on a post Jack Murtha has the votes over 5 years ago

Jack Murtha is no liberal, neither is Hoyer.

Murtha is anti-choice, pro-gun, and pro-corporate interests.  He's against the war, which makes him a good voice, but he and Stoyer are very similar politically.

  • comment on a post Senate Leadership Election Results over 5 years ago

Schumer back at the helm is a great idea.  His candidates were more successful than Rahm's, and Democrats won in all but one race the DSCC targeted (TN, I don't count AZ because they didn't target it until late).

Not to mention, while the Republican chairman will have to start from scratch, Schumer has a staff and a network built already.  It should be easy for him to raise more money this time, and now that the Dems are in the majority, easy to recruit the strongest challengers.

I wonder if the Dem challenger against Lamar Alexander will be Phil Bredesen or Harold Ford.

  • comment on a post Clinton To Leave Senate Leadership Position over 5 years ago

Remember 1991.  An ambitious, popular New Yorker named Mario Cuomo was the perceived front-runner for the Democratic nomination.  He dipped his toe in the water, pulled it out, and a man named Bill Clinton became the nominee.

  • No, didn't you hear Mike Moore's moving to Missouri? lol My mistake.

  • comment on a post College campuses: an untapped resource for campaigns over 5 years ago

My university is the largest in my state, and it's also a commuter campus.  That means few students live on campus, and most of the students also have full-time jobs or family commitments.

The most successful political organization on my campus is the Political Science Student Association, which really just meets once a month at a local bar and is pretty much an even partisan split.

The campus Dems and Republicans are weak organizations, frequently disappearing for a year or two at a time.  There is little continuity and they are not respected in the city.

I imagine many campuses are like this.
