Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manufactured by media?

I ran across this in comments over at TPM:

I am outraged by this story. I saw the ORGINAL clip of the reporters question. He FIRST asked Bill whether Obama could win as a black candidate...then added the second part of the question. The media CUT the first part, then accused Bill of injecting `race' (with Jesse Jackson) into this response. These tactics are increasingly alarming to me and show that the media is not only deliberately trying to "spin" again Bill Clinton, they are stealing the election from the American people. People need to stand up to this -- it is WRONG!

I thought the Jackson comment was sort of a non-sequitor to the question and tried to explain what it really meant.  But if there really was a question about black candidates BEFORE the part of the question we all have heard now, there is a lot of explaining to do and Ted Kennedy may have to take back his endorsement, since he says this comment is what put him over the edge for Obama.

This comment has been roundly criticized in the media and on the blogs.  So I think this is a really big deal.  My apologies for the short diary.

I think Kennedy's endorsement had almost nothing to do with this comment, for whatever it's worth.

Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

My common sense tells me that with all the attention this has received, if there really were some additional context the Clinton campaign would have gotten the word out by now.

It's easy for someone to start a rumor in an anonymous comment thread on the Internet.

Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

Still be carried at Huffington Post this Sunday evening. I'm certain it would have been retracted by now were it not true. What? Bill Clinton, the first Black president, playing the race card:

The Clinton campaign has never looked as hard into the future -- or the past -- as it did last night. Hillary had already left South Carolina for Tennessee, and Bill was giving a semi-concession speech from Missouri, looking forward to the millions of people who will be voting on Super Tuesday -- since the hundreds of thousands in South Carolina didn't exactly go the way the Clintons had hoped. And he desperately tried to spin Obama's triumph away by telling reporters that Jesse Jackson won South Carolina twice, in 1984 and 1988. But however hard the Clintons are trying to look forward to our Super Tuesday future or drag us into the Jesse Jackson past, there are some stunning numbers in the present they have to deal with: Obama got 295,091 votes to Clinton's 141,128 (more than twice as many). He got more votes than John McCain and Mike Huckabee combined (279,723). He won 78% of the black vote, 25% of the white vote, and 52% of the non-black vote under 30. And he was more than a little responsible for the fact that Democratic turnout was twice that of 2004 (532,000 to 280,000). These numbers are pretty hard to run away from.

Bill has now become an albatross around Hillary's neck. How can he not be questioned about his intent from now until November. It is like a presidential candidate inadvertently saying the "N" word...oops. But Bill knew exactly what he was saying. First it was inexperience; now it is being Black. What's next?

Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

Uh, no, it's nothing like saying the "N" word, but thanks for the usual dose of overwrought hysterics.

Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

Sorry, but everything Bill Clinton says is calculated to attain some proHillary effect, at least by initial intent.

Calling Barak Obama the Jesse Jackson candidate, yes the "Black" candidate, is playing the race card.

It backfired. Bill's problem is that his intellect, however, extensive and facile, seems to deteriorate under emotional conditions like anger, when his judgment fails him. Gingrich called Bill the most astute politician of our generation based on his wily knack for stealing Republican positions, the DLC way to electoral success. However, today it is an outmoded political philosophy.

The Democrats are back.

Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

It evidently aired in South Carolina markets in the complete form.  Two posters at the same link mentioned it, one of them an Obama supporter.  Maybe someone has tivo.  It has the "Decision 08" logo, which is MSNBC.  First Read had part of the transcript, but not the part referred to by the commenters.  Before this there seems to have been a question about John Kerry's accusations.  That is in the transcript.  Then there is a missing part, confirmed by Bill referring to that being part of the "bait" too.  Then comes the part we have all seen.  That part in between, confirmed by two witnesses, is what is missing in the transcripts and videos.

Mike-there maybe something to this...

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/ 01/28/jackson-not-upset-by-clinton-remar ks/

There is video of Mr. Clinton's response to that one question but not of the entire exchange with reporters. But Mike Memoli, a campaign reporter for MSNBC and the National Journal, wrote the most complete account of the exchange, and it contains no other reference to Mr. Jackson. Mr. Memoli said in an e-mail that no one had mentioned Mr. Jackson until that point.

As word of Mr. Clinton's remarks about Mr. Jackson spread on television and the Internet on Saturday, the blogosphere exploded with accusations that the former president was gratuitously mentioning him as a way of diminishing Mr. Obama's candidacy and suggesting that his win in South Carolina would have little long-term significance. Comments on numerous blogs reflected anger at Mr. Clinton for his increasing visibility in his wife's campaign; some said that his remarks about Mr. Jackson had pushed them over the edge and that they were no longer supporting Mrs. Clinton.

Former President Bill Clinton said he might have gone too far in attacking Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton said on Friday, adding that both Democratic presidential campaigns should focus on issues.

"He said several times yesterday that maybe he got a little bit carried away," Hillary Clinton said on CBS' "Early Show."

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/01/2 7/ftn/main3756327.shtml

SCHIEFFER: Has he gotten a little carried away from time to time?

Sen. CLINTON: Well, I think it's human nature, Bob. I think that, you know, the spouses of all
three of us have, you know, been passionate and vigorous defenders of each of us and, you know,
maybe got a little carried away. But you know, that comes with a hard-fought election. It also
comes with sleep deprivation, which, you know, I think is marking all of us, our families, our
supporters.

-Face the Nation (CBS News) - Sunday, January 27, 2008

And now on Drudge:

NYT LEAD MONDAY: Hillary's campaign will try to 'shift former President Bill Clinton back into positive, supportive-spouse role' he played before her loss in Iowa...

by animated 2008-01-27 05:18PM | 0 recs
nice try

Here is the full context of Hillary Clinton's remarks about Bill:

http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/ main500251.shtml?id=3751519n

And you know, obviously he gets excited, he gets really passionate about making the case for me, he said several times yesterday that maybe he got a little bit carried away, so we are all going to, on both sides, I think, try to bring this debate and this campaign back to the issues that are most important.

A little bit carried away making the case for me constitutes "loose cannon" only in the fevered imaginations of Obama supporters. Bill Clinton will keep doing his job, and you will keep feigning outrage over it. Bill and Hillary Clinton have raised the questions about Barack Obama's record that needed to be raised, over the next week no doubt they will make the positive case for Hillary to the February 5th states.

Re: what loose canon behavior?

There was evidence for Clinton friend Ted Kennedy and former Clinton aide Rahm Emanuel to tell Clinton to stop the salacious attacks on Obama.

Bill Clinton has injected racial rhetoric into this campaign in order to marginalize Barack Obama. They made a basic calculation that they wanted this race to become a binary, black and white choice. Bill played racial Jesse Helms politics by pitting blacks against whites.

His final rallies in SC featured few black supporters. Why? Because they were disgusted by his remarks.

Hillary needs to rise above her husband's despicable actions and instead focus on her strong agenda for America.

Ted's been waiting for any excuse to endorse him- that's fine- no one thinks he would endorse someone who could actually WIN- Caroline is a great one, though- but not Ted.

Clinton surrogates have accused Obama of going to a madrassa, bedding fewer black women than Bill did, not being black enough, being too black, dealing cocaine, being too hard on Hillary, being too soft for the general.

You guys are everywhere!

The Clinton campaign attacked Edwards for supporting trade deals; the Clintons passed NAFTA.

The Clinton campaign attacked Obama on Rezco; Clintons took dirty money from a Chinese spy, sold off the Lincoln Bedroom, accepted funds from Hsu, and made a loan to convicted felon David Hale.

I love Hillary Clinton and I'm voting for her; but I despise her campaign.

Bill has been out-manuevered by the media. Now he has dug in his heels and won't shut up and sit down. He was baited back in the Monica days and it's happened again. He never said anything approaching racism, doesn't have a racist bone in his body, yet he's wasting all of this energy and time fighting with these nuckleheads.

Damage is done. I see Obama leads in CO over on TPM.

Furthermore this could point to how Hil would govern as Pres. Would Bill be allowed to screw up negotiations or an important domestic bill?

you gotta follow up on this and say how its become a HUGE thing with the "netroots" and kevin drum etc...and everybody wants to know more, specifically whether msnbc edited thee tape to doctor the quote.  BE NICE! Dont question his good faith, blame it on msnbc.

You can e-mail them if you want.

According to ABC News' Politcal Punch blog, the question was indeed asked by David Wright. However, they only provide the edited clip. And they characterize Bill as bringing up Jesse Jackson "out of no-where", so it would be interesting to see the full clip.

This is an MSNBC piece according to the "Decision 08" logo on the video.  And it seems to have been in Spartanburg, because Fox News had a reference to the previous part about John Kerry (link), which was also mentioned in MSNBC's First Read. (link)

Watch the video

If the poster at TPM is correct, there were 2 questions, which makes more sense because why would Bill bring up Jesse Jackson out of the blue if the question was merely (as shown):  "What does it say about Barack Obama that it takes 2 of you to beat him?" It really doesn't make sense.

If you watch the clip up at YouTube, Bill starts out  with a laugh and says, "That's just bait, too, Jesse Jackson won South Carolina twice..."

Is this a lie as well?

From AP:

Clinton campaign strategists denied any intentional effort to stir the racial debate. But they said they believe the fallout has had the effect of branding Obama as "the black candidate," a tag that could hurt him outside the South.

by Piuma 2008-01-27 03:22PM | 0 recs
Re: Is this a lie as well?

Well, if they set a trap then Obama was stupid enough to walk right into it.

The evidence doesn't support it though. Obama's campaign started all the race stuff after NH.

by Ga6thDem 2008-01-27 04:36PM | 0 recs
Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

It would still be a stupid response. Here's the correct answer:

Q: Can Obama win as a black candidate?

A: Yes. I believe that this contest will be decided based on the character, judgment, leadership skills, and experience of the candidates. Race doesn't matter.

by dmc2 2008-01-27 04:54PM | 0 recs
Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

The answer "Well Jesse Jackson won in 1984 and 1988" makes perfect sense too though, if that were the question.

Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

Not unless you're trying to promote racial polarization within your Party instead of reduce it. The responsible thing to do would be assume the best in people, that they will decide on the merits, not on race. Anything else is just race-baiting.

by dmc2 2008-01-27 05:19PM | 0 recs
Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

I guess we will have to disagree on this one.  I think if I was asked if a black candidate could win I would mention black candidates who have already won in my answer.  Go figure.

Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

The question was: Can a black candidate win?

Clinton's response: Well, Jesse Jackson won South Carolina also (implication: just because a black candidate wins South Caroline means nothing about whether he'll win the nomination or not.)

by dmc2 2008-01-27 06:30PM | 0 recs
Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

Part of the problem is that we don't have the first part of the question.  As I understood it, the first part was actually asking about South Carolina.  But we don't have the actual question.  I have been operating under the assumption that the question was about South Carolina, but I notice that isn't actually in the quote I gave.

by Mike Pridmore 2008-01-27 06:44PM | 0 recs
Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

Well the diary is based on the assertion that the actual question was whether Obama could win as a black candidate. The correct answer was yes. Does he really want to say that Obama can't win because he's black?

by dmc2 2008-01-27 07:03PM | 0 recs
Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

Yeah, right...  Sure we were.  Bill specifically referenced, and juxtaposed, Jackson's and Obama's campaigns.  If you are assuming he was just talking about the primaries without referencing the implications for Obama's nomination chances I think you underestimate him, and us.

by Shaun Appleby 2008-01-27 06:35PM | 0 recs
Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

I have no idea what Bill was talking about.  But I was actually thinking about just South Carolina.  I see your point about Bill, but he and I don't talk on a regular basis so I haven't had a chance to ask him.

Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

Fair enough.  There seems to be a consensus of opinion forming on this point, especially regarding the reamrk you are dissecting, but who knows?:

In South Carolina, they saw the Clintons, and especially Bill, trying to use race to sink Obama's candidacy, and their response was to smack the Big Dog and his wife across the nose with a rolled-up newspaper.

John Heilemann - Clintons Had South Carolina Coming New York Magazine 27 Jan 08

There has been a surprising 'backlash' on these comments so it is probably relevant that you seek to exactly establish their context, I would do the same if my candidate, or surrogates, were being equally savaged.  We will watch this story with interest and hope you let us know if you can provide some proof to your thesis, it would certainly serve to ameliorate the energetic backlash to this particular comment.

by Shaun Appleby 2008-01-27 07:31PM | 0 recs
Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

I think it is possible that the media is just trying to stir up $hit and blame it on the Clintons.  Or Obama if it is convenient.  They want to have discord among the Dems as a headline.

by Mike Pridmore 2008-01-27 09:04PM | 0 recs
Re: Breaking: Clinton's comment about Jackson manu

Yeah, why doesn't the media replay what really started the race issue...Michele Obama exhorting blacks to vote black because it was time for a black president.   That's pretty direct, no?

Or Oprah at those huge rallies slipping into phony
speech mode????

Please, there really is something going on here, if the media is cutting the video and replaying the "offending" part over and over out of context.  There was nothing wrong with Hillary's comment about MLK and a need for a President willing to sign bills into law, either!

And I am NO Billary fan!!

PS--Shelby Steele, Obama's biographer, was on BookTV yesterday....seems like Obama is another
Bill Clinton, perhaps...he seems to crave approval.
Steele quotes Obama saying that even at age 14, he had if figured out..."If you don't make people angry, they'll like you."  Sound familiar???

Stop Digging

Bill Clinton made a really bone-headed comment. Simple as that.

And as for this wild-eyed theory of yours, remember which network interviewed Bill Clinton to get that answer from him --- ABC News. George Stephanopoulos, an ex-Clintonite had Barack on this morning and asked him about Bill's comment. You really think George and ABC News didn't do their research before George's his condemnation of Bill? If anything, Stephanopoulos won't stand for his former boss to get attacked like this.

Another thing -- Why is the Clinton campaign, masters at spin and damage control, so silent? Must be the truth to large to spin this time around.

The truth can be silencing sometimes. And this is a prime, caught red-handed, dog-whistling remark from the former 'first black president', Bubba Clinton. A shameless, disgusting comment from someone most of us used to respect. How times have changed.

Here's a clue...

From http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/ 2008/01/clinton-camp-do.html

This might be the question before the current question:

Clinton bristled when asked to react to Kerry's statement, noting he respects John Kerry and has supported him in the past.

"This is just part of politics," Clinton said.  "We should just not take the bait and go on and make our cases."

Thanks for the link.

how about a update...

..to your diary with the complete context now that it is known?
ABC News
Turns out Bill's comments about Jesse Jackson were just as incongruous as it has been portrayed. Sorry, can't blame the media for this one.

A number of prominent Barack Obama supporters and neutral observers have criticized Clinton's vocal role on his wife's behalf. John Kerry told National Journal that "being an ex-president does not give you license to abuse the truth."

"Did you notice he didn't specify?" Clinton said when asked about the comment. "They never do. They hurl these charges, but nothing gets specified. I'm not taking the bait today. I did what I could to help Senator Kerry every time he needed me, and every time he asked me. He can support whomever he wants for whatever reason he wants. But there's nothing for me to respond to."

Another reporter asked what it said about Obama that it "took two people to beat him." Clinton again passed. "That's' just bait, too. Jesse Jackson won South Carolina twice, in '84 and '88. And he ran a good campaign. Senator Obama's run a good campaign here, he's run a good campaign everywhere."

by JoeCoaster 2008-01-28 07:02AM | 0 recs
Re: how about a update...

It is interesting to note that once again we don't know the actual question that was asked.  Was race a specific component of the Kerry question?

Looking over this and the rest of your posts in the thread, and comparing with your sig line's declaration of being a "proud" supporter, I must say my head is spinning. Regardless of what the question was, I don't understand why the answer is controversial, even if it is a bit of a non sequitur.

Race is a strange subject in our political discourse. Everyone is aware of its importance, but nobody is allowed to talk about it.

No wonder we can't make much progress--it's the subject that must not be named.
