Chris, Jerome, Scott

Read the attached comments and advise those who fueled this discussion accordingly. I would have enjoyed becoming a more engaged participant in your community, but I do not see how that is possible given the parasitic company you choose to keep. Back to writing the dissertation, which is probably what I should have been doing anyway. Good luck. I hereby resign. For those of you who enjoyed anything I have offered to this blog, I apologize. You can thank the participants whose names are listed in the comments section who feel entitled to engage in vicious attacks instead of productive debate. This was a diary on Haliburton's participation in reconstruction efforts in the Gulf Coast area. Now it is a forum for children to misdirect their anxieties and frustrations. I am profoundly disappointed with these antics. And now I notice someone has created a diary in order to besmirch my otherwise stellar reputation. I entered this blog in order to engage in debate with those who are equally outraged by our political situation. Now I realize this is a forum where consensus is created by bitter and uninformed participants and not serious political observors. This is upsetting, as I believe we can collectively change our political landscape. But we will not if we continue to valorize this divisiveness and immaturity. Good luck. Sincerely, metonym in Chicago

Link?

Re: Link?
Oh, never mind.  Let me do it for you:

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/business/3335685

I'm not goint to take your word for it (or anything), so back it up with a link!

And by the way, USN has a contract relationship with Halliburton/KBR.  No real surprise there. We are talking about military facilities, not the entire City of New Orleans (as you mistated in your title).

Re: Link?
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that apology. The man has two perfectly valid points:

  1. You made a claim without providing any links to back you up.

  2. You mistated (whether deliberately or not) Halliburton's role in rebuilding New Orleans.

And I think the addressed you in a condescending manner is that you obviously have an over-inflated opinion of yourself, your intellect, and your diaries, and he was trying to let some of the hot air out of you.

Re: Link?
I will not yield on either point.  I provided the name of the publication and the date in my post.  If one will complain because they are either too lazy or too inept to do the research themselves, I do not believe that should reflect upon my willingness and generosity to make others aware of something that does not bode will for the reconstruction of New Orleans.

Your willingness and generosity?

I cannot stop laughing.  Really, I am laughing.
Thanks again for the good laugh!

Re: Link?
I didn't say anything about what you did two days ago.

And since no one else here gets the Houston Chronicle, you have a duty to include a link so that we don't dismiss your claims as unsupported by evidence.

An I find it amusing that you call me "puerile" after calling everyone else lazy and inept for not doing your job for you.

by craverguy 2005-09-02 06:19PM | 0 recs
Re: Link?
The comment referrenced Haliburton's work on naval facilities in Mississippi and New orleans, period.  That seems fairly consistent with both sides.

LOL

People who take themselves as seriously as metonym, and on a BLOG for god's sake, and are (as she claims to be) in a Ph.D. program, either just started, or haven't got very good advisors.  Letting out hot air is supposed to be THEIR job.

You know, I once had a professor who would curl up in the fetal position in a windowsill during class now and again.  He took himself very seriously, too.

chortle.

Re: Link?
I have no idea who you are, and I have no idea why you believe you can address me in such a condescending manner.  I expect an apology, and I expect you to publicly apologize in this diary.

That's the funniest thing I've read all day.

You really have been beaten around on MyDD over the past day or so.

I'm not sorry, but I do feel sorry for you.

Oh, thanks.  Really funny!

Re: Link?
I heard something similar on Air America today
by v2aggie2 2005-09-02 09:18PM | 0 recs
Re: Link?
That would have been fine, except Metonym cut and pasted a passage of the news clip without providing the link.

His original post/thread never stated that he heard it on Air America.

Re: My Rigor
Since when did actual proof of your claims become non-compelling?
by craverguy 2005-09-02 06:00PM | 0 recs
Re: My Rigor
My diaries are rigorous, and I tend to only discuss that which I find compelling.  To have you enter one of my diaries and try to invalidate me and my integrity is immature and frankly confrontational.  I am still awaiting your sincere apology.  Note I rated you accordingly.

Stop it!  My side is hurting.

I'm still laughing...wow, you're funny!

Re: Immaturity
Apparently you don't have enough of a personal investment to get your facts straight about what's going on or spend the incredible five seconds it would have taken you to paste a link into the diary.

And if you want to know what events of the past few days have created this hostility, I will reveal this patently obvious information to you:

You started spamming other people's diaries to promote your own. When people objected to that, you started maliciously troll-rating them. When you were called on that, you first denied it and then made a series of statements distorting both the nature of the comments and the actions that preceded the ratings. Then you insulted the intelligence of everyone who disagreed with you.

I hope that cleared some things up for you.

by craverguy 2005-09-02 06:26PM | 0 recs
Re: stop
Your hopes are doomed to be crushed, I fear. So long as you troll-rate others just because you don't like them, I will super-rate them to reverse the damage you have done.
by craverguy 2005-09-02 06:27PM | 0 recs
Re: stop
  1. It's 9:30 on a Friday night and I already had dinner. I have nothing but time.

  2. Your volunteer work is subpar. If you really want that Ph.D., you're going to have to start citing sources.

  3. You might want to check those ratings rules yourself, pal. I'm almost positive that personal malice is not a valid reason to troll-rate somebody.

Re: Immaturity
I want an end to this behaviour, and I want everyone to focus.

Yep, that's an immature comment.  Demanding, misdirected, and ridiculous.

FIND A WAY TO SUBLIMATE YOUR ANGER.

I'm not angry.  I find you funny.  It does not take a PhD to figure out that you are "on a different level."

Or is it Ph.D, or PhD., or...?  Someone help me out there?!

Oh, by the way:  I recommended this Diary.  Really funny!

Re: Immaturity
Good for you. We're allowing your statements to legitimize ours.
by craverguy 2005-09-02 06:40PM | 0 recs
Re: stop
And please refrain from rating each other favorably when their clearly no knowledge articulated in your comments.

That does not read like a well formed PhD comment.

Or Ph.D

This is ridiculous, and I hope you will join me in placing a moratorium on such practices.

Moratorium!?!  The humor continues.

Re: stop
Perhaps you could also stick to one spelling of the word "puerile."

Re: stop
ad hominem?

Oh, my.  We are way beyond common folk talk now.

You must be really smart.

by Bill Felmlee 2005-09-02 06:53PM | 0 recs
3 Or Nuthin.
I am a linguist, at present. I have a long past. I've conducted microwave spectrum analysis, running insanely expensive spectrum analysis gear on the very rooftop of the United Nations Building (you know, using Bessel functions & all). I was president of a largish incorporated hippie commune, and found myself having to evict restaurants and run "crisis clinics." I've worked on map studies for the Connecticut Highway Dept. of Rights of Way, studies that decided whose homes would be condemned. I've been around.

Just so you-all will know, the business of citing specific sources of data is vastly more subtle than the folks at colleges and universities generally bother to explain. For them, it is merely basic traing for what passes as good practice for them. Really, if you want to do extreme theory, you have to drastically refine such methodologies. A few statistics courses will definitely not cut it.

Pick up a book on, say, molecular biology, and you may find that the most rigorous research can often seem downright casual. Stuff that looks ultra-rigorous seldom is, really.

(Let me say that I am starting a forum on theoretical linguistics. It is not political, but I mention it as a service to those of you who might have the time and interest to take advantage of this open-source, freebee that I am offering. It's at:

http://login.prospero.com/dir-login/index.asp?webtag=thought_lang&lgnDST=http%3A%2F%2Fforums%2Ed elphiforums%2Ecom%2Fthought%5Flang%2Fstart
)

My big point here is that the employment of reference to "factual data" is deceptively subtle -- and in political discussion -- it is surpassingly subtle.

I have developed a general impression that forum rating systems, such as they are at present, are radically flawed. And I only rate stuff that I really appreciate at "3" -- I don't find it meaningful to give out any lower ratings.

You may have noticed that I strive to get folks to think "out of the box" as much as I can. It might get in the way of community at times, but it's been my observation that communities absolutely must get up off their duff and step out of their boxes, now and then.

Good bye Cruel World diaries have become an art form over at dkos. We really need to pick up the pace here at MyDD.

All kinds of wrong:
"And now I notice someone has created a diary in order to besmirch my otherwise stellar reputation."

Can somebody fill me in on this? It sounds like I missed a poor time.

Poor, poor, misunderstood, self-absorbed, arrogant MEtonym . . . Nobody understands her true brilliance but her, and now our refusal to bow down before her has finally driven her over the edge.

It's just. Not. Fair.

If only we had understood, when she was going from diary to diary telling everybody how great she was, how much we needed her.

If only we had fallen prostrate before her when she demanded our worship!

Now we are cursed -- cursed! -- to wander the wilderness until the end of time. The stones shall give us no purchase, nor the trees shade. The rivers shall dry up, and the cute cartoon animals give us the finger.

I can feel my vine withering already.

Alas! Alack! Horror! Trauma! Plaintitude!

(Sigh . . .)

Re: All kinds of wrong:
oh, that was me.  A little overboard, I admit.

I created a Diary to get a little more under his/her skin.  Metonym changed his/her Diary to "resignation" shortly afterward, I guess.

The title was Metonym: I want an end to this behaviour, and I want everyone to focus.

I deleted that Diary right after Menotym "resigned."  I figured I would take it down after an hour.  I think it was up for 20 minutes.

by Bill Felmlee 2005-09-02 09:07PM | 0 recs
F@ck!
I hate when I miss the good flip-outs. At least MEtonym didn't go all psycho and get herself deleted, or I'd have missed this, too . . .
by catastrophile 2005-09-02 10:57PM | 0 recs
I just want you to know
that I'm holding you personally responsible for this, Felmlee!

Imagine the amount of effort that's required to sustain that sort of pomposity from one moment to the next! Think of the strain she must be under!

Couldn't you just have taken some pity on her and found the damn link yourself? How dare you trouble your intellectual superiors with such petty inanities?

Really, dude, you keep this up and somebody's gonna take away your Flame War trophy.

F@ck!

by catastrophile 2005-09-02 11:05PM | 0 recs
Oh.
You did go find the link yourself.

Don't go, man
by v2aggie2 2005-09-02 09:19PM | 0 recs
Grow up dude
You are the biggest knuckle dragging ball baby I have ever seen. I would suggest you take back your trollish flame war ratings ASAP.

Do you really think that you want to take on everyone who made a comment in this diary in a ratings war? You are exhibiting extremely irrational judgment metronym. It would have been far better to just leave quietly.

by Gary Boatwright 2005-09-03 12:41AM | 0 recs
I think she's made it
abundantly clear that she doesn't want to take us on. She wants to tell us how to be, and she expects us to obey.

'Cause she's so f@cking special.

Adorable.

Re: I think she's made it
I'm serving notice on miholo's diary. If these troll ratings are not changed, I'm declaring war. This broad is out of control.
by Gary Boatwright 2005-09-03 04:47AM | 0 recs
Bah.
She made a fool of herself, had a temper tantrum, and rewrote this diary at least twice (it was "My Resignation" before she started calling for help from management). She's really past caring at this point. Trusted user status is the last thing on her mind -- she's got a dissertation to write. Probably on herself and how focused she is. Most likely she'll sign up under a different name next week.

I want to create a term for obnoxious self-promotion in her honor, though. How do you like meting?

Tonyng?

Nyming? Nah that doesn't work, looks too much like Nyberg.

Forgot to sleep again.

I mean really,
seriously, honestly -- like, this may sound glib or snarky or mean, but I don't intend it that way, I really want to know:How far up your ass does your head have to be to actually post these words and then expect to be taken seriously?

I'm sorry, that just cracks me up. If she hadn't convinced me she was serious, I'd have to give her mad "3"s just for the sheer comedy of it. It is really impressive.

by catastrophile 2005-09-03 05:20AM | 0 recs
Ratings
I see metonym went around rating everything with a 1 and cat came behind and geve em a 3 for good measure.  I actually enjoyed getting my first 1.  Thank you met.
by jrflorida 2005-09-03 01:12PM | 0 recs
Actually,
it was the other way around. I went through and gave everybody a "3" and then MEtonym countered. That was about the same time that she revised her diary and changed the title to "Chris, Jerome, Scott."

And now it appears that all her ratings have been removed. She couldn't have done this herself, so management must have intervened.

by catastrophile 2005-09-03 03:51PM | 0 recs
Re: Actually,
Ahh, well I think its better to give a 3 for fun than to give a 1 for spite.
by jrflorida 2005-09-03 04:19PM | 0 recs
Oops.
Cancel that last part. Her ratings are still there. I need more sleep.
