Stiffing FL & MI: Obama Strikes Again

Well, it seemed to good to be true and looks like it was:

David Axelrod, Obama's senior strategist, told reporters Tuesday that the campaign is reserving final judgment until a plan is offered. "But obviously there are concerns about a mail-in vote. I mean, there are concerns about eligibility, ballot security," he said during a conference call. "The state of Oregon has mail-in voting, and it took them more than a decade to perfect it to the point where they felt that they could run a statewide campaign through mail-in votes. And now we're going to turn this process over to parties within the states to run on with a matter of weeks to prepare."

It looks like the obstruction express is still in high gear. As has been discussed over the last several days, the Clinton camp has been pressuring the Obama camp to accept revotes. The Obama campaign has been stalling and trying to run out the clock, then deny the delegations in the credentials committee. Over the weekend Clinton surrogates Corzine & Rendell offered raise $15M to fund the revotes and this morning there were news reports that progress was being made for mail-in votes and that both campaigns agreed in principle. Now it is becoming clear that this was just another disingenuous ploy by Obama to appear reasonable while still trying to scuttle the revotes.

So the beat goes on...

The record is broken.

Obama Strikes Again

The record is getting worn pretty thin. Obama had better stop trying to disenfranchise the voters of Michigan and Florida before it becomes crystal clear that it is him who is trying to stiff them.

Re: Obama Strikes Again

I know, I mean Clinton was working hard to make sure this didn't happen right from the very start of the campaign....wait, that's not true. Ha, it's almost as if she only cares now b/c it might be politically expediant...

Re: Obama Strikes Again

People ask me why I'm flogging this issue so much. The thing that boils my blood here--and I really think IS the emerging story--is the pattern of hypocrisy by Obama. The Obama campaign repeatedly lately uses general comments that sound good, but are left deliberately open to interpretation. It is just like the garbage that we've been getting from the Bush administration for the last eight years. Whenever they say something you suspect there is something sneaky and wrong with it--that it is a deliberate attempt to mislead. I've had enough of being continually being mislead. We don't need another misleader.

Oh yeah, that, and if we stiff Florida and Michigan John McCain will win the presidency, we'll get three more "conservative" Supreme Court Justices, and my kids will grow up in a coutry I don't even want to think about.

Re: Obama Strikes Again

Obama is a hypocrite. For a politician acting holier than thou is the first example of a hypocrite. Need I go on...?

Re: Stiffing FL & MI: Obama Strikes Again

Isn't it interesting what's going on?

Just yesterday Obama and his supporters were saying they will abide by whatever the state parties and the DNC decide. Now that it seems they may have decided he suddenly has a problem.

by americanincanada 2008-03-11 03:34PM | 0 recs
they never say what they mean

what they really mean is that they will run out the clock unless they get an IA style primary.

Obama Strikes Again

Your not suggesting his words were just empty rhetoric...?

No, I guess they were lies.

It IS Interesting

Since you're against caucuses, i assume you're also against mail-in voting which discriminates against low-income voters, right?

Oh, and I also assume you were outraged when HILLARY agreed to abide by DNC rules and ignore the results in Florida and Michigan. Right? Right?

Re: It IS Interesting

I'm for a fair revote. What I want is for Florida and Michigan to be represented so they don't turn on the Democratic nominee in the general election.

Think I'm just blowing smoke. Here's what one Michigan resident thinks of being disenfranchised:

the arrogance is stunning

Florida is a throw away now, "Mr and Mrs. Sixpack" in Michigan will vote Democratic regardless of how the state is treated. Wow.

Let's walk through the path to disenfranchisement, shall we? Let's assume the Michigan/Florida problem is not settled in a way that actually includes the will of the voters in Michigan -- say they aren't seated at all or the delegates are split 50/50.

I'm a typical Michigan voter and this story has been on the front page of the two major papers on and off for months. I'm at risk of losing my job, my wife has lost hers, I'm surrouding by "for sale" signs in my neighbors' lawns, all the politicians out there seem all so concerned about the ECONOMY but no one seems to give a wet rat's ass what the people of Michigan think.

Am I going to listen to my union? Hell no, they helped get me into this mess. Jennifer Granholm? Kwame Kilpatrick? What has a Democrat done for me lately?

Now here comes the Democratic Convention. Oh look! The entire country matters except for the people in my state and Florida. Our chairs are essentially empty. Awesome how voters in Guam got a say in this but not me...because the Democrats in my state tried to push our agenda to the forefront and the party shut us down in favor of the will of New Hampshire. So much for post-convention bump.

Nobody needs to worry about my problems, the national press and the Democratic contender have made it clear I'll vote Democratic no matter how I'm crapped on.

Yeah, watch me.

Stop thinking purely Obama v. Clinton for one second and think about winning this election against John McCain in the fall. We are not going to do it without Michigan and Florida.

of course

it is to the Obama campaigns advantage to disenfranchise FL and MI.

by TeresaINPennsylvania 2008-03-11 03:34PM | 0 recs
Re: of course

Not if it throws the election to John McCain which is what it is going to do.

He is burning down the Democratic Party to get the nomination. I think that's something we all should take notice of.

Media, that's Setrak's attempt at sarcasm...

...at Clinton's expense, of course.

Re: of course

Clearly, you must have omitted the "S" before the "h" in SHE.

How can Obama be burning down the Dems when he is ahead in every category...categories the HRC camp FORMERLY professed as being important.

Obama Strikes Again

Problem is that he is backing himself into a corner. If it becomes too apparent that he is the obstructor, then it will hurt him enough amoung voters in these states that he will have no choice but to go for broke. It is a terrible strategy and the sooner he stops stalling the better it is for his chances in those states.

Imagine commercials against him saying that he's the one that tried to stiff them.

It's what makes me think he has adopted the go for broke strategy already. At some point he goes beyond the point of no return.

by MediaFreeze 2008-03-11 03:59PM | 0 recs
Absolutely.

Naturally. I agree with you. He and all of his advisers would be morons to not agree, and considering the campaign they've run- they're USUALLY not. People need to realize that holding a state-wide primary or caucus in a large state is not exactly simple(even with mail-in ballots, due to security needs). MI and FL would get seated when all is said and done, and Obama has a lot more to gain from revotes than by accepting the previous results. Obama also has been looking a lot towards November, and hasn't demonstrated much of a lack of foresight. It's redundant for there to be another "story" about this every single day.

by Setrak 2008-03-11 04:01PM | 0 recs
Really?

I think it needs to stay an upfront story until there are decisions made about how and when FL and MI vote. I also think we need to be paying attention to how both campaigns are responding -- or not responding.

by Soitgoes 2008-03-11 04:41PM | 0 recs

There will be a story about this every single day. I promise.

Re: Stiffing FL & MI: Obama Strikes Again

Florida has outlawed mail-in voting.

Are you counting on the Republican led Florida state legislature and executive to "bail us out" by rushing legislation to allow us to conduct a legal vote?

Good luck with all that.

Re: Stiffing FL; MI: Obama Strikes Again
Actually, they outlawed mail in primaries for an election, nomination or a recall.
This is a primary.
by skohayes 2008-03-11 04:38PM | 0 recs
Re: Stiffing FL; MI: Obama Strikes Again

Uh...isn't a primary a synonym for "nomination"?

Statute:

>>(2) The following elections may not be conducted by mail ballot:

(a) An election at which any candidate is nominated, elected, retained, or recalled; or<<

Aren't we picking our nominee?

Florida Democrats are expected to announce their plan tomorrow.

Re: Stiffing FL & MI: Obama Strikes Again

I think this will play badly in Obama's disfavor. The more they are seen as obstructing and disenfranchising voters the more the people will rebel.

by Fleaflicker 2008-03-11 05:55PM | 0 recs
Not Stalling.

You have yet to offer any evidence or data that actually shows the Obama's campaign has any influence on the state's submittal of plans.

You folks WANT to believe ANYTHING that makes it seem that the reasons for Hillary's fall have nothing to do with her own foibles and mistakes. You are going to drive yourselves crazy with this sort of endless delusional line of thinking. Really.
