The pub is within a mile of the Stamford Transportation Center, so if any MyDDers from NYC are interested in coming up, it's a really easy MetroNorth ride straight to Stamford, and a quick walk or cab ride to the pub!

What more could a political junkie want on a Saturday night?

Thanks for the reply.  We agree on the EC vending machines.  :-)  And I assume we agree on preventing unplanned pregnancies as much as possible.

But all the contraception and EC and good sex education and great health care in the world will never entirely eliminate the need for abortion.  Some women still will get pregnant unintentionally and will not want to carry pregnancies to term, for whatever reason is most important to their particular lives and circumstances.  In other cases, some women may have to terminate much-wanted pregnancies for health reasons.  The "abortion is always bad" framing adds an unnecessary and unhealthy societal shame to those circumstances and  feeds into a mindset which is contributing to the lack of access to abortion care for women around the country, which endangers women's lives and health.

Abortions are most decidedly NOT bad for everyone.  If they were bad for everyone, no one would have abortions.

You can argue that unwanted pregnancy is bad, sure.    But many, many people will dispute your claim that abortions are bad, always bad, for everyone.

I don't understand why anyone has to use the labels "bad" or "good" for abortion, anyway.  The fact is, abortions are necessary sometimes.  They're a medical procedure that is often best for a woman's health.

I'm enthusiastic about any legislation that increases funding for contraception and medically accurate sex education.

However, the fact that we have to proclaim "IT REDUCES ABORTIONS, WHICH ARE BAD BAD BAD!" in order to achieve this is really pathetic.

  • When I had insurance, I got the same medications every month for my allergies.  Unless a different treatment for debilitating allergies comes along, I'll always take them, and it's the same cost every month.  My your logic, health insurance shouldn't cover these either?

I will never support a candidate who pulls a Lieberman: selling out his/her entire party as "soft on terrorism" for personal gain.

The primaries are going to be rough and tumble, and all of the candidates are going to have to fight hard to win the nomination, but I think we have to draw the line and NOT reward any candidate who is going to adopt Liebermanesque talking points.

  • Well, not Lieberman, but close enough.  His former anonymous blogger and paid attack monkey, Dan Gerstein, got himself on TV today by attacking bloggers and Edwards.

Still waiting for Dan Gerstein to explain the $387,000 in street money petty cash his campaign put on the street during the election.

Still waiting for Dan Gerstein to apologize for accusing Lamont and Lamont bloggers for hacking the Lieberman web site.

Still waiting...but Gerstein, former blogger for Lieberman before Liebermann brought him on staff as spokesperson after he anonymously accused Lamont supporters of anti-Semitism, has plenty of time to bloviate about how mean bloggers are!

The "ourselves alone" sentiment definitely strikes a nerve.  So many people of New Orleans must truly feel alone still, abandoned.  It's amazing to me that New Orleans wasn't more of a national campaign issue this year...we've just moved on to the next fascinating story, which disgustingly seems to be Brittney Spears' divorce.

So if you're going to throw out potentially incendiary Irish terms, I'll just toss this one on the pile to the people of New Orleans: Tiocfaidh ár lá.

Like Sinn Fein, it's come to be associated with the militant Irish republican movement, but the literal meaning is this:  Our Day Will Come.  It was used a lot by peaceful Irish civil rights activists in the early 70's, around the same time that nonviolent marchers in the North of Ireland also took up singing "We Shall Overcome".

Tiocfaidh ár lá, New Orleans.  Your day will come.

Thanks to all the local bloggers in New Orleans and to national bloggers who are helping to amplify their story and remind us not to forget.

I just got home from the Norwalk office myself.  I really wish I could have gotten away for the blogger gatherings on Saturday and tonight, but there was just too much work to do.  I get really worried about the premature celebrating.  In fact, my crazy Catholic guilt told me this morning that the Q-poll momentum change was entirely my fault, having single-handedly jinxed Ned Lamont by going to Sullivan's on Sunday night, having two pints, and allowing myself to enjoy the feeling of a potential win for just two hours (rather than working).

We could lose.  We could win.  I don't know, and I've been on the ground for a long time here.  I think it is much closer than the July 20 q-poll and I found all of the out-of-state blogger speculation about a possible landslide to be absolutely torturous.

I do know that if we do lose, it won't be because of bloggers.  It'll be because of the most basic campaign mistake in the world - not ID'ing enough 1's.  Period.

If we win, it will be a triumph of HOPE more than anything else -- an amazing group of individuals who had the audacity to HOPE against all odds, predictions, and warnings, and a candidate, campaign team, grassroots volunteer crew, 15,000+ grassroots donors, and, yes, a ragtag group of bloggers here in Connecticut and around the country who channeled that audacious hope into tangible and courageous action.

I'm in awe of all of us.  :-)

Still, I really want to fucking win.  In three hours I'll be standing outside my polling place ready to be the first voter to cast a vote for Ned Lamont, and then I'll be spending every minute until the polls close doing what I can do bring in votes for Ned.

Hope over fear.  Hope into action.  Action into victory.

I do not support Lieberman in this primary race, but I have to say I found every part of that answer to be really offensive.

  • Good for you.  I will do the same.  We're all supposed to be on the same side on August 9, even if the leaders of your campaign have forgotten that.

  • No worries - we had people watching the float the whole time.  The cops were there and did a REALLY great job of diffusing the general obnoxiousness of some of the LieberKidz.

  • The Lobbyist and the LieberKidz decided to waste the time they could have used to call voters all night tonight by coming to Lamont's rally to disrupt things.

Spazeboy, CTBob, and others have lots of photos and video.

Apparently Lieberman's Favorite Lobbyist went apoplectic at one point, and Lamont volunteers got it all on tape.

What a hoot!  It's actually pretty sad that they had to send so many staffers over to what should have been a really nice event.  After 18 years, it's come to these desperate embarrassing stunts for Joe Liebeman.
