Hillary outpolled McCain among NH Independents

Just saw a fascinating diary by our Silver Spring over at Daily Kos:

The key stat:
Number of independent votes that McCain won: 33,063
Number of independent votes that Clinton won: 40,111

Haven't seen too many articles in the press about how New Hampshire independents just LOVE Hillary Clinton!!

It was more the press that piled on Clinton. Obama actually handled it very well when he was asked about Clinton's Teary Moment.

Well, the "transformation" I see now...

Was the transformation of old, wrongly held opinions of Hillary being "too polarizing" or "too staus quo" or "not able to win" last night. I mean, she wasn't "supposed" to win... But obviously, the working women of New Hampshire wanted to say otherwise! If anything "transformative" this election year, it's the sudden excitement of women of all walks of life throughout this nation at the real chance of putting a fantastic woman in the White House this year... AS OUR PRESIDENT!! :-)

2.5 point margin = Ass Kicking?

Based on polls taken two weeks prior to the NH primary, this would have been seen as a symbolic victory for Obama. Only the polls taken a few days before the primary (inflated by the Iowa result) led to expectations that he would win easily.

No, she did not kick his ass, not even close.

She beat him by 7,000 votes among independents.
An a**kicking? Probably not, but still a sizable win.

She Beat McCain Among Independents Not Obama

Obama won the most independents. Hilary won the overall primary by having a larger plurality among registered dems.

she took the independents by large numbers. That was supposed to be his strength. Yah, it was pretty much an ass kicking considering polls said he was going to win by double digits. He thought he was going to win by double digits and the media had been raving about his surge for weeks. You can't go back and rewrite history. It was supposed to be an Obama blow out. He blew it and she kicked his ass.

Yes Very Wrong!

Once again, Obama won the independents (Clinton finished ahead of McCain not Obama among them) and a 2.5 percent loss would have been hailed as a symbolic victory for Obama based on over 90% of the polls taken in the state throughout the campaign.

Go figure.

You Clinton people need some perspective. You say "she kicked his ass" and yet his margin of victory was three times greater over hers in Iowa. She won by 3 percent. He beat her by nine percent in Iowa.

If Hillary is nominated, we might as well start looking to 2012. She's going to lose to McCain, probably in a landslide.

Comparing the margin of victory of a caucus vs. a primary is comparing apples and oranges. We have no idea what the actual preferences were among caucus goers. We only know the caucus results. If the caucus didn't have the 15% viability rule, the percentages for each candidate would be different.

The fact that Obama outpolled both of them is totally irrelevant if the people didn't actually show up on election day and vote that way.

Independents showed up and voted for Obama more than any other candidate in either party--just what are you saying in your post?

If you are speculating that they wouldn't actually show up on the general election day to vote for Obama, how do you know they would show up for either of the other candidates either?

I was under the impression that independents did not show up to vote in NH as expected (according to the polls). Basically, my point is that it doesn't matter who outpolls who, the only thing that matters is who shows up on election day and votes.

By "Outpolled" I meant got more votes. Obama got the most votes among independents, then Hillary, and then McCain. Everybody expected Obama to get a lot of votes from Indepedents. But I never read anybody who suggested that Hillary was more competetive with independents than McCain was. I'll take that as an excellent sign for the general election.

I'm fine with that

It's great that both dems outpolled McCain among independents, both by sizeable margins. That certainly bodes well for the GE, but since dems can be counted on to vote for the eventual nominee anyway, the fact that Obama won them, and came within three points of winning the primary overall when he was behind by double digits within the last two weeks, lends strength to the argument that he would be the best GE candidate.
