McCain: "Barack's 'The One', but Ready to Lead?"

Cross-posted at Truth About McCain.

In the above YouTube video, focused entirely on Barack Obama and the religious subtext to his political message, John McCain concedes, "Barack Obama: He may be the One.  But is he ready to lead."

It seems to me that in this ad John McCain falls into the trap of repeating and popularizing his opponents' best lines for the purpose of vaguely trying to punch holes in them.

America is a very religious country, with ninety percent of people saying they believe in God.  So a candidate who says that he feels a mission to lead and has been chosen to do so may have a much better chance than another candidate who ridicules the religous content of his opponent's mission, without offering any religious content of his own.

John McCain's slogan is, "Barack Obama:  He may be "The One", but is he ready to lead?" If American decides that Obama is more ready to lead than McCain, then McCain's McCain may find that it is essentially over.

Religious people take leaps of faith, and "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen."  If McCain's campaign depends on convincing religious people not to have faith, that makes him a negative naysaying tool of doom rather than the man to lift up the nation in troubled times.

Obama has deftly manipulated McCain into the role of doubting the power not only of hope, but also the power of faith.  He's turnng McCain into the John Kerry of the 2004 election, with Obama taking the mantle of hope and faith and McCain doubting their power in the face of a faithfully-oriented nation.

The video ends with Charlton Heston playing Moses, parting the Red Sea, which is one of the most popular movies among white people. Regardless of the reason, will McCain benefit from ridiculing that image and essentially doubting its underlying religious message?  I don't think so.

If McCain is trying to use this as a wedge issue to separate atheists from Obama, it is unlikely to succeed, since atheists have so many other reasons to despise McCain.

Althogh McCain has many other more potent cards in his deck, arguing that "the Chosen One" is not ready to lead, is like saying, "Moses can part the Read Sea, but is he ready to lead?" Good luck with that line of argument in your local church.

Can John McCain Make It . . . Again?

Cross-posted at the Truth About McCain blog.

John Sydney McCain III (hereinafter "JiSM"), Yahoo News reports, has had skin McCancer three times, (hey, talking about JiSM makes me tasteless) and gets check-ups in Nevada every three months to make sure the cancer hasn't come back.  In fact, he was in Nevada today to have a

small patch of skin removed from his face and biopsied as part of a regular checkup with his dermatologist.  ( . . . )  The fair-skinned Arizona senator, who suffered severe sun damage from his 5 1/2 years in Vietnamese prison camps, gets an in-depth skin cancer check every few months because of a medical history of dangerous melanomas." Yahoo News

The New York Times said Sunday,

"Along with his signature bright white hair, the most striking aspects of Senator John McCain's physical appearance are his puffy left cheek and the scar that runs down the back of his neck. New York Times

We all are aware of the normal actuarial risks of being seventy-two years old now, and seventy-six years old when and if his first term expired before he did.  However, if elected JiSM would treat the public to a "does he have cancer or doesn't he" check-up every three months.  In fact, he'll be getting another check-up like this around November 28.

Everyone's days are numbered, but John McCain's days are more numbered than most everyone else's.  Shouldn't we know what his November 28th 2008 check-up will say before we risk electing him president on November 4?

Black Blogger Attacks Obama Premise at CNN

See Author's Credibility Rating (ACR) in the endnotes.

Cross-posted as a comment at BlackPerspective.Net and at the Francis L. Holland Blog..

Yobachi is Right, but So What?

Because of the attention it got from CNN, and my duty to archive a notice of it at AfroSpear in the News, I am just now reading an article posted by D. Yobachi Boswell at the AfroSpear's BlackPerspective.Net blog on January 8, 2008 in which Yobachi challenges a central premise of the Obama candidacy as it respects the condition of Black people in America. (Yobachi and I are also coordinators of the Afrosphere Action Coalition, along with Purple Zoe.)

In his January article, cited by CNN on July 22, Yobachi had the courage to pose some questions that many other Blacks were surely thinking without saying, publicly pursuing an argument that I had in private with many Black bloggers over the question of the value of ending the 43-term white male monopoly of the presidency. Yobachi wrote back on January 8:

Simply having individual Black people get positions is no longer nearly good enough; that's not the ideal that I cherish. If we have a Black president, but Black people are still charged more for bank loans just for being Black, what difference does it make?

If we have a Black president, but are still herded into prison at extremely higher rate than whites who commit the same crime, then what difference does it make?

We need fundamental change, not just Negroes in high places. We need to stop being mystified by individual figureheads. BlackPerspective.Net

Here, I have to agree with Yobachi. There are plenty of Black presidents in Africa where parts of the Diaspora live in the deepest of misery. For me, electing a Black president is not a end in itself, but is a part of establishing that simply having brown skin must not and should not exclude Black people from any role in America, regardless of what it is. Simply having brown skin must not preclude us from serving as president; it shouldn't mean that we are automatically charged more for cars and car loans; and it shouldn't mean that we are herded into prison at rates six times that of white men.

However, the same question being asked by Yobachi of the presidency could be posed with respect to the local gabargemen's union: What is the point of hiring the first Black garbagemen if it can't be demonstrated that doing so will reduce the interest rate we pay on car loans and the rate at which we go to prison?

The truth is that there is no single job in America that a Black man or woman can get that will, in and of itself, end the American culture and politics of systemic denigration, subugation and exploitation of Black people based on the color of our skin. And yet, if we don't compel America to elect its first Black garbagemen, then each of those men will be out of a job.

If we don't compel American to elect its first Black city councilwomen and school committee women, then those women and their communities will be less able to shape the education that their children receive. Electing them does not fundamentally change the system, but it may help to fundamentally improve the education that a few children receive, or at least will give a few Black people jobs on the city council that otherwise would have been unavailable to them.

Obama Succeeding Brilliantly on Foreign Trip, vs. McCain

See Author Credibility Rating at the end of this article.

Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama, it seems to me, is making all of the right foreign policy moves his trip overseas.  I take particular note of the following passage, found at Yahoo News:

PARIS - Democrat Barack Obama said Friday that Iran should promptly accept an international call to freeze its uranium enrichment program, which some nations see as a potential step toward obtaining nuclear weapons, and not wait for the next U.S. president.

The presidential candidate met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris, where they discussed Iran, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, climate change and other issues.

Speaking later at a news conference, Obama said Iran should accept the proposals made by Sarkozy and other Western leaders. He urged Iran's leaders not to wait for the next U.S. president to push them "because the pressure, I think, is only going to build." Yahoo News

Recently, John McCain and other anti-Obama forces (e.g. here) were able to convince the mainstream media to report that European leaders were afraid that Obama would not pursue an Iran diplomacy consistently strict with what Europe has been doing.

By meeting with Sarkozy and promising that "the pressure, I think ,is only going to increase", Obama is promising to apply even more pressure than the Bush Administration has, but within the framework set out by the Europeans, which does not include going to war with Iran.

Stop Pre-Trial, Extra-Judicial Executions

Dear bloggers:

RE: Widget Action:  "End Police Pre-Trial, Extra-Judicial Electrocutions and Executions" (Tasering)

Please consider placing one of these anti-taser widgets (various sizes available) at your blog, in preparation for a day of blogging against police pre-trial,
extra-judicial electrocution and execution of members of the public.

The widgets lead readers to a new "Electrocuted While Black" blog
(by African American Political Pundit and me), where we will link to all of the blogs that have notified us by e-mail that they have joined the anti-electrocution (taser) campaign by adopting one of these widgets.

Subsequently, the Afrosphere Action Coalition (AAC) will call for a day of blogging on the issue, and then issue a press release
including the names and links of the participating afrosphere blogs.

In spite of police claims that electrocuting Blacks and other members of the public is necessary and normally harmles, research reveals that 600 pound bears and
one thousand pound moose are often treated by game wardens with greater care for their wellbeing and integrity than are members of the public when confronted by police officers armed with electrocution/execution devices.

The Indictment of XXXXX XXXXX By Justice and History

Cross-posted at XXXXXXXXXX

Having discovered that XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, (XXXXxxxx and XXXXXX of XXXXXXXXXXXXX) has a long history of participation in and support of the XXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXX and, moreover, trained or worked or "interviewed"with the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX in 200X, now research into the life and history of XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX has revealed and established the following facts and, therefore, justice and history now bring this thirty-one count indictment of XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

1).XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX was active for six months at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX offices in Washington, DC in 200X, with or without pay.  (XXXXX carefully to XXXXXXXX's speech to the XXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXXXX, on June XXXXXXXX, XXXXXX.) Therefore, nothing that he, XXXXXXXXXXXX say can be accepted at face value.

3). XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX has used at least three aliases, including XXXXXX  XXXXXXXXX, and XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX and XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX and XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. No one seems to know XXXXXXXXX's complete name with certainty, but it certainly is not what he has said it is.

4). XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX lied when he said "I don't have money.  I don't come from a famous or powerful family.  I was an XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX." XXXXXXXXXX   XXXXXXXXXXXXXX Counter to the rags to riches XXXXXXXXXX story XXXXXXXXXXXX has conveniently adopted recently for public consumption, XXXXXXXX has said that he can and does "always close the door" on XXXXXXXXXXXXXX identity "in detached selfishness."

6). XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX  XX is not a "liberal" and he is not a "progressive." In an essay submitted to the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX University campus newspaper, the XXXXXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXXX strenuously opposed ALL XXXXXXXXX by XXXXXX in the US XXXXXX, a position more extremely Republican and discriminatory than that taken by many other military members and conservatives.  XXXXXXXX  XXXXXXXXX

7). Like David Duke and the Klu Klux Klan, XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX promotes "states rights," a codeword for opposition to integration and determined acts and policies of segregation.  Is XXXXXXXX a White Supremacist Group?

8). XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXX has told the media, without naming her, that his mother "returned to XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXX several years ago to run a XXXXXX." XXXXXXXXXXXX Gate

9). In fact, XXXXXXXXXXXXXX family owns a sumptuous and "exclusive" resort hotel and tourism conglomerate in XXXXXXXXXXXXXX called the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX a unit of which is theXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

13).  XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, the man listed in public documents as the XXXXXXXXXXXX of the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, is also president of the "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX" of the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, the national XXXXXX board of XXXXXXXXXXXXX. In addition, he is a member of the member of the "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX" of the XXXXXXXXXXX (System for Integration of XXXXXXXXXXXXXX).

Will Netroots Nation Be Virtually All-White Again?

I've heard that, in contrast to last year's YearlyKos, this year's Netroots Nation was making a special effort to reach out to diverse parts of the Democratic Party, instead of having a virtually all-white conference again.

"A Diversity of Opinion, if Not Opinionators:
At the Yearly Kos Bloggers' Convention, a Sea of Middle-Aged White Males"

By Jose Antonio Vargas
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, August 6, 2007; C01

In that article, the conference organizer, Gina Cooper was quoted as saying, "I hate using the word 'diversity.'

Apparently, she also hates using the word "black", because I searched the entire Netroots Nation website and I can't find a single instance of the use of that word to mean that color group of people that makes up 20% of the Democratic Party.  I'm not saying the word isn't there somewhere, but check it out for yourself, using the search function, and see if you can find it!  See if you can find us

This actually represents a regression relative to 2007, when the word "black" was used once, in a description of Alexis McGill, who "She has written and taught primarily on urban secession, black youth political participation and organizing the hip-hop generation. She received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University."

So, I searched for the word "African, but every mention of the word "African" is from the 2007 program, with none from 2008.

Can Whites Support the Dems in 2008 As Much as Blacks?

Adam Serwer of the National Public Broadcasting System (PBS) has written an important piece of afrosphere history about Black bloggers demands to be included in the state blog corps that will cover  the 2008 Democratic National Convention.  He quoted or cited and linked a number of members of the afrosphere, including L.N. Rock (African American Political Pundit), Pam Spaulding (PamsHouseBlend), Gina McCauley (What About Our Daughters?), Oliver Willis, Liza Sabater (of Culture Kitchen) and the Francis L. Holland Blog.

One aspect of the article I found very interesting was the juxtaposition between the Black bloggers demanding inclusion and the opinion of Markos C.A. Moulitsas Zúñiga, asserting that we are not included because we don't deserve to be included:

Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, who founded the popular liberal blog DailyKos, rebuffs bloggers who allege the meeting deliberately excluded bloggers of color, describing the blogosphere as "about as close to a meritocracy as you can get," adding "while there are accomplished bloggers of color in the netroots ... too many bloggers are quick to use their sex or race to demand access that they may not necessarily merit based on what they've built." Moulitsas, who is Latino, declined an invitation to the Clinton meeting.  PBS.ORG
This portends a struggle that will become increasingly obvious to Black bloggers and to the mainstream white media, between Black blogs and our readers demanding our inclusion, while white bloggers like big (white) dog of the whitosphere, Moulitsas Zúñiga, offer excuse after excuse why Blacks need not and should not be included at all.

This will play itself out at the Democratic National Convention as well as in the staffing of the Obama campaign and the Obama Administration that will be inaugurated next January.  Are Blacks to be excluded because whites are better than us (according to white criteria as applied by white judges),  or are Blacks to be included because we are 20% of the Democratic Party, we aare more loyal Democrats than are whites, and we refuse to allow ourselves to excluded?

Remember my definition of the "white male supremacy paradigm":

White male supremacy is the conviction that white males, no matter how much and how often they fail, are still inherently superior to women and Blacks, no matter how much and how often we succeed.

More than half of whites voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004, while 90% of Blacks voted against him.  So all of the whiteroots new-media "progressive" liberal  efforts to convince the white public are trying desperately to achieve half the level of commitment to the Democratic Party that Blacks have maintained consistently at least since 1968.  White progressives fail over and over again, and yet they think they have achieved more than Blacks have.

DNC Convention in Chaos, says NYT

According to information in New York Times story today, Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean has to be a major-league incompetent to have messed up the organization of the August Convention to this extent:

With the Denver convention less than two months away, problems range from the serious -- upwardly spiraling costs on key contracts still being negotiated -- to the mundane, like the reluctance of local caterers to participate because of stringent rules on what delegates will be eating, down to the color of the food. At last count, plans to renovate the inside of the Pepsi Center for the Democrats are $6 million over budget, which may force convention planners to scale back on their original design or increase their fund-raising goals.

The convention is being organized by the Democratic National Committee, which is run by Howard Dean, with his chief of staff, the Rev. Leah D. Daughtry, leading the effort. Only in the last month has the Obama campaign been able to take over management of the convention planning with the candidate claiming the nomination, and his aides are increasingly frustrated, as the event nears, at organizers who they believe spent too freely, planned too slowly and underestimated actual costs.

( . . . )

And then there is the food: A 28-page contract requested by Denver organizers that caterers provide food in "at least three of the following five colors: red, green, yellow, blue/purple and white." Garnishes could not be counted toward the colors. No fried foods would be allowed. Organic and locally grown foods were mandated, and each plate had to be 50 percent fruits and vegetables. As a result, caterers are shying away.  New York Times

Barack Obama is already taking over some essential decisions, like deciding to give his acceptance speech at an arena three times the size of the one chosen by the DNC.  In similar situations, I haven't had the balls to just sideline everyone who's contributing to the chaos and start from scratch.  But, that's what Barack Obama needs to do, and he needs to do it quickly.

He's not responsible for the chaos that reigned before he won the nomination, but everyone will hold him responsible for the Convention itself.  Like a general taking over a battlefield strategy, Obama needs to arrive, put his people in the essential roles, and announce a plan that can win the battle.  He has to do so in a way that leaves incompetent and impractical people feeling special about the contribution they've made.
