Remembrance of things past CARTOON

Photobucket

Just discovered this cartoon from the site of the Council of the National Interest Foundation. Just replace Bush in the cartoon with Obama, and everything falls into place. It pretty much sums up the causes of the recent impasse in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Obama's backtracking from Cairo, and the administration's cave in on the settlements issue. Netanyahu won.

The peace process is for all practical purposes, dead.  The occupation, colonialism, and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their lands and property will continue as before under Netanyahu's leadership.

Re: Remembrance of things just past CARTOON

Here's an interesting article on Obama's backtracking:

Obama seems complicit in Netanyahu's scary obstructionism

Haaretz: Washington is disappointed in Netanyahu. Yes, then why did you meet with him?

The White House expressed disappointment in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's recent visit to Washington, with officials saying that they had hoped that the prime minister would present a concrete plan to scale back Israeli construction in West Bank settlements, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner condemns the ongoing colonization of the West Bank-as Obama fails to do-and says that Israelis have lost their interest in seeking peace, it's all about conflict management:

"What really hurts me, and this shocks us, is that before there used to be a great peace movement in Israel. There was a left that made itself heard and a real desire for peace," Kouchner said.

"It seems to me, and I hope that I am completely wrong, that this desire has completely vanished, as though people no longer believe in it," he added.

Conflict management? Someone must be reading Jeff Halper's stuff as he offered the term a few years ago to describe where Israel is going with this thing.

Re: Remembrance of things just past CARTOON

Rahm Emanuel speaking on the Charlie Rose Show recently, quoted by Mondoweiss:

"They live side by side. You can't want this more than they want it. They have a responsibility to their people if they want to make peace and have a two-state solution that's based on the principles of past Israeli governments and past American presidents regardless of party have endorsed, as have past Palestinian leaders. They have a responsibility. We don't have -- we can't want this more than they want it."

Commentary:

"Well, these words from Emanuel are a total cop-out. It means that he is advising Obama not to appear (and therefore, not to be) "pro-active." No hope without the U.S. on the scene but they've already found the rhetorical formula to justify backing away."

Re: Remembrance of things just past CARTOON

There is actually an organization called End The Occupation which today sent around this email.

Stop Settlements! Boycott and Divest from Settlement Supporters!

As it becomes increasingly clear that our government isn't going to take real action to stop Israel's settlement projects in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, we must step up our individual actions to end these abominations.  This November, there are several ways to take action against settlements, including organizing around the Hang Up On Motorola boycott, striking out the Hebron Fund at the Met's Citi Field, and convening in Amherst, MA for a national campus boycott, divestment & sanctions (BDS) conference.
