Heart condemns McCain-Palin's unauthorized use of 'Barracuda'

Cross posted at C4O

The Wilson sisters from the 70s and 80s music sensation group Heart condemned McCain-Palin campaign's unauthorized use of the song "Barracuda" at the Republican convention. The campaign was playing up the high school nickname of Sarah Palin as Sarah the Barracuda to spotlight her Alaskan fighting spirit . However this apparently didn't go down well with the Wilson sisters. Nancy Wilson (one of the Wilson sisters from the Heart group) issued an email yesterday afternoon asking the campaign to desist from unauthorized usage of the song.

But after McCain finished his speech accepting the GOP's presidential nomination tonight, Palin joined him on stage, and the song was used again: Heart's "Barracuda" played as balloons fell. With that elephant in the room, Heart's Nancy Wilson felt compelled to personally respond. "I think it's completely unfair to be so misrepresented," she said in a phone call to EW.com after the speech. "I feel completely f---ed over."

She and sister Ann Wilson then emailed the following exclusive statement:

"Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."

McCain-Palin campaign had been served with a cease and desist notice by Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG.

Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart said Thursday night that Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG have sent a cease and desist notice to the McCain-Palin campaign over their use of 'Barracuda.'

"We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored," the group said in a statement that said they "condemn" the use of the song at the Republican convention.

Re: Heart condemns McCain-Palin's unauthorized use

do ANY campaigns secure permission to use songs?? This should be an all or none proposition in my mind. Either everyone needs to pay for use or receive wavers or noone should be served a cease-desist order.

this is a non-political comment: who knows maybe SOMEDAY a winger band will have the greatest song for one of our candidates, and I don't want that band inserting themselves into the campaign

Yes

For example, Bruce Springstein has given permission for Obama to use his songs.

Anyway, the owners of songs have a right to say how they're used (and also to collect royalties from public use).

I remember Bruce not being too happy

with Reagan's misappropriation of Born in USA...

by louisprandtl 2008-09-05 07:57AM | 0 recs
No, not happy at all

I would be happy if Republicans were reduced to musak and Ted Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever."

by Dracomicron 2008-09-05 10:45AM | 0 recs
Ted Nugent with his NRA crap drove himself

nuts...

Re: Heart condemns

I found it ironic that the republicans used that as Sarah's song last night.

These people not only are dense, they can't even be bothered to read the lyrics.  I heard that song come on, and do they even know that this song is a negative one?

Oh wait, it has a ROCKIN' beat.  That is good enough

Re: Heart condemns

It's like Republicans using "Born in the USA" as a song for pro-American sentiment when in fact it's a jab in the face about the Vietnam War and the effects of it on the soldiers and society.

by applejackking 2008-09-05 03:40AM | 0 recs
I know...

Don't they understand the meaning behind the lyrics? Oh yes, that's right... The GOP EMBODIES it.

Re: Heart condemns McCain-Palin's unauthorized use

Soulless, corporate nature of the music business? Hmm... soulless, corporate nature of the Republican party. Sort of sums up everything we saw this week during their convention.

I wonder if they are aware

That the song is owned by the company not the artists

Wow, it is the silly season...

Ann and Nancy Wilson should STFU and appreciate the fact that their music is getting airplay anywhere.  This is the kind of stuff that really annoys me no matter what side of the political spectrum it comes from.

Seriously, if "Heart" wants to be ideologically pure, why not put in a proviso in iTunes that asks for political affiliation before allowing anyone to purchase their music?  Answer: Because they won't let politics get in the way of making money.  So get real, Wilson sisters.  Millions of people heard your tune, and I would venture that more than a few said "Hey, I remember that song.  I might just download it".  Let's see if they return those dollars because they came from Republicans.  Don't hold your breath.

So, they've made their obligatory "We don't want our song used!"  But, you can bet they don't mind the sales increases.  Hypocrisy?  You make the call.

Right

Heart doesn't need RNC airplay to sell their classic song.

Re: Right

that was easy.

Well, yeah.

In twenty years, McCain/Palin will probably just be a footnote in history.  Heart's "Barracuda" will still be classic rock with airplay every day on radio stations and whatever we're using instead of iPods (dermal music implants?).

Re: Wow, it is the silly season...

I'm a recording artist, so forgive me if I take what you're saying personally.  Your idea that you can randomly appropriate my work to further a political cause (or your burger joint, or whatever) sickens me.  I made it, I have rights pertaining to it, and IT'S MINE.  I get to choose - not you.

That said, I give away music, and send it to radio stations to broadcast, etc. etc.  I'm sure their label does that, too.  It's not a lack of ideological purity.  The difference is that when the RNC or Sears uses a song, they're doing it to promote themselves, fundraise, or make money in other ways.  I didn't work my ass off for decades so that some lame corporation can use my stuff to shill temselves without them compensating me.

And in the spirit of giving, here's some music.

Re: Heart condemns McCain-Palin's

Why do Republicans always make this mistake?   Someone else got caught doing this recently.  Don't they know there are laws?  Are they so dumb as to think that someone won't say something.

God forbid they ever use a Stone's tune without permission.  Those guys don't mess around.   Keith Richards would own the RNC when his lawyers were through.

Thank you, Heart

When they started playing that, I shouted, "No, you don't get 'Barracuda,' you monsters!"

The neighbors must've thought I was crazy.

Re: Thank you, Heart

Just remember, a (supposedly) tough, no-nonsense, self-described "pitbull with lipstick" is a beloved "barracuda" if she's a republican.

She's just a "bitch" if she's not.

Yeah

I just keep thinking that Michelle Bachmann is delerious with envy.  Maybe if she hunts more, pushes Creationism in public schools more, and forcefully prevents women from getting abortions with her bare hands, God will speak through her husband and give her a cool hardcore nickname like Palin has.

Re: Yeah

I'd already start drafting the cease-and-desist letter if I were Bachman Turner Overdrive's attorney.

Or, for that matter, Patsy Cline's.

Re: Heart condemns McCain-Palin's unauthorized use

Speaking of proper licensing, does anyone else love that "Rejoice with the van gods" commercial that features Barracuda?

by Johnny Gentle Famous Crooner 2008-09-05 06:19AM | 0 recs
My bloodpressure goes down every time

When that commercial comes on, it makes me relaxed and happy for a few seconds.  Brilliant advertising.

Maybe Heart can come out of retirement

and make a new Barracuda video, featuring the GOP as the villains.

by activatedbybush 2008-09-05 06:24AM | 0 recs
Heh.

Maybe Hart will be okay with them using "Monkey Business".

;)

Re: Heart condemn

Conventions involve both fundraising and rebroadcast, so there are some real damages here.

Yeah, they could loop 15", and I wouldn't be surprised if they go ahead and do that.

Re: Heart condemn

Republicans, networks are just reporting news, which is fair use.

by reenactor 2008-09-05 11:05AM | 0 recs
Hmm

Bush used "Still the One" by Orleans in 2004 before being stopped by John Hall, a member of the band.  John Hall went on to win a seat in Congress has a Democrat in 2006.

Maybe they'll start a pattern.  Congresswoman Ann Wilson?  Congresswoman Nancy Wilson?

Go Wilson sisters....

Knew them in my days in the Seattle Recording Scene back when the used to cover Led Zepplin tunes at Parkers ballroom.

Yeah, as someone commented, someone SHOULD point out what the songs mean to the RNC before the use them.

Of course, I have always thought "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath should be the RNC theme song anyway....

Since when did Republicans care about

the actual meaning of the songs???
