Clark's support seems to be mostly residual from the 2004 campaign rather than anything he's done recently.  His netroots support reminds me a lot of Lieberman's support in national polls early in the presidential cycle (which was residual from his VP run).

That's not to say Clark is necesarrily got net joementum fatalis.  He's got plenty of time to reverse the slide.

    Btw, I voted for Feingold.

Amen.  The only thing that pays worse than campaign work is being a congressional staffer.

As and aside, Democrats are losing talent as most of the best and brightest go work in the private sector or law school, a situation which isn't as bad as it is Republicans who have their huge think tank apparatus.

Connecticut is a machine Democratic state, part of the band of coastal states from Maryland to Massachusetts that are dominated by a closed political apparatus and an expensive media market.

Maryland?  You're kidding right?  Maryland Democrats may predominate but usually pretty much everything is a free for all.  No one really has any machines anymore.  Lots of individual followings but hardly anything resembling a machine.

We do have an expensive media market though.

The DNC is putting field organizers (who are gathering volunteers, gathering voter data, and helping coordinate local committees) in all 50 states.  Now once the primaries happen, there should be an infrastructure in place for nominees to take advantage of.

And some states are getting more than field organizers.  Some state party's (like Alaska) couldn't even afford a communications director before the DNC came along to help.

These local organizers aren't doing anything remotely involved with picking candidates in the primary.  They've got more important things to do.

  • comment on a post CA - Ballot Measures are in trouble over 6 years ago
That most political science literature studying ballot initiatives in CA has found that most need to be winning in the polls by over 55% because most sound good in the abstract and when they learn more about it (the side of the story thats not printed in the question) voters tend to swing against it.

So this is indeed bad news for Arnold.

  • Republicans are unpopular but no one likes the Dems either bull crap.  I'm not going to hild my breath though.

  • on a comment on Mfume shafted by MD Dems over 6 years ago
Precisely, what I'm saying is that if you want to blame people for stopping Mfume, don't blame the Maryland Democratic Party.  Even Mfume has said Lierman has been nothing but fair.

Now if you want to blame particular MD Democrats, that's your perogative.

  • comment on a post Mfume shafted by MD Dems over 6 years ago
But its not the Maryland Democratic Party.  State party chair Terry Lierman has kept the state party neutral and has repeadly praised all candidates.  In fact, there's a link to both Cardin and Mfume's Senate campaigns right there on the front page of mddems.org.  And frankly, even if the state party didn't want to be neutral it couldn't clear the field if it wanted to.  Now people on the national level could be doing it and certain politicians in MD could be, but the state party itself, no.

Also, one of Mfume's claims was that the Democratic establishment has tried to keep out other white candidates who would hurt Cardin.  Well since then, Lise Van Sustren (pyshciatrist and sister of Greta Van Sustren) and Josh Rales (wealthy executive) have entered the race.  According to most reports Allan Lichtman (an AU professor), and Dennis Rasmussen (former Baltimore County executive) will all enter the race.  That's four more white candidates.

Also, as for it supposedly being a racism thing that is hurting Mfume, it seems to me like a lot of people (but not the state party since their neutral) are encouring House of Delegates Minority Whip & Iraq War veteran Anthony Brown (who is black) to enter the race.

As for the negative attacks on Mfume, why are you assuming it was the state party or higher powers that did that? If I we're going to bet on it, I'd probably say that Cardin's opposition research team is most likely quite competent of doing that on their own.

  • on a comment on Howard Dean's trip to Israel over 6 years ago
You know I'm starting to get tired of people who see things like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in black and white terms (kind of like a certain President we dislike for whom everything is good v. evil).

Claiming the word Zionist is a bad word clearly shows a lack of a historical understanding of the term.

    Here's just a small example of how things aren't so clear-cut: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_Arab.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is complex and trying to reduce it to simplistic good v. evil terms shows that not everyone here is a member of the reality-based community.
