Hillary Clinton Fundraiser - $1.3 million and rising.

I know you may not believe it, but I am still undecided. I am starting to lean more towards Hillary Clinton for many different reasons.

So, just because there seems to be fewer Hillary Clinton supporters who post 'sane' diaries here, I thought I would give her a little push.

This comes via an email I received three hours ago.

We had a huge night last night -- we won the biggest states and the most votes, and we are ahead in the overall race for delegates. But this race is far from over.
Even as we prepare for upcoming races, I want to remind you of what happened the night before Super Tuesday. You and I participated in an extraordinary event -- our "Voices Across America" town hall. I believe with all my heart that there is a direct connection between the conversations we had on Monday and the votes we won on Tuesday.
Voters came out in record numbers, not just to make history but to remake America. Thanks to your support and your votes, the momentum is solidly on our side.
We don't have time to catch our breath -- the next races are just three days away, and there are ten more contests in February alone.

Yeah, they do

If they can prevent an extremely worthy candidate from getting the nomination because she voted to support the president in a show of national unity to a hostile power (like Congress has always done) and because she chooses to applaud US military accomplishments, then, yes, the left has too much power.

Obama is raising money as fast as Google.

His base is certainly wealthier than Clinton's. It a little like how the Republicans generally way outraise the Democrats (except during times of extreme Republican incompetence).

Personally, I'm amazed Hillary is still going. She was written off before New Hampshire, and almost written off again before Super Tuesday.

The rest of the season will be played at a disadvantage for her, but hey, even running low on cash and facing the Kennedy-Kerry-Patrick triumvirate in Massachusetts, she beat them by 15 points. This is a super-tough person here.

And good for her. Somebody in the party has to fight for universal health care.

Obama has many more small donors than Hillary, who has been more dependent on large donors, who have maxed out for the primaries, which is why Hillary is now in the untenable position of loaning herself money.

Yes I'm familiar with that site, I look at it from time to time. What data set there is it that you think disproves my contention that Obama raises more of his money from small donors than Clinton?

From that website, it looks like 43% of Obama's contributions through the end of 2007 came from people donating the maximum, compared with 63% of Clinton's. This represents about 16,000 such donors for Obama, and 19,000 such donors for Clinton.

Obama does have considerably more donors (12,000) who have given $200 or more, which I think is the minimum amount that's required for disclosure.

$200 is quite a bit of money. Not a whole lot of people in Clinton's voter base can shell that out in a primary.

You just said that Obama had 43 percent of his funds from 16,000 donors came from maxed out contributors, while Clinton had 63 percent come from maxed out donors, 19,000 of them. So Clinton had more of her funds coming from more maxed out donors. Both Clinton and Obama get a sizable amount of contributions from big pocket donors, but the point is that Obama cleans Clinton's clock with small contributors, which is why she is running out of money.

$200 isn't that small a donation. I saw some other data in there, which while not comprehensive, showed that Obama was winning handily among donations of $1000 or more.

How much do you think someone making $40,000 would donate, compared to someone making $100,000? I'd bet even the latter wouldn't necessarily kick in more than a few hundred dollars.

Hell, I'm wondering where this was for the last eighteen months.

I mean, I know people who vote for Hillary. I respect them. They would happily give $ to them with the same ardor that Obama supporters do, but for whatever reason there isn't the same emphasis.

Why? I really don't know. I mean, most of the Clinton supporters I know (and we're talking hard-core, long-time Democrats) give money and are on-line.

Because we assumed that she has lots of wealthy donors, like Obama does. But now that we see she needs help, plenty of us are starting to donate. And we're far from maxed out.

Good. I really hope so. Two of the Dems. I like the most (one of which my Stepmom, the other of which a close friend), both huge HRC supporters, were absolutely crestfallen today over the loan story. They're giving tonight.

While reading through the comments, it occurred to me that the reason the reason why Obama is raising much more money is because his supporters can afford to give him money. His support largely resides among those making 150k plus a year. This is confirmed by exit polls and his wins in San Francisco and Marin in Cali.

On the other hand, Hillary is very strong among working class people. These are the people who cannot afford to give any donation whatsoever because they are not doing well.

Only 3% of Obama's contributors have maxed out because he has so many donors, not because he doesn't have rich donors.

If you look at the stats I posted above, you'll see that Obama have similar numbers of maxed-out $2300 donors, but that he has a lot more donors in the $200+ range. (These account for 74% of his total.)

Opensecrets doesn't break it down farther than that.

The real grassroots candidate is Ron Paul, who raised 54% of his money from contributions of less than $200.

And if all these RICH donors, as you state, his donor of 2300+ would be much higher. But it is Clinton who has the traditional rich donors and they are tapped.

You must acknowledge and blame the Clinton Campaign and Terry McAuliffe for not embracing the power of the internet and raising money. More importantly, for not reaching out and EXPANDING the low donor pool.

This low donor pool is the one unit that has kept Obama in this campaign. Raising 28M in January on under 200.00 per person is staggering. The Clinton Campaign has been behind the eight ball with the small donor base and now it is much too late to bring them in.
