Darcy Burner concedes...

Seems that the numbers are not working for Darcy Burner.

From Darcy Burner:

"It is likely at this point that Congressman Reichert has won re-election, and while we will certainly ensure that every valid vote is counted, we accept the decision of the voters.

"I would like to thank the thousands of people who put so much time and effort into the campaign, as well as the countless thousands more who went beyond voting to actively participate in our democratic process this year. The election of Barack Obama as our new President will ensure that the change to the direction of our country called for in this campaign is realized in the new year."

Sad.

I wish she would have stayed with it a little longer. I believe there are still a lot and I mean a lot of votes left to count.

I also believe this "loss" may be partly doe to people only voting for Obama, then maybe Gregoire. I saw and heard way to many people not complete their ballots. They wanted to vote for Obama and that was it.

New voters that are low info voters can be BAD voters.

We need to change this. We need to wake people up to the fact that even Barack Obama NEEDS us to complete the ballot so that he can have "more and better Democrats" to work with.

Friggin Seattle Times!

They fought against Darcy the whole way.

At times they act a little "fox news lite".

I read the New Tribune in Tacoma and if I got a Seattle paper it would be the Seattle PI.

Seattle Times has been waiting to do this:

Reichert wins re-election in 8th District
By MIKE BARBER
P-I REPORTER

Bucking a Democratic trend, Republican U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert has won re-election in Washington's 8th Congressional District, defeating two-time challenger Darcy Burner.

With almost 80 percent of the expected vote counted from Tuesday's election, Reichert's lead was nearing 8,000 votes Friday. Roughly 270,000 votes have been tallied

Re: Friggin Seattle Times!

The P-I switched its endorsement from Burner in 06 to Reichert this year.

I hate to admit it, but...

I think a straight-party option should be on every ballot. I don't always like to use it - though I certainly did this year - but it is convenient when you're pressed for time.

But

In King and Pierce counties we have a mix of mail in/absentee voting and polling places. In Pierce county they use paper ballots at the polls and they also have at least one electronic machine at each polling location.

So, unless there is a place to mark on the ballot for all D's or r's then it would not work here.

Plus, I really don't think I like that option. It makes people lazy and "ditto head" like.

I know my g/f voted for one repub, it was Sam Reed. He is well liked by both sides.

Re: But

The Stranger sure doesn't like Sam Reed, nor do I.   I know Jason Osgood and voted for him.  He kept Reed under 60%--more than touted AG candidate John Ladenburg can say.

This was the last election in WA that used any polls.  From now on, the whole state votes by mail, like OR.  So that other stuff doesn't matter in 2010 or other future years.

Re: But

That is not true about pierce county yet. Many of us here want to keep the polls.

Re: But

Yeah, I'm in King County and turned in my ballot at the polling place on Tuesday.  It's too late; we're 100% vote by mail now.  If anything, my state rep. is telling me they're likely to move back the deadline so ballots have to be received rather than postmarked by Election Day.  I'm urging that they offer more ballot drop locations and make ballots postage-free.

Re: I hate to admit it, but...

It would never work here.  Washingtonians HATE political parties.  Just witness the long, protracted battles over our primaries in the past few years.

WA-8 may be like the old KY-3 situation; the district is very close, but we just can't seem to win it.  I think after losing twice, it's time to find a candidate other than Burner.  How about state rep. Fred Jarett?  Or Sen. Brian Weinstein?

This is a serious bummer.

I agree

I don't think she will get another chance.

If she wants to run for anything again, she may have to go for a state or county office.

Re: I agree

Probably should have done that to begin with.  Darcy's County Councilmember, Kathy Lambert (R), is up in 2009.

Re: Place in Obama admin?

Maybe she could get the new Chief Technology Officer position, or be deputy CTO? Or a subcabinet position at Commerce, Interior, or somewhere else?  Maybe something involving the Air Force or national service, since she was a leading cadet in the Civilian Air Corps as a young person? Perhaps she could come back and run for congress again after building up her resume in the Executive Branch.

I agree.

I voted straight ticket Democrat this year, for the first time ever.  I wanted to remove every single GOP that I could.  They just need to go and take their division, intolerance and greed with them.

Re: I agree.

I've virtually always voted a straight Democratic ticket.  That's since 1995.  The exceptions were a Dem running as an Ind. for Delaware, OH County Commissioner when I was in college, a Socialist Worker's candidate for Seattle Port Commissioner in 1999 (only opponent was a Republican who submitted no statement for the voter guide), Green Joe Swzaja against Jim McDermott in 2000 (and nonpartisan Seattle City Council in 2007), and a Republican protest vote for DC Mayor in 2002.

No more chances

She's lost twice now. In two very big Democratic years. She's gotta aim smaller next time.. it's just not going to happen. Not every year is going to be like the last two.

We need another candidate in this district.

Re: No more chances

Totally agree. It's time for her to give up this one. She's beginning to look like Fran Busby.

Re: Darcy Burner concedes...

That's unfortunate. Yes, we need more, better Democratic voters. California went 61% for Obama, but we lost virtually everything in the downticket races.

Re: Darcy Burner concedes...

That is really too bad. I thought she was a great candidate.

We need to better establish and promote

the Democratic brandname.  It's wonderful that Obama won, and I understand that part of his strategy was to run as a transcendent candidate, transcendent of race and, to some extent, of party, but when our national leaders do that, they limit the effectiveness of Democrats(TM) as a brandname product.  (And this was true, too, of Bill Clinton) The goodwill of doesn't roll down hill to the remaining Democratic candidates because the voters don't perceive themselves as part of a Democratic tribe when they vote for the top of the ticket.

Democratic registration is WAY up, but we should use opportunities like this last election to better establish the party ID of our new voters.  New Democrats should be made to feel they are part of a home team.  The Republicans excel at this.

How can we make that dreadful rag pay?  Fish wrap, that's what their damn paper is good for.  $%#@!

Re: Darcy Burner concedes...

It's time to file Darcy under the "Please don't ever run again" category.  She had huge financial resources in two hugely Democratic cycles and came up short. Perhaps we have stronger candidates out there, despite the blog love for her.  Must be a few state senators in that area.

Re: Darcy Burner concedes...

It's WA; there are plenty of possible candidates!  But Reichert is a tough opponent, and the 8th is a tough district.  It will be interesting to see how it's reshaped after the 2011 redistricting (which is nonpartisan here).  If we're lucky, we should be getting a 10th House seat (OR should receive a 6th).  In all likelihood, it would be Democratic even if the 8th stays in GOP hands.
