Gallup: Obama closing the gap and getting most of Edwards' supporters

The latest Gallup poll shows that Obama now trails Hillary by just 3 pts. Early indication shows that Obama is getting most of John Edwards supporters.

Gallup Poll Daily tracking shows Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama as close as they have been since the polling program started at the beginning of 2008. Forty-four percent of Democratic voters nationwide support Clinton, while 41% support Obama, within the poll's three-point margin of error. The data suggest that Obama has gained slightly more -- at least initially -- from John Edwards' departure from the race. In the final tracking data including Edwards in all three days' interviewing (Jan. 27-29 data), Clinton had 42%, Obama 36%, and Edwards 12%. Since then, Clinton's support has increased two points and Obama's five. Tomorrow's release will be the first pure post-Edwards three-day rolling average

A similar story is emerging from the lastest Rasmussen poll too.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows Barack Obama inching closer to Hillary Clinton in the race for the Democratic Presidential Nomination. It's now Clinton 43%, Obama 37%. (see recent daily numbers). A week ago, Clinton had an eleven point advantage, 41% to 30%.

Daily tracking results are collected via nightly telephone surveys and reported on a four-day rolling average basis. The last two nights of tracking were the first without John Edwards in the race. For those two nights, it's Clinton 44% and Obama 42% meaning that Clinton's support is essentially unchanged. This suggests that many former Edwards supporters now support Obama, many others have yet to make a decision, and few currently support Clinton.

Clearly Obama is riding a wave right now and Hillary might be unable to withstand this tsunami especially after his strong debate performance last night.

Alright. Thanks for posting it.

It's Official: Alma Rangel Backs Obama

By Sewell Chan
new york

Alma Rangel, the wife of Representative Charles B. Rangel, has endorsed Barack Obama's presidential bid, Mr. Obama's campaign announced today. Mr. Rangel, the dean of Harlem politics, is a leading supporter of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Mrs. Rangel said in a statement released by the Obama campaign:

I believe Barack Obama has the ability to unify this country and the character to stand up for what's right instead of what's popular. Barack is a man of principle; a man whose faith in the greatness of our nation gives us hope, showing us what's possible if we work together.

Barack Obama has brought energy and excitement back to the democratic process, calling on all Americans, young and old, to make their voices heard. Change is the air. Senator Obama is the future, part of the new generation of leaders who can inspire us to transform our country.

Mrs. Rangel's appearance on Wednesday at a fund-raiser for Senator Obama, led by his wife, Michelle Obama, surprised some of the people present, because of Mr. Rangel's support for Mrs. Clinton

New Tennessee Primary Poll

What a difference a week can make....WSMV has a new poll out, which shows dramatically different numbers than a previous poll from January 22nd, and it shows a surge for Barack Obama in Tennessee.

Hillary Clinton has edged up 2 points to 36.

Barack Obama has gained 11 points from 20 to 31.

John Edwards has dropped from 16 to 7, with 3 percent fewer undecided votes...still 25% of the poll sample.

This is interesting, as it appears to show that nearly all of the former Edwards support has shifted over to Barack Obama. While the anecdotal evidence I've seen seemed to bear this out, I'm quite surprised to see it occurring across the State of Tennessee. This may show that Hillary Clinton has a limited appeal in Tennessee, and with Edwards out of the picture, more people are willing to give Obama a shot at their support.

While some will point to policy and say that because of Health Care mandates, Hillary should be ahead with Edwards voters, the truth is most people don't pay attention to minute policy differences when choosing a candidate; like it or not, personality goes a long way in making that decision.

Of course, there are still 25% of Democrats who haven't chosen a candidate. This could all go towards Hillary Clinton, we simply don't know. What is also of interest, is that Obama does better with Women (35-34 Hillary to Obama) than with men (36-28 Hillary to Obama) perhaps because Edwards is still pulling in 11% of the vote from that demographic. The question is, will they, like LeftWingCracker, continue to support Edwards in the voting booth on Tuesday, or will they break for another candidate?
