Yeah, I just got the call myself, I was going to put up the same thing, way to go CT-02!
Just wish Diane Farrell won in CT-04
Shays would have been destroyed with rest of the New England Republicans if he didn't get so much good media coverage. He's like the McCain of the House. The only we win this seat is if the 2008 race gets no attention, otherwise the media will continue to keep Shays above water. No-name Democrat for Congress in CT-04!
Not so sure that a no-name would win, Shays will be popular no matter what, and a strong Democrat will help us here. Farrell was a great candidate, but I'm curious to see the amount of Democrats who crossed parties to vote for Shays. We need to work, starting now, to highlight Shay's terrible votes, like the budget reconciliation bill, and whatever he may vote for/against in the new congress. Eroding the Democratic support for him would flip this seat.
But we say that every cycle, and every cycle Shays just pulls it out. I like Farrell, but she has had her chance. It's time for a new more insurgent Democrat. Ah well, I at least assume he would be destroyed through redistricting in 2012. I think that's our best chance against Shays.
Interesting that Shays was supposedly the most vulnerable of the 3 CT GOPers, yet was the only one to survive. The 2 more conservative ones lost, and the maverick survives.
Well. I think you're being a tad selective: Nancy Boyda, Gabby Giffords, and Claire McCaskill all beat men.
And furthermore--Kilroy and Wulsin are losing to other women! Paccione lost to a woman. It's less easy to make a cut and dry argument that voters don't trust women on terror when you have cases like these. But your hypothesis is interesting, and it might still have some merit, exceptions withstanding.
That said, it's a little depressing to see that the vast, vast majority of pick-ups this year were by men. Sucks to have a gender gap that bad.
But Northup is a point in my favor. I'm sorry to say this was a bad year for Democratic women. I'm not sure what to make of it, or how to change it. The losses of Madrid, Kilroy, Murphy, and Farell were downright surprising to me. Also - I forgot Stender who lost narrowly to Feguson in New Jersey. I forgot Hafen who very narrowly lost to Porter in Nevada, and Derby who was beaten relatively handily by...I forget. It's really quite a shame. I don't mention Jennings in Florida, because she won that race.
Without going over each of these races one by one yet again, notice that many if not most of these losses were to incumbents. I most firmly believe in Dean's 50-state strategy, but the fact remains that even very good candidates can and will lose to incumbents unless the incumbents stumble, either during their tenure or in the campaign. In the meantime, they've gained campaign experience and name recognition, and hopefully and presumably will take that experience forward, if not in a rerun, perhaps in other public office.
Why is it any mention of CT-2 gets people talking of anything but.
Can we give Courtney his moment in the sun and just say thank you folks of the second district for turning CT from Red to Blue!
This was not an easy race and we won it with hard work in fiercely Republican areas. Thank you Howard Dean for the inspiration to fight for every seat and take back our country.
If you dont count Vermont as a pick up then we've gained 29 house seats by my count. Is that right?
I'm sure some other political junkies out there will be happy to correct me if I'm wrong, but...CT-02 was home to the closest House race of 1994 (Sam Gejdenson won by 21 votes), and it looks like it'll take that title again this year. I can't think of any other district that can make that claim for any two elections, let alone two that were just twelve years apart. Move over, IN-08!
