Re: CT-2 Update: Courtney Wins!

Yeah, I just got the call myself, I was going to put up the same thing, way to go CT-02!

Just wish Diane Farrell won in CT-04

Re: CT-2 Update: Courtney Wins!

Well hey, now Shays is the only New England GOPer left.

by raginillinoian 2006-11-14 04:54PM | 0 recs
Who would have thought?

Shays would have been destroyed with rest of the New England Republicans if he didn't get so much good media coverage.  He's like the McCain of the House.  The only we win this seat is if the 2008 race gets no attention, otherwise the media will continue to keep Shays above water.  No-name Democrat for Congress in CT-04!

Re: Who would have thought?

Not so sure that a no-name would win, Shays will be popular no matter what, and a strong Democrat will help us here.  Farrell was a great candidate, but I'm curious to see the amount of Democrats who crossed parties to vote for Shays.  We need to work, starting now, to highlight Shay's terrible votes, like the budget reconciliation bill, and whatever he may vote for/against in the new congress.  Eroding the Democratic support for him would flip this seat.

I guess.

But we say that every cycle, and every cycle Shays just pulls it out.  I like Farrell, but she has had her chance.  It's time for a new more insurgent Democrat.  Ah well, I at least assume he would be destroyed through redistricting in 2012.  I think that's our best chance against Shays.

Re: I guess.

Interesting that Shays was supposedly the most vulnerable of the 3 CT GOPers, yet was the only one to survive. The 2 more conservative ones lost, and the maverick survives.

Revelation!!
Women candidates underperformed badly this cycle.  Very badly.  I suspect it has to do with the focus on the Iraq War.  The numbers don't lie.  In Connecticut the two male Democratic challengers won, but Diane Farrell lost.  Chris Shays should have been toppled.  In Pennsylvania, 4 Democratic challengers, all men, won (Sestak, Carney, Altmire, and Patrick Murphy).  Sestak and Murphy are veterans.  Altmire beat a woman.  Lois Murphy, who ran against Jim Gerlach, lost in somewhat of a surprise.  In Ohio, women, Kilroy and Wulsin are losing - but Zack Space won against a woman.  In Illinois, Duckworth lost a close race.  In New Mexico, Patricia Madrid is losing.  In Colorado, Angie Paccione lost a close race.  In Washington, Burner lost to Reichert.  These were almost all of the very close losses.  There was also Wetterling in Minnesota.
Did women not focus enough on the war?  Did voters not trust women with the war?  These questions need answers.  Carole Shea-Porter is the exception that proves the rule.

Re: Revelation!!

Well.  I think you're being a tad selective: Nancy Boyda, Gabby Giffords, and Claire McCaskill all beat men.

And furthermore--Kilroy and Wulsin are losing to other women!  Paccione lost to a woman.  It's less easy to make a cut and dry argument that voters don't trust women on terror when you have cases like these.  But your hypothesis is interesting, and it might still have some merit, exceptions withstanding.

That said, it's a little depressing to see that the vast, vast majority of pick-ups this year were by men.  Sucks to have a gender gap that bad.

Numbers can lie!
Although  there is some substance in your comment that women underperformed, are you not stretching a point when you say that women candidates Kilroy, Wulsin, Madrid and Paccione all lost or are losing when their opponents are/were women? And no one would claim that Space won against Padgett because of the Iraq issue, but because of (male) Ney's corruption and conviction and the general anti-GOP climate in Ohio this cycle, as well as Padgett's personal bankruptcy problems and late nomination and start in the race.
You failed to mention Northrup's defeat by Yarmouth in KY.
Numbers can lie.

Maybe.

But Northup is a point in my favor.  I'm sorry to say this was a bad year for Democratic women.  I'm not sure what to make of it, or how to change it.  The losses of Madrid, Kilroy, Murphy, and Farell were downright surprising to me.  Also - I forgot Stender who lost narrowly to Feguson in New Jersey.  I forgot Hafen who very narrowly lost to Porter in Nevada, and Derby who was beaten relatively handily by...I forget.  It's really quite a shame.  I don't mention Jennings in Florida, because she won that race.

Re: Maybe.

Without going over each of these races one by one yet again, notice that many if not most of these losses were to incumbents.  I most firmly believe in Dean's 50-state strategy,  but the fact remains that even very good candidates can and will lose to incumbents unless the incumbents stumble, either during their tenure or in the campaign.  In the meantime, they've gained campaign experience and name recognition, and hopefully and presumably will take that experience forward, if not in a rerun, perhaps in other public office.

Re: CT-2 Update: Courtney Wins!

According to Tagaris, Farrel tried her best to remove any Lamont related literature from her packets. MAybe it was that lack of teamwork that led to her defeat.

Shays, Shays, Shays...

Why is it any mention of CT-2 gets people talking of anything but.

Can we give Courtney his moment in the sun and just say thank you folks of the second district for turning CT from Red to Blue!

This was not an easy race and we won it with hard work in fiercely Republican areas. Thank you Howard Dean for the inspiration to fight for every seat and take back our country.

You're right.

Congrats to Joe Courtney for sealing the deal.

Look

it was Rahm the all-powerful deity that won CT-2, OK?

by NuevoLiberal 2006-11-15 02:41AM | 0 recs
That makes 29

If you dont count Vermont as a pick up then we've gained 29 house seats by my count. Is that right?

Re: That makes 29

That's right.

The Bloody Second...

I'm sure some other political junkies out there will be happy to correct me if I'm wrong, but...CT-02 was home to the closest House race of 1994 (Sam Gejdenson won by 21 votes), and it looks like it'll take that title again this year.  I can't think of any other district that can make that claim for any two elections, let alone two that were just twelve years apart.  Move over, IN-08!
