Obama At AIPAC: Blame It On Hillary Clinton (Updated)

Photobucket

All us good little Democrats are working night and day to restore party unity, but some prominent progressive websites apparently haven't gotten the message.

Paul Woodward at War in Context was already a progressive way back when Markos Moulitsas was still running around in a Ronald Reagan beanie, but now Woodward has turned against the "presumptive" or "very likely based on non-binding expressions of preference by super-delegates" nominee of the Democratic Party for President of the United States:

Yesterday was the day the "change" bubble burst.  Obama's performance at AIPAC shows that his grasp of Middle East politics has yet to rise to the level of George Bush's! That's an incredible thing to have to say (especially for someone who still intends to vote Democrat) but what Obama demonstrated was the myopia of a candidate who has thrown principle to the wind and decided he will say anything to secure votes and donations. His was a polished performance in the politics of business-as-usual, burnished with a genuflection to Zionism that was utterly uncalled for.

How did it happen?

I can only suppose that having become so deeply enmeshed in Hillary Clinton's psyche, Obama decided he'd couldn't hold back in parroting her down to a T if he was to win over her rightwing Jewish supporters. Having made that choice, he then thought, what the hell? I'll see if I can pull in the whole Likudnik crowd as well.

Barack Obama is "enmeshed in Hillary Clinton's psyche!" She can probably make him quack like a duck! "Yes quack quack We Can!"

This is an unintentionally hilarious new low in the game of "Blame it on Hillary Clinton."

...but the Palestinians aren't laughing.

Commenters who wonder why I don't reply to their comments may be interested to know that I actually replied to "hornplayer's" reasonable question on this thread, and my comment was immediately disappeared by Obama's little thugs. Here it is again:

Woodward says Obama only pandered to AIPAC because he is "enmeshed in Hillary Clinton's psyche." It sounds like eerie mind-control to me!

Al Jazeera sums up Arab reaction to Obama's speech:

Arab leaders have reacted with anger and disbelief to an intensely pro-Israeli speech delivered by Barack Obama, the US Democratic presumptive presidential nominee.

Obama told the influential annual policy conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Council (Aipac): "Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel and it must remain undivided."

His comments appalled Palestinians who see occupied East Jerusalem as part of a future Palestinian state.

Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator, told Al Jazeera on Thursday: "This is the worst thing to happen to us since 1967 ... he has given ammunition to extremists across the region."

It's a real pleasure to see Paul Woodward commenting on my post. He used to run one of the best progressive sites on the internet until he turned into just another cheerleader for Obama, and now he wants to have everything both ways, just like hero Barack Obama!

Woodward says...
"There's a difference between "turning against" someone -- Jacob Freeze claims I turned against Obama -- and making pointed criticism.

I support Barak Obama and believe that he is truly a once-in-a-generation candidate.

Why would I think Paul Woodward has turned against a candidate "who has thrown principle to the wind and decided he will say anything to secure votes and donations."

That's Paul Woodward talking in those quotes, not only on his own site, but already quoted above in my diary!

Why would Paul Woodward turn against a candidate he characterizes as nothing but a money-grubbing media whore with no principles whatsoever?

Paul Woodward's criticism of Obama even makes me sound like a raving Obamabot!

And yet he still supports Obama!

Before Paul Woodward drank the cool-aid, was he looking for a candidate "who has thrown principle to the wind and decided he will say anything to secure votes and donations?"

How did the Paul Woodward, who used to have as much integrity as any progressive on the internet, end up supporting someone that he himself characterizes as a money-grubbing media whore with no principles whatsoever?

It's worth repeating, just because it's so weird!

Paul Woodward's criticism of Obama even makes me sound like a raving Obamabot!

Re: Obama At AIPAC: Blame It On Hillary Clinton

Well, first of all, let me say I really enjoyed the photos on your linked website.  You really are quite talented!

Secondly, I feel like your diary is missing some bits and pieces of critical information.  How exactly did this turn into blame Hillary Clinton?  Wasn't AIPAC over a week ago?  I'd really appreciate a little elaboration.

Re: Obama At AIPAC: Blame It On Hillary Clinton

I think Obama is trying to walk a tightrope that is very thin, and so far he is keeping his balance.  We democrats want to win, and if Obama has to compromise sometimes than he will do what he has to do to win.  He is running to be bi-partisan, and trying to see both sides of the picture, but let nobody doubt that Obama is a democrat.

Re: Obama At AIPAC: Blame It On Hillary Clinton

I dunno SteveM, The diary is somewhat incoherent in my opinion.  Is he critial of Obama?  Clinton? AIPAC?  Plus, he's posted meaningless crap pretty much everyday and takes no time to respond to questions.  If anything, he's the troll.

Re: Obama At AIPAC: Blame It On Hillary Clinton

Well, I'm not familiar with the diarist's body of work and I take your word for it, but surely commenting on Democrats who pander to AIPAC isn't a trollish topic.  After all, that sort of thing arguably had a little something with getting us into the current war, not to mention the next war with Iran...

As I understand the diary, it seems to be a humorous jab at the fact that some blogger actually found a way to blame Obama's pandering to AIPAC on Hillary, as if she invented the concept or something.

What I find sad is that even though I'm a little more towards the so-called "pro-Israel" side of the spectrum myself, what I previously saw as a very promising foreign policy agenda from Obama has been getting all muddled of late as a result of this standard-issue pandering that I guess every politician is expected to do.  I mean, between you and me, talking to Iran but not talking to Hamas makes no frickin' sense.

Anyway, I just don't see the need for a swarm of recipes here, it strikes me as juvenile behavior.

Re: Obama At AIPAC: Blame It On Hillary Clinton
On the contrary, I think this guy is serious.
I agree that Obama has been shameless at attempting to pander to AIPAC to compensate for his past reputation with these AIPAC guys. If obama had any sense, his campaign would be playing up the counter pro Israeli group which approaches the conflict differently and would probably be more in tune with Obama's past comments.

Re: Obama At AIPAC: Blame It On Hillary Clinton

Though I'm no fan of AIPAC, it's disingenuous to blame the Iraq was on them, or any other right-wing Jewish organization.  McClellan makes clear that Bush and Cheney wanted to attack Iraq even before 9-11, along with many gentile neocons.  Accusations like yours border on the "Worldwide Jewish Conspiracy" type.

Re: Obama At AIPAC: Blame It On Hillary Clinton

Trollish diaries usually result in mojo fests, youtube postings, discussions of the weather, etc., because to do otherwise would be lending legitimacy to the trolling.

This diarist pollutes this site daily with hit pieces, smears, and right-wing messaging. It's classic shit-stirring, not honest debate.

And what you're seeing in the comments is mild exasperation and light humor, not trollishness itself. That's in the diary.

Re: Obama At AIPAC: Blame It On Hillary Clinton

OK, I agree Obama cowardly and shamelessly pandered to AIPAC just like many other US politicians do. But where did he blame whatever on Hillary?

This is a stupid diary. You do not even put one excerpt on what Obama said that would justify this title.

Re: Obama At AIPAC: Blame It On Hillary Clinton

There's a difference between "turning against" someone -- Jacob Freeze claims I turned against Obama -- and making pointed criticism.

I support Barak Obama and believe that he is truly a once-in-a-generation candidate. That doesn't mean I'm certain he'll make a fine president -- simply that he has unparalleled potential.

He has my support, but it isn't blind support. If he makes a blunder, I won't hesitate to point it out. Trotting out the phrase "undivided Jerusalem" in front of AIPAC was uncalled for and ill-considered. Even from the purely cynical vantage point of trying to win sympathy in front of that audience, his comments backfired since he quickly had to backtrack, alienating himself from those who already had their suspicions about him.

Suppose Obama had been so bold as to have revive a position that Howard Dean once had the audacity to suggest: that the US should adopt an "even-handed" approach to the Middle East. Would the sky have fallen down?

He would certainly have made headlines, but maybe -- just maybe -- the time would have been right to utter what is surely plain common sense. Instead of having to spin his use of the word "undivided" by turning it into an "open access" Jerusalem, he could have advanced the substantive discussion about the conflict and staked out a position closer to that of the arch rebel himself: George HW Bush. (For those who have forgotten, "even-handed" was once a given -- not some unthinkable political risk.)
