MyDD readers: Note the essential conservatism of establishing gay marriage

In light of the recent coverage of the gay marriage ban again being attempted in Iowa, and the KKK's rally in support of the ban, please consider this:

Self-proclaimed conservatives standing against same-sex civil unions or "gay marriage" aren't necessarily supported by conservative philosophy.

(Please read on. It's brief.)

Same-sex civil unions create households, foster stability, and promote longevity (just as marriage does for heterosexuals), all which make for a more productive society. (That's why more Fortune 500 companies than ever offer same-sex domestic partner benefits.)

It is not conservative to foster individualism by providing state-backed disincentives for mutual, lifelong, committed relationships between two people (i.e., legally forcing people to be single!); or to want any law-abiding citizen to remain alone and isolated, instead of in partnership; or to codify exclusions from helpful rights and protections for an entire class of productive (and potentially more productive) citizens--especially in a functioning, capitalist republic.

No, such things aren't conservative; they are just
meddlesome and just mean-spirited: two things that aren't conservative and, I hope, aren't Iowan.

YOUR CALL TO ACTION:

Please consider writing something like the above in your own words to editors of local papers in states where ban votes (legislative or popular) or ban-related petition drives or lawsuits are occuring 2006: California, Alabama, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Virginia, Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, and (lawsuits in the following) California, Connecticut, Iowa, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Washington state.

I think Iowa and California, where there are both vote or petition actions and lawsuits, will be particularly key. In Iowa, some moderate GOP state senators (and, I suspect, some GOP state representatives) have come out against the ban. They need to be encouraged.

This should be our key issue
As much as I respect Big Dog's opinion and insights on the nuts and bolts of politics, this is part of our problem:

PS: Two things; 1. Poll data shows that up to 85% of Repubicans, while disagreeing with much of the Admin agenda, will defend Geo W when attacked personally. A Democrats direct attack on him energizes their base. And he's a lame duck anyway. Focus on the results of the 'Admin' actions. De-personalize the criticism.

That is not an argument for going easy on Bush. It is an argument for going right after the son-of-a-bitch.

Rights is probably the most incendiary issue the wrongnuts have and we should be attacking them on the issue at full throttle. Attack wrongnuts on gay rights, stem cell research and a family's freedom to make their own medical decisions. Big Dog is tied up today because of this:

2. The last remaining Elder in my family made her transition last night and will be with my only remaining relative today making arrangements. I will not be around to respond into the comments as I normally would.

How Big Dog and his family handle the moral and ethical decisions of a family member passing over is nobody's business but his. We should be sending a bigger balls than king kong Butt The Fuck Out message to wrongnuts on (1.) gay rights, (2.) a woman's freedom to choose and (3.) end of life decisions.

If we link all three of those together we can take the bastards down on their supposedly strongest issues.

hey IseFire
I  visited your site a few days ago and found some great tools and links.  Thanks for all the work you do.

I worked to get the Gay Marriage platform inlcuded in the Kerry Campaign and defended anyone who brought it up.

It's about time Liberals sttod up for the individual factions that comprise Liberals.  Instead of running for the political hills and making snarky comments about how they GLBT is ruining the Dems.

Nothing could be further from the truth.
