Primary Hijacked from Clinton

A couple of decades ago, David Dinkins, a soft spoken,  black intellectual ran for Mayor of NYC.

His campaign had a few similarities to Obama's.

The spin went that Dinkins was such an outstanding candidate, that he would only not be elected for one reason: because white NYC was racist.

Everyone felt honor bound to give NYC its first black Mayor.

Even people who weren't that excited about Dinkins went along.

To cut to the chase, Dinkins won the election.  It turned out he was terrible. In fact, he was the worst Mayor of NYC that anyone could remember.

Early-on the democratic blogs were hijacked by Obama operatives.  Clinton supporters were either harassed off, kicked off, or threatened with being "outed" if they did not leave.

I know one blog host who did not comply.  He has been threatened that "he would never again be accepted by the progressive community" if he stayed with Clinton.

The competition was silenced, the blogs became one solid smear job on Hillary Clinton.  Influencing young people, and giving the media the illusion that there was a solid front for Obama.

Without a doubt this kind of thing is going on with delegates.  And super delegates. They are falling like European countries to Hitler.

The race card is played and working.  Winning means nothing now.  Because the states Hillary wins are "racist." All of West Virginia is racist.  All of Kentucky is racist.  Any state, talk show host, news show or blog is racist if they do not fall into line and say that Obama is the nominee.

Our most progressive economist points out that Obama's health proposal is right wing, and cannot possibly pass.  His economic proposal is far to the right of Hillary Clinton's.

Obama just told Kentucky that he supports "clean" coal, even though environmentalists are dead against it - because clean coal is filthy.

These small details don't resonate with the news or progressive press, who are telling us Obama won.  Even though Hillary Clinton won 2 out of the last 3 elections, and is heading for 2 more victories.

A Saturday Night Live skit of Clinton is being played over and over - they way they aired Howard Dean's yell in '04.

The media is telling us who our candidate is.
What delegate will dare sacrifice his or her career bucking the media steamroller of Matthew's mouth, Russert's fake gravitas, Campbell Brown's shrill chirp.  Doing that would most certainly bring on the accusation of being "racist."

My main worry is will the intimidation stop?  Or would it continue into a presidency?

At any rate, in the unlikely event that Obama does win the GE, let's hope he is a little better president than David Dinkins was Mayor.

At this point, like Bill says, it's a toss of the dice.

The sad thing for me is that I was originally for Obama. The strong-arming
was a turn-off, and I started researching both candidates and decided on Clinton.
What I'm saying is that Obama did not have to resort to Chicago
gangland tactics. He could have easily won the primary by actually being the nice
guy he only pretends to be.

Re: Yeah, but he wasn't elected by guilt tripping

John Lewis gave his reasons for supporting Obama and it wasn't being guilt-tripped. And this is not a man who lacks courage. He has stood up to crowds, he has been beaten, and he is an American hero.

Re: I'm waiting for proof

Label him an idiot?  That's just silly.  Lewis was certainly pressured to switch.  One could say he was threatened by a support for a primary opponent, or pressured to feel guilty for not supporting a strong black candidate--they both happened.  We can't say that's why he switched, but the pressure was certainly applied.

by Thaddeus 2008-05-12 07:42PM | 0 recs
Re: Because John Lewis

I remember when he was going to march across a bridge in Alabama... but then someone said that, someone heard, that someone might run against him in a primary... so he was all, nah, not gonna do.

Oh no, wait he did do it. And got the crap beat out him, so that an asshole on MyDD could imply his decision was based on something other than his honest belief about what would be best for this country.

John Lewis has been through way to much to deserve to have his integrity questioned by anyone.

by Tatan 2008-05-12 07:56PM | 0 recs
I put my life on the line

as a pollwatcher for Charles Evers in Mississippi in 1971 where I was nearly lynched.  I've been jailed and gassed in civil rights and anti-war rallies, so don't you dare talk to me about integrity, John Lewis, or putting it on the line, you little puke.

I have great respect for John Lewis.  I also understand the pressure exerted by those who understandably expect civil rights veterans, even heroes, to support Obama.  And if you think this pressure was not exerted, you are naive, as well as rude and ignorant.

by Thaddeus 2008-05-14 09:16PM | 0 recs
Re: I put my life on the line

I think pressure may have been exerted. But more importantly I think it impugned the man's character to suggest he might have buckled to any pressure. He said at the time 'it was the hardest thing' he's ever had to do. I don't believe a man with his integrity and his strenght of character would endorse someone based on a possible primary challenge that would likely fail. I think if John Lewis says he's supporting Barack Obama because he thinks he's the best person for the job, John Lewis has earned the right to be taken at his word. Or would you call him a liar to make a cheap political point that gains you nothing?

Since you've done so much I will do you the courtesy of ignoring your personal slights on me.

by Tatan 2008-05-14 10:26PM | 0 recs
Re: I put my life on the line

One other point. As much presure as may have been put on him to endorse Obama. I assure you there was an equal if not greater amount of presure coming from the Clinton camp to stick with Hillary. So the idea that he caved to one presure but not the other is silly, not just insulting.

by Tatan 2008-05-14 10:33PM | 0 recs
different kinds of pressure

they aren't commensurate.

It does not malign someone's character to say they were influenced by pressure, e.g., the entreaties of long-time supporter or colleagues in the Civil Rights movement.  Perhaps you would be more comfortable with persuasion, intense efforts at...

The prospect of a primary challenge would be another message to Lewis that he is out of step with the aspirations and identities of his constituents, that he needs to "get with the program" and re-vision where his solidarities should lie.

I apologize for "little puke."

Re: asdf

I tend to do the same thing. With this person, I don't know for sure, I could be completely wrong. I've just always pictured the diarist as a female, in part because I'm not sure s/he realizes s/he's a troll. And to be honest, I generally think of the hysterical Hillary supporters as female. Maybe that sounds sexist, but I'm a woman myself, and in my experience, the online Hillary worshippers are often female.

Too bad most other voters didn't agree with you.

I like Edwards, a lot as it happens.  Amazing candidate he isn't.  He won a Senate seat in something of a fluke he could never reproduce, and he never really caught fire as a presidential candidate.

I like him a lot, but that's not enough for him to win.  Not even close.

This diarists thought process can be broken down

like this:

Dinkins was a bad major -> Dinkins was black -> all blacks must be bad leaders -> barack obama is black -> vote hillary

I've met five-year-olds with better critical thinking skills.

I love the pics guys!!!

You know the "infamous" Clinton machine must've been missing quite a few screws, nuts, bolts, switches, bits...because her campaign was the epitome of a "broke down " performance. She has no one to blame but herself and her decisions.
She needs to start taking personal responsibility for her own failures, and for totally underestimating her opponent... and most importantly, her opponent's supporters.

Quite frankly, Hillary didn't do her homework..that's why she's being sent home.

Re: Primary Hijacked from Clinton

This is a quite interesting conspiracy theory. Why don't you have a chat with my mom, who used to be a Clinton supporter and has never read a blog. She is very independent minded, a 70+ white woman voter in EVERY election. And she gave up on Hillary 5 or more years ago. Long before she'd ever heard of the candidate she supports now, Barack Obama.

Re: Primary Hijacked from Clinton

I almost hate to help, since it's not a nice image from the perspective of a Hillary supporter, but you need to be on Auto or HTML Format and use this tag:

<img src=LINK>

Just replace the word "link" with the actual link to the image. This site uses classic html for most things.

RECC'ED

absolutely, testify, this primary has all been about "finally, the world can say 'America got over race'," and "its time to pay the blacks for oppression," and this PC affirmative action culture in which today's youth is brought up thruout schools and colleges, with their "diversity fairs" and "black history month" and quota systems is handing this nomination to Obama. The reason the youth, except me, love Obama is precisely because they now have some validation for all the PC stuff they heard about in school. The people who peddle it to them are those on Daily Kos and Huffington Post. All of these people, are either too young, or haven't read up on their political history to remember George McGovern, Walter Mondale, and even Harvey Gantt. McCain-Obama could look like that, and a loss is a loss, and American cannot afford one.

Re: Primary Hijacked from Clinton

It is simply a reported and known fact that Hillary's campaign, from her own operatives, has threatened superdelegates in this campaign. Look at how they treated Richardson in public. What is going on behind the scenes, in the Clinton's hard balling of superdelegates, as has been reported, is just as bad (and this is part of the reason why superdelegates have been abandoning the Clinton's: they're completely turned off by this "pressure").

Add to that the fact that there was a coordinated effort by bloggers for Hillary to send threatening and intimidating e-mails to the undecided super delegates just a few days ago and . . .

These are FACTS. What you have laid out here is some kind of distorted projection: accusing Obama and Obama supporters and blogs of the very actions HRC and her campaign and supporters are KNOWN to have engaged in.

Sad. Truly sad.

by DrPolitics 2008-05-12 08:14PM | 0 recs
Oh my

and you think Obama and his friends did not do any of what you mention? They just asked nicely and moved on?

Are you also telling me that O supporters never had and do not have coordinated efforts to pressure the SDs? Especially the black SDs? I clearly remember reading about this on the dailyobama.

by kevin22262 2008-05-12 08:25PM | 0 recs
You are right

both sides put pressure on the super delegates.  Heck I called my rep (Colin Peterson asked him to make up his mind (I pointed out Obama won the caucus in his district), I am guessing he doesn't really care as he has his seat for life due to his position on the Ag committee, but still I wish he would decide along with all of the supers wear voting has taken place who aren't leaders of the national party (ie Dean).

Hey Kevin

I think the reason it got spammed is because it is crap, I mean we can do with out the Nazi references right?  And what about judging a candidate on their own merits.  I only posted a fail pic because this diary fails Godwin's law (normally I just boo this guy as he advocated going to an Obama rally just to boo him).  I can understand the pic spamming but it is better used on a clintonrodhamfeh type diary (where everyone can clearly agree that the diarist is a PoS)

Please, both of you.

Upstate girl, what's the point in provoking him? I think he TR'd you unnecessarily, but all you're doing by egging him on is collecting more troll ratings.

And Kevin, they're just posting pictures. If they're being disrespectful, it's just because this diary is highly inappropriate -- the diarist compares Obama to Hitler. When a someone accuses a Democrat of being a Nazi, I automatically consider him/her a troll. I sometimes post silly pictures in troll diaries, too, and you know I'm not an Obama kid.

by sricki 2008-05-12 09:36PM | 0 recs
Re: Please, both of you.

Because they only want someone to take them seriously enough to argue with them. And if posting photos of Obama in a diary that compares him to Hitler is enough to rile them up and get them to really say what's on their narrow little minds, so much the better.

Kevin, I love you and care about you, as a person. You are a shining star. A special snowflake. There's only one you in all of existence, a precious soul.

Now TR me again!

Kevin, when the stars come out at night, do you look up at the sky and think of me?

Re: Primary Hijacked from Clinton

this diary underscores the intolerance of Obama supporters. They know everything the diarist says is true, so all they can do in response is call everyone racist, or post picture spam of Barry. This diary underscores a problem in society, that of balancing equality with guilt, and too many times, the white guilt outweighs true equality, ignoring all qualifications in order to please the demands of one group, and assuage guilt for wrong doings over 150 years old. You can be a Democrat, a liberal one without always being guilty about everything, that you sacrifice what is important to act on guilt, and to please one group. I supported getting rid of Jim Crow, ending slavery, giving people voting rights, but what I am against is giving people positions or jobs when they truly do not have the qualifications thinking that doing that will somehow make up for past events, or make me more noble, and because "diversity" sounds good. When you push "diversity" on everyone, people eventually get turned off. Affirmative action is sometimes necessary, but only when the person's economic situation demands it. Too many times, jobs, colleges, and I believe this nomination go to minorities just for the institution's sake of saying "we gave this to a minority" and "we are SOOOO diverse" and making everyone feel better about people with their white skin, not mostly even related to them, and their mistakes. This guilt is not healthy and helps no one.

Re: Primary Hijacked from Clinton

Aw, we're so guilty, we couldn't possibly think he's a good candidate just on the strength of his character and power of his convictions (to coin a phrase)...nope, we silly white folks just fall head over heels to vote away our guilt! You caught us!

Here's another hug just for you!

what convictions?

as in switching on Iraq numerous times, first being against it, then saying he doesn't know how he would have voted on it in 2004 after taking the 2002 speech of his site, then going back to funding it, then running for President and trumping the card. How about Obama on the energy policy, voting for the Cheney Bill? How about his pandering, which I think he's correct to do, but does on gay marriage? How about him not throwing Wright under the bus, and then when its politically expedient, finally doing it? Conviction? No my friend, he's another politician, appealing to the Daily Kos/Huffington Post crowd.

Re: what convictions?

Oh see, here you go, you just want an entrance for your talking points. That's what really kills you is when people stop taking the bait anymore. That's when the fade into obscurity starts, and man, I bet the panic is terrible. Kisses!

Qualifications.

Hmmmm. He is bringing thousands of new voters to the party, inspiring the youth vote, is putting formerly blue states into play (ie Virginia as of the last Rasmussen poll) and has beaten what was supposedly an unstoppable political machine.  Sounds like good qualifications to me.

Bottom line.  A politician that gets the most votes-they are the most qualified.  Really simple, Occam's Razor sort of stuff.

get it in your head.

Virginia is NOT IN PLAY FOR THE GENERAL! I don't care if he won it in the primary, which occured before Wright/bittergate/typicalwhitegate, and it has gone Repub everytime since 1968. It goes Republican by large margins too, it doesn't waver like California did over the years, being close in 1960, 1976, and 1988 before finally going Dem and doing it for good in 1992. VA has been solidly Republican as of recent, and for the last 40 years. Barack Obama will never win it.

From the MYDD Front Page (5:30am 4-13)

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in Virginia finds John McCain leading Barack Obama by just three percentage points, 47% to 44%. That's a significant improvement for Obama after trailing the presumptive Republican nominee by eleven points a month ago.

Virgina has had opted for a Democratic Governor (Mark Warner and Tim Kaine) in the past 2 elections. Virginia elected a Democratic Senator (Jim Webb). Virgina will be electing another Democratic Senator in November (Mark Warner). Virginia, thanks in part to Mark Warner's coat tails, will very likely elect a Democratic President in November.

Obama has a very good chance at winning VA.

Re: get it in your head.

I'm guessing you haven't seen the latest polls, shows Obama 3 point down on McCain in VA.  Oh I would say it's in play all right.

Re: Primary Hijacked from Clinton

The diary compared Senator Obama to Hitler.

I shouldn't have to explain how fucked that is, and you shouldn't need to have me explain it to you.

You should be ashamed for defending this crap.

Re: Primary Hijacked from Clinton

A quick synopsis:

"Hey, there was this black mayor who sucked, so Obama will too.

And, the fact that SNL made an anti Hillary sketch is BS, because they were so spot on with that anti-Obama sketch.

Did I mention that Obama has used all his connections from his years of leading the party to try to strong arm his way to the nomination?"

Ta-da!

Re: Primary Hijacked from Clinton

You know, if you put half the energy you spend on these ludicrous diaries into phone banking and campaigning for Hillary, she MIGHT have won the nomination.

Re: Primary Hijacked from Clinton

The democrats have a certain way of picking electoral losers like Obama.

The rest of the country isn't like NYC. He's a horrible candidate who will blow a sure thing for the Dems this year. And his supporters are going to help him to it. They are creeping people out and pushing them toward McCain. Rasmussen says that Obama supporters are attacking Hillary supporters in WV.

It's the end of the line for Obama. He's McGovern the return.

Re: Primary Hijacked from Clinton

Actually Hillary won NYC. It's 'the rest of the country' that's been picking Obama.

Re: Primary Hijacked from Clinton

No the rest of the country is NOT picking Obama. Have you looked at those county by county maps? Obviously not if you're making that kind of statement.

Re: Primary Hijacked from Clinton

Have you looked at the delegate count?

by Tatan 2008-05-13 06:43AM | 0 recs
Oh yeah.

or the number of states won.

Re: Oh yeah.

LOL! Red state caucuses but gets blown out when people vote. That's a real winner of a candidate. I guess Obama doesn't realize that we aren't having a national caucus in Nov. does he?

by Ga6thDem 2008-05-16 03:48AM | 0 recs
Re: Oh yeah.

You know there have only been 7 state caucuses right? And Hillary won one of them. So that's six caucuses he's one, even if you take those wins away, he's still ahead of her by a wide margin in the number of states won.

by Tatan 2008-05-16 07:08AM | 0 recs
Re: Oh yeah.

Number of states won? LOL! The only thing that matters in Nov. is electoral votes of which he is horribly behind in.
