McCain Jokes about Gorilla RAPING a Woman

My jaw dropped when i read this and I am just at a loss for words, so Im just going to post this article by Sam Stein at the Huffington Post.

Here's the joke in question from 1986:

Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, `Where is that marvelous ape?'

The MEDIA's complicity in McCain's sexism is absolutely horrendous. The bile that comes out of this man's mouth, and the media has yet to cover one bit of it. Even THE MCLAUGHLIN GROUP of all people, including mclaughlin himself thinks McCain is the media darling. For god's sake, he had a BBQ with the Associated Press, who we've just found has been in very friendly correspondence with Karl Rove, telling him "Keep up the fight"! And Obama didnt get any standing ovation at the AP conference invitation, in fact, the presenter called him "Osama" and it just looked so intentional. McCain meanwhile got a minutes-long standing ovation, and Liz Sidoti of the AP brought him donuts "with [his] favorite, sprinkles".

Anyways, I hope nobody minds that i posted this, but this is essential reading. If anyone has a problem with me not writing my own opinions, I understand and will delete this.

McCain Ape Rape Joke Recalled By Sources

News circulated fast late Tuesday afternoon that back in 1986, during his initial run for the Senate, John McCain allegedly told a crude joke about rape involving a woman's affection for an ape.

The story, which was reprised on the blog Rum (http://www.rumromanismrebellion.net/2008 07/15/the-comedy-stylings-of-shecky-mcc ain), Romanism and Rebellion before being blasted out by Think Progress (http://thinkprogress.org/2008/07/15/mcca in-finds-rape-hilarious/), goes like this: In an appearance before the National League of Cities and Towns in Washington D.C., McCain supposedly asked the crowd if they had heard "the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die?"

The punch line: "When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, "Where is that marvelous ape?"

Eeeshh. The joke, as one can imagine, did not go over well with various women's groups, which responded with indignation. But the McCain campaign denied that he had ever said the offensive gag.

"It's pretty obvious to us that this is a politically motivated sideshow," Torrie Clarke, McCain's spokeswoman at the time, said back in 1986. Till this day it has never been proven definitively true or false whether the Senator ever said the line.

The Huffington Post reached out to the original reporter in that story, Norma Coile (who wrote about the response to the rape joke in the Tuscon Citizen) to find out if she thought it was true. (http://big.assets.huffingtonpost.com/tuc songorilla.pdf)

"I'm not sure exactly what the wording was of the joke, but something was said. Some joke involving a rape and ape was said. Enough women repeated it to me at the time and the McCain campaign had a non-denial denial," said Coile, now with the Arizona Daily Star. "It came after his 'Seizure World' joke, in which he referred to the [retirement community] Leisure World as Seizure World... I just think it reinforced this idea that John McCain is humor-challenged. Whatever his qualities, he seems to have a tin ear for how these jokes will go over."

Indeed, while this anecdote occurred more than 20 years ago, McCain has occassion found himself with his foot in his mouth throughout his time in public office. Back in 1998, he odiously declared before a GOP crowd: "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."

More recently he joked that it might be good for the United States to keep exporting cigarettes to Iran as cancer would prove an effective weapon against that country's citizens.

But venturing into the extremely sensitive subject of rape and humor is not something that - even 22 years later - will endear McCain to the women voters his campaign has sought to recruit. And organizations in Arizona that weighed in on that 1986 line see it as another example of the Senator not being sensitive to female issues and concerns.

"I don't think we can say one example like that is indicative of someone's character. But certainly I think John McCain has made lots of quotes where he says jokes like that," said Linda Barter, head of the Arizona Women's Political Caucus, which objected to McCain's joke at the time. "Our organizational purpose, however, is to increase the number of elected and appointed women, and we support pro-choice women, so there is certainly a division there. John McCain has not been pro-choice or supportive of issues related to women's reproductive health."

Did you hear the Bernie Mac joke -

his mom and his sisters are whores! Obama had a good laugh, then collected a bunch of checks for it.

Try Google, read the news

Not just news on barackobama.com.

Re: Try Google, read the news

No need to be a jerk to the guy.  I am actually a little confused why you would not condemn stuff like this from McCain with the same fervor with which you pick at every perceived or imagined mistake by Obama.

And yes, what Bernie Mac said was insulting and wrong.

by Xris 2008-07-15 07:37PM | 0 recs
And Obama laughed approvingly

"I'm just messin' with you man" Obama said to Mac. Nice.

Re: And Obama laughed approvingly

And I don't think that is cool at all.  But I don't get worked about stuff like that as much as I guess.  I was not offended by most of what Hillary said during the campaign, and did not think obama was out of line that much either.  Maybe I am just used to being abused by my republican co workers, who knows.

But have a good night catfish and keep fighting the good fight.

Re: Try Google, read the news

Try backing up your claim. Oh that's right, you can't, you pulled it out of your a#s.

kind of wish I had not defended you now.  Time for me to back out of this poop flinging fest.

Re: Try Google, read the news

Sorry about that, but he's the second Obama hater to make the claim that Obama laughed at Bernie Mac's jokes. They can't back it up, so they ignore my request for proof. The only place you will find it claimed that Obama laughed at the jokes is on Larry Johnson's hate site in the title of an article Johnson wrote about this. He doesn't back up the title in the body of the article. Johnson also twists two of the jokes into something they were not in an effort to make them look worse than they were.

I am not defending Bernie Mac's jokes or claiming they were appropriate. I am calling out the anti-Obama posters who are making false claims about Obama.

Re: McCain Jokes about Gorilla RAPING a Woman

I don't get the joke? I mean, even ignoring the crassness, I simply don't understand what it means...

Let me help

Oh, you must not have gotten the memo.  Women like being raped, they just pretend not to.

/sarcasm (obviously, I hope)

McCain has a history of deriding women and associating himself with other men that do the same.  For all the yelling about Obama's "sexism," intention or otherwise, during the primary, why aren't progressives hammering McCain?  He called his wife a cunt for gods sakes.  I don't know anyone that would ever call a woman that, let alone to her face and in public in front of a bunch of strangers.

John McCain really does not give 2 craps about women.

Both Obama and McCain have room for improvement

when it comes to respecting women. But this diary conveniently omits Obama.

Bernie Mac not running for president. Obama

laughed at the jokes, and collected checks for his campaign (Mac performed at an Obama fundraiser.) The next day, from a safe distance, Obama's campaign released a statement disapproving of Mac's jokes. Of course, if Mac complains, Obama can say one of his staffer released the statement without his knowledge. He has a pattern of doing that.

Mr. Both Ways Obama!

Re: Bernie Mac not running for president. Obama

This is the second time you claim Obama laughed at the jokes. I asked you for proof the last time you made this claim and you had none. You still don't have any. The only place this claim is made was in the title of an article written by Larry Johnson. And, even that hate-filled person couldn't bring himself to make the same claim in the body of the article.

You won't get a free pass on this. I will call you on it every time I see you make this false claim until you come up with proof or drop it.

Re: Bernie Mac not running for president. Obama

Oh, it's from No Quarter.

Why didn't you say so?  Let's hear the part where after laughing at the jokes, Obama pawed a white woman.

You won't get a free pass on your attitude

Obamamessiah said:

"That means, by the way, Bernie you got to clean up your act. This is a family affair... I'm just messing with you," he said.

Re: You won't get a free pass on your attitude

Where did it say he laughed at the joke? "I'm just messing with you" has to be the oddest sounding laugh in history.  So all you have here is an admission that Obama isn't going to try and turn Bernie Mac into Sinbad.

Really, if you are going to criticize Obama, do it.  This, "Obama is a bad person because someone he's associated with said something wrong" act is pathetic.  Can YOU vouch for and support everything said by everyone YOU know? I doubt it. I also doubt you publicly admonish your friends every time they make an off color comment in public.
