Fake "Democrat" Voter Guide in VA

(Promoted from the diaries. The GOP knows how much trouble they're in because of Bush's failures, so they're going to pull out all the stops when it comes to dirty politics. The Corzine campaign has warned us what's to come here in New Jersey and I would imagine the Kaine campaign is ready for it as well. Still, be alert and report what you see. -- Scott)

I just received "2005 Official Democrat and Progressive Voter Guide-Governor of Virginia" in my mailbox. Its purpose was to inform voters on "the issues most important to Democrat and Progressive voters." In tiny type, next to the picture of Tim Kaine it said "Paid for and authorized by Virginians for Jerry Kilgore."

Not surprisingly, the message was to vote for Russell Potts.

The contact numbers listed were wrong, both for Mr. Potts and Tim Kaine.

A new low in Virginia politics.

UPDATE (Scott): User mlk at Daily Kos posted a diary with scans of the offending materials. Here's the front and a zoom of the 'Paid for...' text.

You should immediately contact Kaine's offices : http://www.kaine2005.org/contact/
(call all of them), and tell them to immediately take remedial actions.

One such action they could take is:

  • make a recording of the disgusting campaign tactic
  • place calls to the "progressive" voter rolls that they have.

Tell them also to send someone to visit your diary for possible further action and ideas.

They really must to do this since margin will be razon thin, and we all know exactly what dangers await close races these days.

Please come back and post updates.

Update 2
OK, there are a total of four dKos diaries on the VA-GOV stuff.

  1. Primary action: for volunteering for phonebanks etc, please visit this dKos diary by ten10.

  2. The mailer story action (with pictures) is here. But it got a bit complicated because the Kaine campaign put out a questionable mailer earlier this week for which it even got fined, and the Straight-F GOP seems to have gotten an A+ in hitting back, HARD. Here is the specific comment of particular interest.

more updates later.

Ideas invited
OK, on tactics, we can't strike back for the reason i mentioned above. But how about on substance?

And how can we get it to reach as many voters before tuesday as possible?

please contribute your ideas and thoughts here.

VOTING EQUIPMENT data is here.
For anyone interested, here is the data on the types of voting technology in place in VA, by county/locale (from verifiedvoting.org).

VA Voting Tech Table.

I think that the data is uptodate through 9/2004, but some counties may have updated their equipment since then.

Thanks to the folks at verifiedvoting, and thanks to myDD, where I am hosting this file.

Very urgent, trick phone calls.

Good advice, Neo-Liberal
The first people that I talked to were my local Kaine campaign office in Fairfax County. I already delivered my copy to them. When I called, two other people had already reported this.

I will spend the rest of the night following the rest of your advise.

Just called Kaine's HQ
They are currently working on getting this on the media.

If any of you know journalists, please call/email them to please follow this story.

We should call our friends and let them know about this tactic. Please spread this story on other blogs.

Re: Just called Kaine's HQ
Do you have a daily Kos account (that's at least 24 hours old)?

i posted a link to your diary over there

If we can get a recommended diary there, we can generate a lot of help immediately. A good idea to counter this sleaze as well as additional last minute help.

Let me know.

Re: Just called Kaine's HQ
I called the HQ in Richmond but only got a rec. msg. Then call and talked to Tonya Tarr at the Arl. office ((703) 528-8588; call if you have some good ideas).

Told her that: Kaine should get on as many news outlets in VA as possible scream foul and raise hell by calling it a "sleazy scam", "part of the culture of corruption" etc. She said she'll convey that message to the media management people.

I'll try to followup with her later, but I am still thinking of ways we can help with help from Kossacks and myDDers.

  1. get several phonebankers to join the existing and updates phone campaigns

  2. One idea is to organize a radio/TV show callins over the next 2 days.

I can spend some 30 mins on this now (and a few hours later tonight) to help you out. I am not from VA, so I lack the local knowlegde though.

Thanks for the link at kos
I think that the news is building steam at kos; it has been mentioned in the leading stories related to  Virginia. Thanks!

Right now we need to get a scanned copy to send show it around. I don't have my copy anymore. If someone has one, please scan it and post it online.

Call Kilgore"s Headquarters
I did not call Tim Kaine's Headquarters. I called the headquarters of Jerry Kilgore ( 804-421-9966)

I was not anything but very firm and sort of polite, but I let the young woman I talked to know how low and dirty that trick was.

NOTE: The disclaimer that the piece came from the Kilgore campaign was so small and hidden that it took me quite a while to find it. (Illegal??)

I kept that person busy for a few minutes. That means that she could not be doing GOTV during that time.

Let the KIlgore people know about this dirty trick and how you reject it. Give them a call. Lots of calls. Hundreds of calls.

Re: Call Kilgore"s Headquarters
On the face of it, it would seem illegal (or sure as hell should be) but who the hell knows.  Definately on the same grounds as a Swiftie attack.  I hope the media grows some balls and pounces hard on this story.

Re: Call Kilgore"s Headquarters
The one nice thing is that the Republicans who are killing us never do anything that "should be illegal." Yeah right. Our choice: A little teeny ethical compromise today, or the Paris suburbs tomorrow.

Re: Call Kilgore"s Headquarters

I called the headquarters of Jerry Kilgore ( 804-421-9966).

Let these cretins know that we know what they are. Better yet, let them spend 20 minutes bringing you to the point of almost agreeing with them, then say "I would vote for him, but my minister would hate me if I did -- so I can't. But lots of luck."

by blues 2005-11-06 07:22AM | 0 recs
Anyone have a scanner?  Can we get some scans of the pages?  I am not sure where NEOLIBERAL stores the pics he uses in his Draft Gore posts, but maybe he would be willing to host the scans or know a place to store them.  A new low...   BTW, nice jumping on the issue NeoLiberal and Hugo... Great response.  Wonderful Job!

This is clearly a fake voter guide.  Wingers always say "Democrat" instead of Democratic when referring to the party, they must have done polling or focus groups finding that people respond negatively to "Democrat" rather than "Democratic".
by Max Friedman 2005-11-06 04:49AM | 0 recs
Re: "Democrat"
Funny how they couldn't even bring themselves to use the word 'Democratic' when trying to scam Democrats, huh? I'm starting to wonder if calling us 'Democrat voters' doesn't even faze them anymore. I'm also starting to wonder if it's going to fall into such common usage that it loses the negative connotations the rightists rely on it for.

Does anyone know
for sure who actually printed this turkey?  Did Kilgore fess up?

Is there a reason that the Kilgore ID inside is any more believable than the obviously fake 'progressive voter guide' outside?

by phillies 2005-11-06 06:43AM | 0 recs
Re: Does anyone know
Good question.  Has anyone acknowledged paying for this brochure?  I find it hard to believe that Kilgore's people would actually put their name on it.

Fake Voter Guide
I got this piece, took a quick look at it, wondered how Russ got the money to send & thought it wasn't really like Russ to send something like that out & tossed it!! I'm pretty stunned (my husband isn't!!)  I've called a friend who works at the Washington Post - I hope it gets covered. The Post sure had a ringing endorsement of Kaine on the editorial page this morning though!!

Re: What a hideous looking donkey
But whatcha gotta love is the truth hidden in the color scheme:
a red head on a blue body - a winger in donkey's clothing!
Is there no tactic that is beneath these people? I challenge the Republicans to name one dirty trick they are above and then hold that promise for even one election cycle. Our democracy can only survive if the press and the people repudiate these kinds of vile tactics.
