McCain thinks rape is FUNNY.

From tedski at Daily Kos, also known as the dude behind Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion.

We knew that John McCain made a piggish joke about Chelsea Clinton having Janet Reno for a father.

We knew that he called his wife a 'trollop' and a 'c@nt.'

We knew he just giggled when someone asked him 'how are we going to beat the bitch?'

We had no idea what a pig John McCain really is.

From his first Senate campaign, here's a joke St. John of Hanoi liked to tell his buddies:

Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, `Where is that marvelous ape?'

Hilarious!  I mean, who doesn't like to tell a good yarn about women being degraded, bestialized, brutalized, and raped?

I mean, after all, they enjoy that kind of stuff.

But, I'm sure he'd be the most pro-woman President in our history.

Um - Bernie Mac, Barack Obama

were laughing at their sisters and mothers being prostitutes less than a week ago. Do you really want to go there?

Re: Um - Bernie Mac, Barack Obama

"Sen. Obama told Bernie Mac that he doesn't condone these statements and believes what was said was inappropriate."

You never let the facts get in the way of a good talking point, eh catfish?

I'm just messin' with you man

is what Obama said to Mac at the performance. Then from a safe disance and a day late, the campaign releases a statement.

Re: I'm just messin' with you man

Some people here would take you a bit more seriously if you ever uttered a peep about McCain's sexist behavior.  You're part of a movement that is trying to help elect McCain (or at least a portion of your movement is), yet you seem to turn a blind eye to this kind of thing.  It's actually fascinating to see the mental gymnastics required by some to constantly condemn Obama while giving McCain a free pass.

Re: I'm just messin' with you man

You want serious?  Take a look at catfish's page on Alegre's Corner.  Here are some  sample comments:

If we can get the AA supers to throw him under the bus  (0.00 / 0)
we have a chance.

If he is president, nobody can hold him accountable  (4.00 / 4)
because they'll be too afraid of being called racist.

That is why I will not vote for him.

Don't give this PUMA the time of day.

So Barack Obama is now personally responsible for Bernie Mac's jokes? He'll be the funniest President ever. I loved him in Ocean's 11.

Do you honestly have no concept of "I DIDN'T SAY THAT, SOMEBODY ELSE DID?!"

What about McCain? Any thoughts?

Did Obama make the joke? No.  Did McCain SAY cunt, majestic Gorilla, Chelsea joke? Yes.  HUGE DIFFERENCE. HUGE.  What is your position on McCain's documented words (words he owns himself) as evidence of his views on women vs. ANYTHING Obama has said?  Who is worse?  Who would define what 'loving women' means more to your liking I wonder?

I would like to know catfish which candidate for president you prefer based on what each has said to and about women?

Lately, Obama has been worse

Sorry. I am willing to be persuaded that he has seen the light and changed his ways.

Look, people need to get used to seeing women in high-profile positions of power. Condi Rice was a good thing. As was Madeline Albright, Janet Reno, Meg Whitman, Carly Fiorina, and Hillary Clinton.

Calling women with mental distress seeking abortions "feeling blue" was condescending. You either trust women and doctors to make this decision or you do not. But don't get all paternalistic on us. And DO NOT condone calling your mother and your sister whores to explain what hypothetical means, and be too much of a wuss to say anything to Mac's face.

by catfish2 2008-07-15 05:24PM | 0 recs
Re: Lately, Obama has been worse

I think he was trying to explain the difference between mental illness and mental distress. And that IS the difference, and it is important. He was trying to say that he was for late-term abortions for medical reasons, and that the mental distress needed to be medical, not psychological. If you don't believe me, try giving anti-psychotics or anti-depressants to someone without illness. They might be okay for a little while, but it will slowly screw them up bigtime.

C'mon, give it a rest

I don't want to read about this.  I don't care how sexist McCain is in his private life; it's his policies and public life that matter.

Let it go.  We all know that McCain has a foul sailor's mouth.  None of us are voting for him anyway (at least none of us who would care one way or another on this).

My outrage meter is well beyond breaking by this time.

is so inconsistent with this kind of hostility towards women.

by Geekesque 2008-07-15 02:50PM | 0 recs

Frankly how he addresses women in public and talks about them from the bully pulpit "no abortions if they're feeling blue" matters more than some tasteless jokes he told to a private group.

Re: Slander is your friend I guess

Catfish, please read this.

I took the time to read your page at Alegre's Corner, as linked above.

Do you actually think there's a chance in hell that Hillary Clinton will magically be the Democratic nominee this year?  Short of Barack Obama's death it will not happen.

You guys didn't convince eight supers to switch, and even if by some freak of nature you did that's not going to make the slightest bit of difference.

You have taken the time to post at a website where members have joked about us here at MyDD hurting or killing them.  You've taken the time to post at a website where the members have seriously suggested they'd have to leave the country if Obama is elected, because you and your friends would not be safe.

You've taken the time to post at a site where the members have posted scenarios in which Obama supporters lynch PUMAs and Obama does nothing.

Your friends are delusional.  I mean that literally.  I'm not talking politics, either.  I'm being stone cold serious.  This is the Internet.  This isn't some kind of real life situation where you're on the run, rebelling against Skynet or anything.

You've absolutely become guilty of the worst accusations any of you Clinton folks tossed at Obama supporters.  You've completely bought in, drunk the kool aid, and have lost all sense of perspective.

That website is completely insane.  You aren't heroes.  You aren't special.  You aren't going to win.  You are simply an irrelevant tiny gathering that's clinging to a battle that's already over.

You let your support for Senator Clinton define you such that the underlying tribalism continues to this day.  This is not healthy.

Imagine the roles reversed.  If Clinton had won, but you had a cousin who was spending a fair bit of time trying to undermine her because Obama had lost and your cousin couldn't accept it?

Your friends have completely lost it.  Why can't you see that?  Are you as far gone?  This is not mentally healthy.

You did not read my page

because I said it will never happen. I said we can't afford to float such a rumor because we want the symbolic floor vote for the history books. If they think we're trying to overturn the nomination, they will never give Hillary a floor vote.

Pay them no attention then

If Clinton were the nominee and I had a crazy cousin per your scenario, I would pat said cousin on the head and say there there all will be OK.

by catfish2 2008-07-15 05:17PM | 0 recs
Re: Pay them no attention then

And if the cousin kept talking about how Hillary had some sort of secret plan that would ruin us? That she was secretly planning on instituting communism and taking down the male patriarchy by force? Would you care what he had to say? How long would it take before you lost respect for him?

by vcalzone 2008-07-15 07:50PM | 0 recs
Eh

His record on women's issues is horrid. I don't see it as inconsistant at all, nor do I find it relevant.

Obama did coke a little when he was a kid; should we ramble about that in regards to his policy on the War on Drugs?

Seriously.  I'm prObama.  I think McCain is a bastard.  Trust me when I tell you that it doesn't speak well of us that we're talking about this.

Not good enough.

The reporter, Norma Coile, references two guys named Wright and Larson who were said to have heard McCain tell the joke. They, however, were never reached for comment.

I don't doubt the sexism of John McCain. But the odor of mendacity about this charge is pretty strong.

I was dubious

since this is just absurd, even for McCain.  But the kos article has a link to the newspaper article this appeared in.

True to form, McCain "does not recall" telling the joke, despite the fact that it was told in public, apparantly in front of an audience.

by semiquaver 2008-07-15 02:57PM | 0 recs
Re: I was dubious

Another gem from the article:

McCain sparked a controversy early in his Senate campaign with another "joke," when he referred to the retirement community of Leisure World as "Seizure World."
Keep in mind that that incident was in early 1986, when McCain was only 49.  That his campaign blasts anyone for even imagined references to his age is the real joke here.

I'm sure more PUMAs and no25centers, like catfish, will try to spin this so that it isn't really as bad as the Bernie Mac jokes. It's funny how outraged they were at Obama over those jokes, which were told by someone else, and yet when McCain says something even worse they excuse it away.

Re: Taylor Marsh...

"If one didn't no better one would suspect Hillary's campaign is pushing people to publicly threaten support for McSame if Hillary's not VP"

I disagree, for two reasons.

First, Senator Clinton is better then that, she doesn't need to threaten, her qualifications for VP stand or fall without threats.

Secondly, PUMAS are so out of control and pumped up on their own bloated self-importance, it's not like they would do what anyone from Senator Clinton's staff asked them to do anyway.

The are a rolling ball of irrationality and cognitive dissonance. No one can talk sense to them at this point.

Re: Taylor Marsh...

Hillary has no control over these crazies.  She comes out in support of Obama, and they see her putting out secret code and that "she's only doing what she feels that she has to."  She goes on the stump for Obama and they can only think about roll call votes at the convention.

It's a cult of personality gone horribly awry, in which the cult no longer cares about what Hillary has to say and instead they act upon what they think Hillary secretly wants them to do.  Creepy.

The main reason I even bother responding to the dead-end types like catfish is to point out the rank hypocrisy in supporting McCain and ignoring his sexist statements while parsing every single word and breath uttered by Obama and anyone within 10 miles of him.

Re: McCain thinks rape is FUNNY.

Reread my post and try to grasp the meaning of the entire post. I don't have a video of Obama  Laughing does the author have a video of McCain telling the joke? Is this really the path you want to travel down, vote for my guy because he is not quite as disgusting as the other guy. Is this really the type of fingerpointing you want to get into. This is what turns people off and makes them decide not to participate. Since voter turnout is supposed to be key to an Obama victory do you really want to turn them off so they will stay home. Is driving people away from Obama really your goal. Like I said I live in a state that McCain will win by 15 points my vote does not matter. I can vote for Mickey Mouse, Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama and it will not affect the outcome of the election. I have never said I want him to lose, I just want to hold him accountable. But some of you seem bound and determined to piss off as many people as you can.

Re: McCain thinks rape is FUNNY.

Obama publicly laughed at sexist jokes last week.
Gee, don't ya hate the internet? Your words stay there for everyone to see.

You make a completely unsubstantiated claim and I post a link from a newspaper article. Which of us has the most support for their claim?

Is this really the path you want to travel down, vote for my guy because he is not quite as disgusting as the other guy.
There is no comparison. You are knocking Obama for things said by others. I am holding McCain guilty of words that came out of his own mouth. It isn't that Obama isn't as bad as McCain, it's that McCain has a history of this kind of thing and Obama has none. That's none, as in zero. All you can point to are things said by other people.

I have never said I want him to lose,
Maybe not, but you sure do your best to tear him down. How is that helpful? You hold Obama to impossibly high standards and blame him for things said by other people while at the same time trying to minimize the words that come out of McCain's mouth.

Given your posting history and your antipathy towards Obama, you will have to forgive me if I don't consider you to be a progressive Dem.

Re: McCain thinks rape is FUNNY.

Come on you are being so transparent. Just days ago this site had several articles posted about the Bernie Mac event. "Just Messin with ya man" you know it I know it and 90+% of the people on this site know it. You can play that "you got a video crap all you want but this ain't my first rodeo" and I am not buying it. I never said McCains joke which there is no video of is okay. Maybe you have heard of the glass houses thing? Are you sure that you want to go down that road knowing that there is a stone that can be thrown at Obama that is much more recent than 20 years ago. Try really hard to understand what I am saying here, think outside of your echo chamber. Do you really think that this is a can of worms that you want to open, since it could backlash and end up with egg on Obama's face. How many darned cliches do I have to use to get you to pay attention to my meaning and not just react out of your emotion.

by RedstateLib 2008-07-15 07:03PM | 0 recs
Re: McCain thinks rape is FUNNY.

You are the transparent one here. You should be careful talking about glass houses. You keep trying to make the case that something a comedian said makes Obama guilty of some offense. You go so far as to claim he laughed at the joke when you have absolutely nothing to back up that claim. You pulled that from who knows where. At the same time, you try to minimize what McCain said. Words from the actual candidate's own mouth. Trying to equate the two is ludicrous.

You are right, I am beginning to react out of emotion. The emotion caused by listening to you spout the same stupid talking points over and over again no matter how many times they are debunked.

Your effort to equate a man like Obama, who has never said or done anything remotely comparable to McCain's offenses is enough to piss off a monk.

McCain makes a joke about Janet Reno being Chelsea's father and you shrug it off. McCain makes a joke about having stopped beating his wife as a response to a question about why he seems to be avoiding associating with an official in his own party who actually did get charged with assault against a woman. McCain tells the gorilla joke and you think it is no worse than Obama not chastising a comedian for a bad, sexist joke. McCain laughs on camera when someone refers to Hillary as a bitch and what do we get from you? Pure silence. McCain calls his wife a 'trollop' and 'c*nt' in public and you say nothing. Obama scratches his face during a speech and you manage to nurse your outrage for months.

I give up maybe you can get the Media to run with the McCain joke story. Maybe you can create some big story around it. Re: McCain thinks rape is FUNNY.

McCain's joke and all of his other jokes over the years paint a picture of him. Combine that with his record on voting on women's issues and you have a legitimate attack theme.

On the other hand, Obama's voting record can stand up to scrutiny, while all you can find to smear him with is things said by other people. I'll take that comparison any day.
