Patty Solis-Doyle to go to work for Obama?

This article by Ben Smith on Politico has been getting a lot of buzz today.  There are a number of articles about it on Google News, right now, some of them rather entertaining.

Ben Smith is reporting that there are talks under way about Hillary strategist Patty Solis-Doyle, who was fired in March, coming to work for Obama.  I'll try not to characterize it too much, because that might be dangerous.  Ben Smith leaves some questions unanswered.  This is such a bombshell, though, that I can't believe we won't hear more about it soon.  If there are more Hillary staffers preparing to jump ship and climb on the USS Obama, that's a good sign this thing isn't going to turn into a scorched earth take-it-to-the-floor strategy after June 3.

Top Hillarylander mulls Obama job
By BEN SMITH | 5/19/08 1:31 PM EST

Hillary Rodham Clinton's former campaign manager and confidante, Patti Solis Doyle, and Sen. Barack Obama's top adviser have informally discussed the former Clintonite's going to work for the Obama campaign in the general election.

Solis Doyle's possible hiring is a major breach not just in Clinton's campaign but in the political universe known as "Hillaryland," a term Solis Doyle reportedly coined after joining the Clintons in 1991 as the first lady's personal scheduler. She was forced out of Hillary Clinton's campaign in February amid internal criticism about her spending practices and preparation for upcoming contests.

"I've talked to Patti throughout. I know that she wants to be helpful in a general election campaign, and we appreciate that," Obama's chief strategist, David Axelrod told Politico, declining directly to answer the question of whether he and Solis Doyle had discussed her working for the campaign...

A lot of Clinton campaign staffers will end up in Obama's campaign. That way they have jobs through November.  This is pretty normal.  But don't expect to see Mark Penn on deck.

If not on the deck...

Why not on the plank?

I don't get this story.  It specifically mentions the general election.  Why is this seen as treasonable in any way to Clinton, who will also be campaigning for Obama?

I don't think Obama would want her watching soaps on the clock.

This concept of 'treason' and 'judas' from Clinton partisans is the reason why the campaign floundered. People were hired and kept simply cause they were 'loyal' and 'trusted'. Well that is not the best policy. You have to hire and fire on merit.

Thats a basic management lesson. Obama is a capable leader.

yes. But once you hire them you owe them some loyalty and they do the same.

Re: Patty Solis-Doyle to go to work for Obama?

managing the loyalty vrs capability balance in their team is the difficult, vital job of the leader (and no-one else)/

Get it too far wrong on either side and you are dealing with either incompetence or mercenaries.

Seems like Hillary had difficulty finding the balance in time. Maybe Obama was lucky - his fist picks had the skills? Or maybe he has the judgment. We'll probably find out in due course.

I cant believe the Obama campaign would be stupid enough to hire this loser.

more axelrod spin... doyle's response :  "I'm for Hillary, I have been for 17 years. This thing isn't over.  But I'm a Democrat and if Obama's the nominee, I will do whatever I can to get him elected and make sure the party is unified."
