Should we be be pushing Troopergate so hard?

I just happened to channel flip to O'Reilly's show tonight and he had two very beautiful women on, neither of whom I recognized, who said they had read through the Palin emails and found plenty of grounds with which she would have had to fire Walt Monegan.

So far the emails themselves aren't posted anywhere, but the following are being reported on the right wing blogs such as this one:

According to the papers filed by Palin's legal team, that was not the only instance of insubordination from Monegan:

   * 12/9/07: Monegan holds a press conference with Hollis French to push his own budget plan.

   * 1/29/08: Palin's staffers have to rework their procedures to keep Monegan from bypassing normal channels for budget requests.

   * February 2008: Monegan publicly releases a letter he wrote to Palin supporting a project she vetoed.

   * June 26, 2008: Monegan bypassed the governor's office entirely and contacted Alaska's Congressional delegation to gain funding for a project.

Now, we should wait for the emails to be published somewhere to read and make up our own minds.  But it's quite possible that the evidence will create at least a reasonable doubt that he was fired for failing to fire her ex-brother-in-law.  And come October, if it looks like she is innocent of the claims, public opinion could turn in her favor if it looks like the investigation was politically motivated.  It doesn't even have to be politically motivated.  It just has to look that way.

Until we have all the facts, we ought not to push the issue too hard.  As a lawyer I can tell you that asking a question that appears strong can be disaster if you really don't know the answer.

I think we should maintain our skepticism, and focus on the points that matter.  Her ideology is radically reactionary.  She's in over her head when it comes to national and international politics.  She lies.  She hides from the press.  And McCain's choice of her was impulsive.

Other than that, ignore her.  The economy is tanking and McCain looks like a deer with headlights in his eyes.

"We" aren't. The Obama campaign is letting the press do its job on its own.

(God I'm sick of all these LEAVE BRITTANY SARAH ALONE! comments and diaries. But freedom of speech means freedom to be foolish.)

Of course, I didn't say we should leave her alone.  But those emails do suggest a very real possibility that this will blow up in our face.

Re: Should we be be pushing Troopergate so hard?

Like I said, the Obama campaign is hands off on Troopergate. Nothing will, "blow up in our face," since the press is pushing it.

That the McNixon campaign has decided to stonewall the investigation ensures it will be a festering sore for them until election day, which is better for Obama than any finding would have been.

So stop blaming "us" for what we aren't even doing. And stop being afraid to see damage inflicted on the only thing keeping McDesperate's head above water, namely, Caribou Barbi.

I agree that this is a scandal with its own momentum and that it is unproductive to try and build up expectations concerning the ultimate result.  There isn't much of a "drip, drip, drip" factor here - much of what leaks out is positive for Palin, so let's just wait for the end product.

Re: Should we be be pushing Troopergate so hard?
Umm, honestly, until the actual emails show up with some damn solid backup, I don't buy it.
We've seen already that these people have absolutely no problem lying through their teeth every chance they get, even over really stupid stuff. In fact, I can't think of a single fact that has come out of the McCain/Palin campaign for a while now. Even when they try to justify or walk-back their lies, they lie.
So, until we see actual evidence with a time-stamp and independent verification, I have to assume, based on all available evidence, that the "witness statements" whom we know nothing about, is a giant pile of bullshit.
Should we bank on Palin being crooked in this particular way? No. Should we use her lawsuit and attempt to stonewall and "lawyer-away" any investigation into her questionable decisions to tie a Bush-noose around her neck? Abso-fucking-lutely.

Well, the stonewalling is an issue all by itself.  But that's different.  Point is, we don't know what happened.  Yet.

Re: Should we be be pushing Troopergate so hard?

Since the GOP will spike the investigation so there won't be any official finding until after election day, there is no way Troopergate can blow up on the Democrats.  All you're doing is buying into GOP talking points.

Re: Should we be be pushing Troopergate so hard?

No. Let the investigation take its course. If the investigators are professional about their job, the truth will come out. Also, they should try NOT to release any findings until after the election. Recall that part of the US Atty scandal involved not just attempts to speed up investigations for better political timing, but failure to slow them down as well.

LEAHY:  Would it have affected the prosecution, would it have affected your ability to bring the prosecution if you had just waited a few weeks until the election was over?

SCHLOZMAN:  The Department of Justice does not time prosecutions to elections.

LEAHY:  Well, yes, they do. That's what the manual says.

The metanarrative of them trying to shut down the investigation will be more useful than hearings and subpoenaed officials for months and months.  I find it unlikely that she would be found guilty anyway, and while an investigation would be embarrassing, the push to block the investigation is downright scandalous.  Remember, it's always the coverup that gets you.
