Women's Voices Registering Voters for General Election Only

There is a lot of sturm and drang here over nothing but a group that has done good work in the past and is doing good work now for the general election.. Women's Voices Women's Vote is and has registered voters for THE GENERAL ELCTION IN NORTH CAROLINA.  This is not in any way an attempt to interfere with the vote in the North Carolina primary.

Below is portions of an email I recieved from Becky Bond, Political director from Working Assets/CREDO, a completely non partisan group, even in this primary election, a non partisan group.  They have funded WVWV and are privy to their research, one of the few voting rights groups that does research, which has shown that the greatest spike in the desire to register is right after the deadline for the primary has passed.  It's human nature to kick themselves for missing the deadline.  So they do the registration packets and the calls in the voices of the demographic they are targeting.  They do not just target unmarried women but many other underreepresented groups in the electorate.

Mike Lux, an Obama supporter is on the board as well as John Podesta.  This is the typical Obama Hullablaoo over nothing at all.....and we know who the baselelsss suspicion monger is on this blog

Here"s the email.

"Let me add some info to the debate that i think will be helpful. this
is information i know first hand. working assets has funded WVWV since
it started in 2004. we've seen the research and the field plans grow
over time.

WVWV is the only voter registration group with two cycles of
replicable randomized control studies showing the impact and cost
efficiency of their mail and call based voter registration and GOTV
work. here are a few things you may not know about WVWV.

1) WVWV doesn't just target unmarried women. they target hispanics and
african americans. so it's not surprising at all that they are
targeting black voters in n.c. they've done this in partnership with
organizations like the NAACP in 2004 and National Council of La Raza
more recently. they use their methods and infrastructure from the
unmarried women work to get minorities on the roll. for instance,
field groups and funders will pay them to do mail-based voter reg on
african americans who don't live in the urban core where they can be
cost efficiently registered via door knocking and mass site
registration (at bus stops for example). so where minority voters may
be more geographically dispersed, WVWV is employed to do that
registration by mail order.

2) there is always a spike in voter registration around primaries
AFTER the registration deadline has passed. this is the best time to
register voters. research confirms this.  around primaries people are
reminded that they need to register in time for the general. WVWV has
done a lot of research in this area. they know when people are most
likely to register. unfortunately, what makes sense in registering the
largest aggregate number of voters for the general election at the
lowest cost is having a confusing effect in the N.C. primary which is
hotly contested and very charged.

3) WVWV has done a lot of research on how to layer communications so
as to have the greatest registration rate at the lowest cost from its
mail in programs. the calls increase the open rate of the envelopes
with the voter registration forms. i've seen research they have done
looking at volunteer calls before registration packets arrive v.
robocalls. also i've seen research on the effect of who the call is
from based on the gender and ethnicity of the targeted voter. are
calls from a generic voter participation organization the most
effective? or from an individual with a name and way of speaking that
is similar to the target demographic.

4) WVWV is not a clinton-associated organization. yes john podesta is
on the board, but so is mike lux and william mcnary -- both obama
people.

WVWV has made big gains in turning out african american men and
married hispanic women in the last two years. i think what is a
general election strategy which has caused a wrinkle via
misunderstanding in a primary context."

I think this explains a lot of reasoning, rationale and research and that their work should help all Democrats in November.

oh god.  this is what the "outrage" was all about?

For the GE - not the primary?  Jeez, I think some Obama supporters need to chill - because they are starting to look really, really bad

With all the complaints you'd think

they would have quit until after the state primary so as not to confuse the voters...

Re: With all the complaints you'd think

No one has presented any evidence of voters being confused.

Except all of those people complaining you mean?

Re: With all the complaints you'd think

Yeah, like who? The article presents no evidence. It makes a statement it doesn't back up.

I cannot believe the blogosphere is going after this progressive organization. I'm just staggered.

Sanity

Thank you for some sanity. This is one of the ugliest, basest smears out of a Democratic campaign I've ever seen. I can't believe the level of debate the Obama campaign has sunk to. Why should these people support Obama if he's the nominee after his wholesale trashing of their reputation?

Is there nothing that Obama and his supporters aren't willing to piss on in order to win the primary? I've never seen a Democrat so willing to fracture this party in the primary at the expense of support in the general.

Re: Sanity

Yeah, this is the first time the Obama campaign's actions have physically sickened me. The suppression charge is incredibly divisive, and it is against a group who's history of doing the solid work of voter registration Obama is very familiar with. And yet he has his campaign pushing charges of Clinton allies suppressing African American voters. He will stop at nothing, and destroy any Democrat in his drive for the presidency.

Get over yourself.

What did the Obama campaign have to do with this? I posted the diaries. If you have a problem, it's with me.

Don't be coy, see my link above.

Re: Get over yourself.

I followed the link, and it doesn't say what you said at all.

In a conference call with reporters, Obama aides tentatively accepted the Women's Voices Women Vote apology for ill-timed robocalls, but simultenously compared the calls to deliberate voter suppression tactics.

"The group has apologized and indicated that it was inadvertent," said Obama campaign counsel Bob Bauer, adding that the apology is "presumably to be taken at face value."

But Pricey Harrison, a local Obama supporter on the call, said it was "a possibly deliberate attempt to disenfranchise voters."

Bauer also said some aspects of the calls violated the law and, speaking in general, said, "One of the tools of choice in inducing voters suppression is the use of robo-callls that mask their identity."

Did they say that Hillary's camp is behind it?  Did they specifically accuse them of anything?

Nope.  But you still jump to accusing them of it.

Ridiculous that you can't even see what a hypocrite you are.

Re: Get over yourself.

Oh please. Who would have any interest in suppressing the black vote in NC. Are you really as silly as you sound. Of course not. You are spinning the the Obama story.

Re: Get over yourself.

Creative editing, read the next line:
"There are some arguing that this was a pro-Clinton conspiracy"

But even in the section you selectively quoted, follow the logic. Who is the campaign accusing of "inducing voters suppression," Obama supporters?

Sorry, we've seen this pattern of race charges too many times before to fall for your "Who? Me?" excuses. It is crystal clear what the Obama campaign is attempting to do here, and it sickens me.

Re: Get over yourself.

The campaign didn't accuse anyone of anything.  But, they suggested that it was WVWV that was behind it - they were behind it, so that's not far-fetched or anything.

The line I omitted is Ben Smith's analysis, which is not pertinent to anything that was said on that call.  Now, a little reading comprehension practice on your part can help avoid embarrassing posts such as the above one in the future.

by Cycloptichorn 2008-04-30 02:30PM | 0 recs
Re: Get over yourself.

And why don't you tell us what was said on that call? "Some" could very well refer to some people on the call. Since Bauer is quoted saying WVWV apologized no one was "suggesting" WVWV was behind it, they were arguing that WVWV was engaged in voter suppression. Smith's note that Obama supporters are on the board of WVWV shoots down the Obama campaign's implication that a Clinton-aligned group is suppressing black votes.

Your dumb act is too transparent.

Re: Get over yourself.

Only if you believe that every member of a board of directors of a company is not only actively involved with the company's actions but has the ability to change those actions.  This is a farcical position.

http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.co m/2008/04/north_carolina_ag_opens_invest .php

The NC AG is opening an investigation into these calls, which he says are 'violating the law.'  So please get off of your idiotic high horse.

If you look back to my original posting, nobody on that call - and nobody in Obama's camp - has specifically accused Hillary of having any direct involvement with this.  They DID accuse the company of engaging in actions which are potentially illegal and potentially voter suppression - and it would seem the NC AG agrees with at least some of their argument.

Re: Get over yourself.

You just love tearing down Democrats, don't you? From the NC AG

"Regardless of the motivation, the robo-calls violated the law and they needed to stop," Cooper said.
The calls violated state law by failing to disclose who sponsored the call and failing to offer the
organization's contact information to get the calls to stop.

So WVWV screwed up by not including a disclaimer on the call. Not exactly voter suppression.

This is not a "company", it is a non-partisan non-profit. The board has complete control over what it does. What the Obama campaign was doing with that conference call for reporters is clear, but if you have such definitive information about what was said on the call why don't you post a transcript?

Re: Women's Voices Registering

Unfortunately there are a couple of Obama fruitcakes out there, namely Johnson and MBNYC, who are peddling this nonsense all the time. There's a constituency for it because in their little world Hillary is the queen of the night the source of all the worlds evil, while Obama is Parsifal the good knight come to cleanse the world of her wrongdoing. If you think I'm exaggerating their comic book view of the world just take a look at some of their diaries and postings which might have been written in North Korea. These folks have either got it bad or they are being paid to broadcast this bilge. Either way any of their pronouncements need to be treated with some scepticism.

Re: Women's Voices Registering Voters

Mike Lux is a closet Clintonista who pretends to be for Obama.  This group did robo calls that were targeting AAs in a not very good way.  They got caught with their hands in the cookie jar.
