MoDo on the Democratic Convention

Maureen Dowd is ON this week. This column is a homerun. It's an outrage that the Clintons demanded speaking slots at the convention and then their supporters whined when the slots weren't enough. They should still be apologizing for their disgraceful behavior during the primary. At the very least, Bill Clinton should have done a tour of black churches to beg forgiveness for his racebaiting. Though at this point, I guess it would be better if he just went away and concentrated on whatever it is he does in his free time when Hillary's away.

Here are the best parts of her column. I agree 100%:

Obama also allowed Hillary supporters to insert an absurd statement into the platform suggesting that media sexism spurred her loss and that "demeaning portrayals of women ... dampen the dreams of our daughters." This, even though postmortems, including the new raft of campaign memos leaked by Clintonistas to The Atlantic -- another move that undercuts Obama -- finger Hillary's horrendous management skills.

[snip]

It would have been better to put this language in the platform:
"A woman who wildly mismanages and bankrupts a quarter-of-a-billion-dollar campaign operation, and then blames sexism in society, will dampen the dreams of our daughters."

Amen! Though I don't agree that Hillary horrid incompetence (losing an election where she'd banked 200 superdelegates and was way ahead) hurts the chances of women in the future.

Hillary knows that demanding a roll call vote will hurt the Democratic party. But since she's crazy/hateful towards Obama, she doesn't care. How delicious would it be for her if Obama lost? Very. She yearns for this, and as does her husband.

PS: SEBELIUS FOR VP! Break that glass ceiling with a competent talented politician! Show the world that we can INDEED elect a woman and that Hillary lost because she and her husband are sociopaths!

Not helpful.

Where is the Un-rec button.

unhelpful?

why is it that your standards for democrats are radically different?  earlier i saw you calling other deadenders for criticizing obama (maybe deservingly) yet here is a diary that calls a sitting democratic senator and a former democratic president sociopaths and is 'unhelpful'?

Re: unhelpful?

Because, as noted below, this poster is trying to bait people, he is LOOKING for over the top responses.

So, rather then go nutzoid at him, which is obviously what he wants....

Oh, and come on CG?  You're calling ME out for not defending Clinton STRONG ENOUGH or smacking down EVERY poster according to some strength rating?

The other poster I went at I have been exchanging elbows with for months, he/she comes into threads, bombs dropping, and virtually expects to to be elbowed back..I try to bait him/her when ever I can.

Oh, and as far as being fair and balanced, are you SURE I am the poster you want to go it (you seem bent out of shape at me since I rec'ed that MSOC diary...that's a complete other issue, I had been posting on My Left Wing for a while, and I have a lot of respect for her....so we will let that one lay for now....)

If you want to go back and look at a history of calling out people for getting out of line, Do you REALLY want to compare my history to yours?

I was, as an Obama supporter, calling out other Obama supporters WAY BACK in the primary wars, my memory is, you really didn't do the same, call out Clinton folks who went to far on Obama.

Anyway, you seem angry in general lately, calling that diarist BRAVE on that other thread which was clearly a fanning the primary war thread kind of cancels out you calling me out here, IMHO.....

Re: MoDo on the Democratic Convention

I think you missed the day in expository writing when they covered "knowing your audience."

Good luck with this one  :)

Re: MoDo on the Democratic Convention

The Clintons seem to come up with a new irritation every week.  What a great day for this country it will be when Obama takes the oath of office.  With no drama!

are you aware that you are on a progressive site?

and if so - you are promoting an article by a columnist that coined the term 'obambi' as well as mocking the value in removing "demeaning portrayals of women ... dampen the dreams of our daughters." as part of the democratic platform?????????

its stunning what has become of some in this party...

I don't think you get the joke, CG.

:)

Sadly, I think I do.

yes - if its a joke i certainly missed it.

could you please let me in on it?

Re: yes - if its a joke i certainly missed it.

I'm not convinced that the diarist is here under honest pretenses.  I could be wrong, of course, but this seems to have been written in exactly the right way to piss off certain posters.

Re: yes - if its a joke i certainly missed it.

The joke is that hillary lost because she was completely incompetent and then retroactively (after it was over) people whined about sexism somehow deciding a primary where 58% of the voters were women.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that IF there was rampant sexism, Hillary would have won easily. Playing the victim/building sympathy is a very effective strategy in a Democratic primary that largely consists of liberal/feminist voters. That's why Obama had to tip toe around her lack of experience. He couldn't mention that she pretty much just focused on historic preservation (Save America's Treasures) as first lady after her healthcare initiative bombed because he would have faced a backlash.

Every time Obama/any surrogate uttered anything even remotely sexist, they paid the price dearly. Look at New Hampshire. Look at Jesse Jackson, Jr. He was sentenced to purgatory and never allowed on TV again by the campaign. And some people are still miffed about that.

I would suggest

That you delete this diary and repost it such that it isn't intended to create a flamewar to end all flamewars.

Please.  I say this as someone who went to the mat for Barack Obama here during the primaries.  This is way too hot, as written.

Re: I would suggest

Ehhh. As far as I'm concerned, removing the Clintons from the Democratic party is the Lord's work. They're poison and are trying to undermine Obama any way possible. We must keep the Clinton-hate alive and never forget!

by Dale Johnson 007 2008-08-13 04:33PM | 0 recs
Re: I would suggest

I say this as someone who doesn't particularly like Hillary Clinton (though I do respect her) and has a nuanced view of Bill Clinton:

If you aren't a troll you're incredibly misguided.

Re: MoDo on the Democratic Convention

"Sociopaths"

I don't think that word means what you think it means.
A fan of MoDo, are we?

Barack Obama wrinkles.

Just slightly, and just when he has to wear a flak jacket over his blue oxford shirt.

The media behemoth slouching after the senator is scouring his every word, expression, bead of sweat, basketball shot and accessory -- are those hiking boots too Bremer? Are the sunglasses too rapper? Will he leave enough time for his glittery groupie, Carla Bruni? -- for hints of imperfection that would foretell lacunae in presidential judgment.

The One, as McCain aides sardonically call Obama, glided through Afghanistan, Iraq and Jordan, girding his messianic loins for the inevitable kvetching he would face in Israel as skeptical Jews "try to get a better sense of what's in Obama's kishkes." So said Nathan Diament of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, in The Daily News, defining "kishkes" as Yiddish for gut.

Right.

Re: MoDo on the Democratic Convention

Ha ha ha. That's nearly incomprehensible, like many (most) Maureen Down columns!!! She seems to be on crack sometimes.

This one was better. Cutting satire.

by Dale Johnson 007 2008-08-13 04:30PM | 0 recs
First of all, anyone who

goes along with anything MoDo cannot be progressive, liberal or anything.  Knowing how much her nastiness helped and pushed the hate-the-democrats meme with her trashing of Gore, Kerry, as well as the Clintons and Obama ought to be a clue.

by Jjc2008 2008-08-13 04:22PM | 0 recs
Re: First of all, anyone who

I'm not going to defend Maureen Dowd. But...I'd suggest a revision of your description of her. She's clearly a progressive. She's just not a Democrat or a partisan of any kind. She values lobbing (occasionally) sharp satire at politicians over advancing progressive policies.

She's clearly harder on the Republicans than the Democrats, though. She's just not loyal to us...which is frustrating (if you bother to read her - I usually don't).

by Dale Johnson 007 2008-08-13 04:38PM | 0 recs
Well undera nu-definition of

progressive, one that clealy includes hate mongers like you, yea she probably is a progressive in the same vein as many here and on big orange.

Re: MoDo on the Democratic Convention

I don't like Maureen Dowd. I don't care about the platform addition re: women, although I do think it is supposed to imply that the Democratic Party was sexist, which I disagree with.

I recc'd this because most of the anti-Obama stuff here makes the top of the Rec List. Simpleminded and petty, I know, but Maureen and Hillary bring it out in me.

by Lolis 2008-08-13 04:33PM | 0 recs
Re: MoDo on the Democratic Convention

I actually don't care about the platform addition either, since the platform is a silly thing that's basically meaningless.

Maureen Dowd is kind of an idiot. She drove me crazy attacking the Clintons in the 90s. But....some (brave) feminist had to stand up and actually call Bill out...

by Dale Johnson 007 2008-08-13 04:35PM | 0 recs
Re: MoDo on the Democratic Convention

Yeah, I went to colleged in the late 90's and was a Women's Studies major. I wrote whole papers on how Bill Clinton's policies hurt women. Feminists back then did not love Bill or Hillary Clinton. They couldn't even get a White House meeting.

I'm glad to see that Hillary Clinton is inspiring women to become more feminist conscious but to me she is as authentic on this issue as Edwards was on poverty.

Re: MoDo on the Democratic Convention

The diarist is a typical Clinton-hater who praises Maureen Dowd when she slams the Clintons, and rebukes her when she slams Obama.

by truthseeker77 2008-08-13 04:39PM | 0 recs
Re: MoDo on the Democratic Convention

When does she slam Obama? Her hits on him are pretty weak.

I usually don't enjoy her columns.

Dowd is right about Clinton

but the boomer womens entitlement movement must be appeased.

As crazy as he sounded, Father Pfleger was 100% right about Hillary and her most faithful.

Ridiculous

The platform thing is kind of stupid and there are some concerns about how the camps are reconciling about the convention, but this stream of ad hom is absurd.

This is just MoDo doing her MoDo thing, making a bunch of wild leaps and pretending to know the innermost thoughts of strangers.
