Hillary Clinton to end her campaign for President?

Don't shoot the messenger but according to Drudge the Hillary campaign is talking about exiting the campaign amid collapsing numbers. APparently there is a debate going on within the Clinton campaign. The issue is how badly does she want to be embarassed?

A Hillary exit would be exactly what John Edwards is hoping will happen. Maybe Edwards tag team was not so crazy after all.

I wonder how bad a defeat she can take in New Hampshire. What is Obama gets 50% and Hillary comes in third? At some point she will not be able to continue.

I've also been reading that she is beginning to run low on funds and her funders are abandoning her.

TALK OF HILLARY EXIT ENGULFS CAMPAIGNS
Mon Jan 07 2008 09:46:28 ET

Facing a double-digit defeat in New Hampshire, a sudden collapse in national polls and an expected fund-raising drought, Senator Hillary Clinton is preparing for a tough decision: Does she get out of the race? And when?!

"She can't take multiple double-digit losses in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada," laments one top campaign insider. "If she gets too badly embarrassed, it will really harm her. She doesn't want the Clinton brand to be embarrassed."

Key players in Clinton's inner circle are said to be split. James Carville is urging her to fight it out through at least February and Super Tuesday, where she has a shot at thwarting Barack Obama in a big state. But others close to the former first lady now see no possible road to victory, sources claim.

Sourcing Drudge?  This isn't a wingnut site you know?

Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign for Presid

Thats the thing Jerome: Given the Hillary campaigns close relationship with Drudge- remember how the fundraising numbers for Hillary were initially leaked to Drudge (misinformation and all)?- I thought they might have been summoned to put out the floating baloon.

Only time will tell but we also owe it to ourselves to ask how much of a battering are we prepared for the Clintons to endure. We need her in the Senate and we don't want Bill Clinton reduced to the status of a windbag.

The Obama folks

may be celebrating way too early.

I think Clinton and Edwards will fight all the way.

Re: The Obama folks

As much as I wish this to be true, I agree... I don't think its happening.  Not unless she is trying to cut some deal with Obama for something.

Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign for Presid

This may be as reliable as Drudge's whole "Edward's love child" thing, care of the National Enquirer.  Do have to wonder though...this turn of events has to take a toll on a campaign's ability to slog it through...

Bad Ass Brotha

She needs to stand down.

Rumor is, before Obama announced his White House run the Clinton team dispatched Vernon Jordan to disuade him from running. Through Jordan, they asked Obama what he wanted to make him stand down.

Obama replied, "I want the White House."

Damn.

and even besides the wingnut source, drudge poses this as a POSSSIBLE RUMOR not a definitive statement like you do.

I'm not a Clinton supporter, but I don't buy this at all.  Drudge is making this one up.

Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign

I doubt it as well, but it makes for great talk.

Then will spend all day denying this stuff.

The Obama folks are playing hardball now.

The same sort of hardball he's going to play with the Repubs.

No, that's the sort of hardball I assume the Clintons are plotting against Obama.

I mean, they do have a track record here.

Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign

Maybe so, but Hillary's answering the question, anyhow:

"Whatever happens tomorrow, we're going on," Clinton told the CBS "Early Show."

"And we're going to keep going until the end of the process on February 5th. But I've always felt that this is going to be a very tough, hard-fought election, and I'm ready for that."

Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign for Presid

But the Obama campaign does not work with Sludge which the Hillary campaign does... Or don't you remember how Sludge broke the fundraising numbers?
Where do you think they got that info from?

This is whats called a "trial baloon". You put it out there and see if it floats and based on the reaction (prevailing wind) you make the decision.

Its a tough decision but once Hillary gets trounced in NH she's going to have to make the decision. Given the lowering of expectations going on its not surprising they are at least thinking about that eventuality.

Hillary: Sec. of State to Edwards/Obama

I love Hillary, but lord knows, she needs to step aside and let the new era of politics begin.

The strongest alliance, NOW and OVER TIME, is this:
Edwards - President
Obama - Vice President
Hillary Clinton - Secretary of State.
Her only enemies are domestic, and she (and Bill) could continue their awesome world missions.

They probably realize this themselves, and yet the media manipulation is working at cross-purposes.
But she could really stick it to them and drop out, and then Edwards and Obama could announce their alliance.

Since Obama is leading in the polls...ask him who he thinks should be in the top slot. If he is honest, I think he would conclude that John Edwards is the better prepared one, the more passionate one, and the one least likely to fuck up.

The candidates can break free of the Media stranglehold. They need to talk amongst themselves...

Re: Hillary: Sec. of State to Edwards/Obama

Man... I would love to live in that world. But I don't and you shouldn't either. Obama is in this for the win. Not only that but there is no evidence anywhere that suggests Edwards is less likely to make mistakes than Obama...

Also, I would much rather let the voters decide over the next few weeks who is most well equipped to be president than have some backroom deal between the three candidates.

Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign

IF this is a trial balloon (and I highly doubt it is,) it will not lead to her dropping out. Despite Obama's surge Hillary has a lot of support within the party and a strong campaign- she stays in AT LEAST through SC if not Feb 5th.

The best reason for her to drop out would be making an attempt to put the fight behind them and to get a spot within an Obama Administration. Since it is relatively clear that she has no interest in this there is no good reason for her to drop out... it isn't happening. We are in for a slugfest through Feb. 5.

by JDF 2008-01-07 06:17AM | 0 recs
Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign

She won't drop before Feb 5th... The ONLY way she does is if she starts trailing in most of the Feb 5 polls, especially Cali.   If she starts trailing in NY and NJ (which I don't think will happen, FTR) she will probably drop to avoid embarassment.

Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign for Presid

Classic, classic, classic Drudge stuff.  How stupid progressives are.  "Maybe her campaign leaked this as a trial balloon"... to test what, exactly?

Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign for Presid

The reaction Steve! The REACTION!

Remember a lot of people have donated time and more importantly a lot of money to her campaign. She can't very well just announce she's dropping out just like that...

Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign for Presid

The fact that you assign any credibility to a rumor from Drudge says a lot about you.

Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign for Presid

Look whether you like Drudge or not- and I don't- the fact that he is reporting this (there is now a denial from Hillary and a statement from Edwards) is news.

Hillary's campaign is supposedly talking about exiting, but they are denying it, Edwards is saying Hillary is out of juice.

You may not like it but that don't stop it from being the reality of what is being reported and buzzed about.

Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign for Presid

Now you're trying to say you don't believe it one bit, but it's still news?  Pretty weak dodge there, not to mention it's contradicted by your own diary and its title.

Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign for Presid

No I did not say I don't believe it. I said I don't like Drudge!

I'm sure the Clinton campaign has began talking about an exit strategy.

Think of them as a billion dollar corporation. You have to begin talking about an exit. You have interests, backers, etc.

When you're getting slapped around like they are you have to begin talking about what to do.

Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign for Presid

Again, the fact that you assign any credibility to a rumor from Drudge says a lot about you.

Look, there are a lot of progressives online who will repeat any rumor as long as it's negative about Hillary.  Don't be ashamed to admit you're one of them.  You have plenty of company.

As of when? People don't donate money to a floundering campaign but they will donate to a winner.

Thats just a sad fact of politics.

Hillary Clinton to end her campaign for President

Could be a trial balloon floated via Drudge. Except for all the disappointed supporters, I would advocate she does just that in this climate, exit the race. We are a nation of empiricists. Like new Coke (um not that coke) the  country needs to try Obama out and experience him as president. Then she should sit on the sidelines and watch this whole carnival unfold. Buyers remorse will no doubt set in and who knows she may well have a chance 4 years after an Obama debacle. As the African saying goes, "you never know tomorrow."  Plus she needs to deprive MSM of this hatred, who knows where their free floating hate will land next. Why should she continue to take incoming for Obama. The attention should now be focused on discovering our next would be president. Hillary should get out of the way and allow that discovery process to take flight.

Re: Hillary Clinton to end her campaign

If she loses by 20 points in NH and NV I could see her dropping out. I doubt it ends up that bad that soon. The problem is I don't see how Obama loses at this point. A major gaffe might open the door, but that aside he has too much momentum. Playing as the incumbent, as the inevitable nominee, for so long is coming back to bite Hillary hard. I expect her to stay in through Feb 5 where she'll probably win New York and Arkansas, though probably lose every other state.

Hillar will fight it out

No Offense. I do not care even if CNN reports it. Do you seriously think Hillary is going to quit after toiling for so many years to become President? This has been her goal for a very long time. And she is a strong woman. I am no Hillary fan. But she is not this weak. I fully expect her to fight it out.

I just see it as desperate rumor mongering by people who are not getting the scoops they used to.

by Pravin 2008-01-07 09:07AM | 0 recs
Re: Hillar will fight it out

She just broke down crying at a NH campaign event so I don't know what to think anymore.

Re: Hillar will fight it out

I cannot believe you.  Even after being called out on this blatant lie of saying she "broke down crying," you just keep running to more and more diaries to repeat it.
