Bob Kerrey apologizes for comments

Well as could be foreseen former Nebraska Senator Bob Kerrey has apologized to Senator Barack Obama.

Obama has accepted the apology.

The AP story by my nemesis Nedra Pickler includes the following quote:

"What I found myself getting into in Iowa - and it was my own fault - it was the wrong moment to do it and it was insulting," Kerrey told the AP. "I meant no disrespect at all." /D8TL2V601.html

I don't think this story has much more to offer.

no, he's acting like a lawyer

who asks a question during cross-examination knowing that the other side will object and the judge will sustain the objection.

He withdraws the question, but it doesn't matter, because the jury already heard it and is thinking about the point he was making.

Re: no, he's acting like a lawyer

There's an old New Yorker cartoon showing a jury where everyone has this look of utter shock/terror on their faces, the man in the witness box has a bit of a smirk on his face, and the judge is speaking. The caption is:

"The jury will ignore the witness's last remark."

Re: no, he's acting like a lawyer

I especially like Kerrey's smart ass reference to Obama's background.

...your presence in the Oval Office will send a clear and compelling message to four groups of people who will be altered for good as a consequence.

I wonder what four groups of people are soooo scary that Kerrey could not speak their names?

Bob is precious isn't he.

Smear, Scumbag, Spare us

Kerrey's a bad man. We should wait for the republicans to do the same and far worse so we can lose the general in Dukakis-syyle numbers.

Face it, if you can't handle your candidate's full name being mentioned, you got a weak candidate.

by sinclair 2007-12-20 04:30AM | 0 recs

it's the Obama Muslim headline again. Really, having Kerrey apologize just keeps it in the headlines another day and makes Obama look ashamed of his past.

All this outrage over what people say about Obama is going to kill his campaign.

Re: Now

i can't find the quote now, but obama's response to kerrey has been low key. he hasn't made a big deal of it.

Re: Now

I think what this apology does is confirm/set in stone the narrative that the Hillary campaign is playing dirty politics. Too many apologies, too many "did not mean to..", too many smart people saying too many dumb things..

I think that when you add this to the Shaheen fiasco and Bill Clinton's pathetic appearance on Charlie Rose it really is going to leave people with the impression of a desperate orchestrated attack on Obama's character. The story is that of an ossified powerful family resorting to whatever it takes to take down a challenger and preserve themselves in power.

I think Obama has handled it like a pro. To come down on him when he hasn't even responded to any of these smears is ludicrous. Obama has basically remained silent and he's just going to, hopefully, "cash in" the apologies at the polls.

Re: Now

I'm talking about the hysteria from his supporters. They're reinforcing the fact in the blogosphere that Obama's background is an extreme negative for the general election.

And the naiveity about "dirty politics" reinforces the fact that Obama won't fight and will expect the GOP to apologize for what they say. As a matter of fact, if he or his campaign or his supporters do that in the general, they are going to look like a bunch of whiny babies. Besides, I doubt that the GOP will directly do anything, they'll have the 527's do it.

Re: Now

I would rather not get into a running debate but I would like to say that the idea that because the republicans will play dirty politics does not - in my eyes- mean that the Hillary campaign should stoop to that level. Some Hillary supporters seem to feel that Obama needs practice handling this crap but I don't think thats true.

Obama will do just fine handling the republican attacks. If he is given the chance that is...

Also I don't think Obama supporters are hysterical. We just don't see a need for Hillary to bring up things like "madrassas" and "muslim"  etc. Whats the relevance of that to the primary process? I mean we are democrats, presumably, not republicans who spend their time discussing God.

If anything - if you want hysteria- look at the posts of SeymourGlass (formerly HOlden Caulfield) who yesterday said in a reply to my post that he would not rest until I died (he meant the Obama campaign died). It is the same SeymourGlass who has posted diaries in triplicate at times defending Kerrey and giving us a day by day timeline of Obama's history as a muslim etc. THAT's HYSTERIA!

Re: Now

Well, I can understand the madrassa thing but the muslim thing? Well, he did live in a Muslim country and register as a Muslim when he entered school didn't he? I mean if you think that the facts are so deadly now then why do think that they won't be in the general? I have seen no evidence that Obama can handle this stuff other than to ask for an apology.

I don't understand why you don't think things should be discussed in the primaries other than you just want Obama to coast through the primaries and get continually smacked upside the head by the GOP in the general.

Re:Wait Until General- Hurting him

I think you ought to focus on the Obama campaign. This argument that the Obama supporters are whiners is poppycock. What a few Obama supporters on MyDD post is going to have zero impact on the election. ZERO.

The Obama campaign has not demanded an apology. It has been voluntarily offered by Kerrey who I think realizes he crossed the line.

To blame his supporters for apologies offered by Kerrey or Shaheen is ludicrous.

Re:Wait Until General- Hurting him

No. I posted an informational non judgmental diary of fact: KERREY APOLOGIZED. That was IT!

It was people like yourself who weren't content with the apology and started looking for other things to argue about such as whether Obama supporters "whining" would be a problem in the general election or whether Kerrey should have apologized at all.

Re-read the diary mac: I purposefully made it non-confrontational. I didn't title it : Kerrey apologizes for racism comments, did I?

I'm done having this argument. I just can't believe that there are people still defending this racist/bigoted crap. Why not just accept Kerrey made a mistake and move on?

Oh and one more thing: some posters then started making it out like Obama demanded an apology or something. Turns out he didn't. So then it was lets turn on the Obama posters.

Really silly if you ask me.

"Obama's father  & mother's being Muslim. Obama's attendance in an Indonesian Muslim school as a child is also factual."

Please provide some evidence to back up you up. A link or anything that can be verified. Its always good practice to have a link to backup your contention before using words like 'factual'.

Re: Bob Kerrey apologizes for comments

Madrasa:Madrasah (Arabic: مدرسة, madrasa pl. madāris) is the Arabic word for any type of school, secular or religious (of any religion). It has been loaned into various other languages.

Many Obama supporters have been screaming that since the word "madrassa" is arabic, it is not used in Indonesia and so this is proof that Kerrey was on an attack mission from Hillary Clinton.  Wrong again folks.  The official website of the  organization that overseas Indonesian schools uses this word to describe both primary and secondary schools: om_content&task=view&id=62&I temid=85

The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO)

Of which Indonesia is a member.

Primary school provides 6-year primary education programmes. The Islamic Primary School (Madrasah Ibtidaiyah or Ml) is equivalent to primary school (SD), and the Islamic Junior Secondary School (Madrasah Tsanawlyah or MTs) is equivalent to junior secondary school (SLTP).

The core content of basic education curriculum consists of: Pancasila (state ideology), religion,  civic education, Indonesian language, reading and writing, mathematics (including arithmetic), introduction to sciences and technology, geography, national and world history, handicraft and art, physical and health education, drawing, English, and local content.

So it seems that Bob Kerrey's use of the phrase "secular madrasah" was fair and accurate after all.

People are picking up on this

HRC's race baiting tactics are being picked up by black folks/media. a=4012 cle=the_real_race_card

And of course Obama's camp isn't going to whine about this. Any black person in the professional world knows that you NEVER cry race---EVEN IF it's a legitimate gripe. Of course, camp Clinton knows this too and would love nothing more then to have Obama go angry black man on 'em.

But if Obama denies the racial angle, while others play it up---he looks even better, while non-blacks still get a sense that HRC is indeed playing racial fear games. Ironically, they'll punish Obama is he brings it up, but reward him if they detect it, but he still denies it. In a sick way, it makes him look admirable.

All sucessful black folks know how this game is played. HRC deserves to have it played right back to them.

Re:Wait Until General- Hurting him

We're not whining and complaining, but falsehoods need to be debunked.

"Obama is attempting to BREAK the Glass Ceiling for any Non-White Male, any Non-Christian."

Obama is a Christian, a member of the Trinity United Church in Chicago.

"Every word Bob Kerrey said were true & accurate. Obama's father  & mother's being Muslim. Obama's attendance in an Indonesian Muslim school as a child is also factual."

Obama's mother was raised as a Christian. Kerrey said Obama attended a "madrassa"; he attended a secular public school.

We're ready to fight the Republican slime. We just don't expect it from our own.

Re: Bob Kerrey apologizes for comments

The Clintonistas try to scare us from Obama by saying he hasn't been vetted, he has no idea what the Republicans will throw at him.    The Clinton campaign goes negative and its surrogates use exactly those tactics the Republicans might in the general election: fear of his foreign background and racial stereotypes.  Obama's supporters fight back and it's called whining and crying.  They push back and eventually the surrogates are forced to apologize, hurting the Clinton campaign, leaving no real damage to Obama.  And then the Clintonistas cry foul, and whine and cry.

Okay, if it is fair to "vet" him, it is fair to say he passes the test.  What we are seeing is Obama is not just going to fold and sneak back into the woodwork, and the country is truly "ready" to elect him President.  If the fear of the foreigner and racial stereotypes is all you got, it's not going to work in America in 2008.

Shall we now vet Mrs. Clinton?  She claims she's been through it all but unfortunately she hasn't.  The Huffington Post had an article the other day which was referenced here about an anti-Hillary movie being put together.  If the the trailer is an indication it could be very effective and Dick Morris and other people interviewed directly for the film are not going to apologize.  There is an article in today's HuffPost about the Bush administration and the Republicans having unprecedented information on the Clinton's actions & meetings thanks to Secret Service which channels into Homeland Security and through the hands of Michael Chertoff," a longtime Clinton nemesis dating back to his work as a Republican lawyer on the Senate's Whitewater investigation".  And then you've got this article in the New York Times about the overlapping donors in the Clinton campaign and Clinton Library: itics/20clinton.html?_r=1&ref=politi cs&oref=slogin

The type of smears which can be applied to Obama are so specific people understand them and are for the most part repulsed by the accusations and are willing to turn on the accusers.  The type of smears which can be applied to Clinton are far more amorphous.  They go to character and the way rich people get away with things most people don't understand - they just know they don't like it.   There may be absolutely nothing illegal about the info in the NYT piece, but to most people the feeling will be suspicion and mistrust.
